- Flemish giant are in the giant category of rabbits. Their name doesn't lie! They are truly massive. With this heavy body come interesting obstacles. The most common is the one that any breed can get, but the bigger bodied rabbits can be more prone to. Sour hocks. Sore hocks are a condition of the feet of the rabbit. It is most commonly due to the downward pressure placed on their feet, and then the contact of the feet to the wire flooring. It can cause sore patches on there feet, and can also cause open sores on the feet as well. It takes a rabbit a long time to heal from this. Due to the fact that they are using their feet to move about, and also rest in a more prone position, instead of sternal (on their belly) or lateral (on their side). I have chosen to combat this problem with a more ground level approach. I have built the bucks (boys) their own ground level bachelor pad. This is a prototype to see if the hutch works the way I want it to. If it does I will be building my Flemish Giant Does(girls) their own version, with kindling (having babies) in mind. So far it is a huge success, and I am getting the supplies ready to make their much bigger more dual purpose ground level hutch as we speak. that one should test my skills, as it will be built to fit in a corner. I try to be a jack of all trades rather than a master on just one.
Looks like a nice pen for them!
