3 cheers for a friendly Irishman who dares to share what works for him in spite of endlessly unappreciative commenters...and cheers to the positive advice givers and the learners that take what's useful and use it. I do wish he would tell y he likes to use lime...have Never seen that before... ..thanks a lot gardener!
Thank you for all the comments, both positive and negative. This is how I plant my potatoes EVERY year, I yield a great crop EVERY year and do not suffer problems with them such as scab etc... Everyones soil is going to be different, I make do with what I have and each year working it, it improves. As for the tools I use, while I appreciate the advise, I will continue to use the tools which are best suited to me. I am not a professional, I have never claimed to be and if you go to my blog www.thesustainablelarder.blogspot.ie you will see this. This is how I do it and thats why I shared it, because it works for me. I do appreciate MOST of the comments and now I must look to see if I can get sponsorship from Heinz ;)
I do appreciate your work . But I would also love to see you use other tools ;) especially because they are made like that for a reason and the reason is to make the job easier . the tool you used is the first tool , for preparing /flipping the ground. if the ground is still green and hard to plant on ..after preparing the ground with that tool then use a wide hoe for trenches . I understand if you like to do it that way but the reason I'm saying this is because most people with no experience think they don't have another option . someone should introduce them with all the tools they can use to make their job easier . . especially because we're already been there and made those tools there for the same reason .
I planted potatoes for the first time this year, using your tutorial. SO excited that I seem to have a great crop! Thanks for the great instructions - I will continue following along as they grow! :D
This is some great advice. I've seen other tutorials that advise to cut the seed potatoes into halves at least, but I think I'm going to go with your method this year. I've never pulled up huge crops of potatoes yet, so why not?
Thank you for the video showing how to plant potatoes the way my grandparents used to plant them. I can only find other videos that say to plant 3 inches deep and use mulch. I think I’m going to try your method!
Thank you for your video. For a first timer your video was very simple and informative. I loved that you used Basic Tools that most people have. Unlike some others that went too fancy for the common people we tend to get a little lost or overwhelmed. When experienced people go over our heads with tools or product's. I very much liked your video out of all the videos I've watched yours was the most informative and I am feeling much more confident in starting my garden. Thank you so much for your help!
Thanks for the tip, Currently in Northern Europe (Denmark) and planting spuds for the first time in this part of the world. I'm from the south in the U.S. (Carolina's) and the soil is different also the conditions. Cool shirt- It does look like the Heinz Ketchup Logo, and planting potatoes with it on "PRICELESS"...
Nice video. It doesn't get any more "back yard" than a man in training shoes with a short handled shovel digging in his spuds! Well done, and thanks for the tips.
Just a great wee video and an oddly soothing watch in these uncertain times. I’ll be putting my potatoes in this afternoon using your method. Thanks pal!🙂
Right now (late March 2018) in NE U.S., there's still snow on the ground, so it's gratifying to see someone working the soil and planting crops. I must wait a while longer. :(
My back hurts just watching you. We always used two mules and a plow to dig the trenches. I do love your video, I just feel for you, doing so much hard work.
Aren't you lucy enough to have mules and a plow :) We, like calsocooks, do not have that luxury. So each year for any crop we do, we work everything ourselves, in a large or small plot. I loved this video aswell. Thanks Calsocooks :0 :)
Well I just learned that I did everything wrong in planting my potatoes, hmmm. So you have a wonderful video and I would like your web site, you said it so fast and with your slight accent I couldn't understand the first part of it. I would like to know more about the process from beginning to the end.
This guy is bad ass. About time we get someone with some sense that’s not annoying to listen to! Also my wife wants you to make a video with your shirt off!!! Smh
also cut those potatoes with multiple eyes and you can maximise your crop as you can get up to 4 plants a potatoe . hope this adds to your experience . thanks for sharing though lad .
Excellent wee video calsocooks! Just planting mine today and i need all the help I can get even in the basics! lol Think i'll give the lime a miss though and see how it goes. Got away with it last year. A lot of people on here giving you grief. Why? Hey you've nearly got 100,000 hits so you're laughing. Thanks Tom
Out of interest how did these grow? It's generally not advised to mix manure and lime at the same time. They react together converting nitrogen into gaseous ammonia which escapes into the air. Thus losing the benefit of the manure. Also liming potatoes can cause the potatoes to get scab.
Great video interesting and nothing will eat your boots i notice you got plenty lime on them. i should be planting my first early seed potatoes in a couple of weeks when the soil is a bit dryer and warmer.
you could benefit from breaking up the soil into finer pieces as this makes it easier for the potatoes to grow and by breaking it up introducing oxygen also but im sure your crop will be good nonetheless
Disclaimer: this method of planting potatoes is okay but if you already have high alkaline soils you will suffer from scab. The lime does help but it will scab your potatoes.
Need more planting videos for idiots like myself. Also, on your website you sorted crops into a few categories (5, but only needed 4?) for crop rotation. If I made 4 areas and I did Potatoes, Onions, Beans and Cabbage/Broccoli (1,2,3,4) and then rotated them clockwise each year would this be pretty efficient? Do you use a kitchen blender for blending leaves into liquid feed?
Calscooks start raising a meat rabbit to eat and for the manure alone. Well worth the investment. This will improve your chunky soil over time. It is also a cold manure so if you think your plants need more nutrients during the season you can add rabbit manure without worry of burning the plant up.
God damn it man, I was just admiring the worm activity in my first test at growing potatoes. There was over 30 in less than a square foot. If they eat them I'll flip out
Phyll mwangi lime isn’t used to kill worms it’s used to adjust the ph levels in your soils Liming is the application (to soil) of calcium- and magnesium-rich materials in various forms, including marl, chalk, limestone, or hydrated lime. In acid soils, these materials react as a base and neutralize soil acidity. This often improves plant growth and increases the activity of soil bacteria, but oversupply may result in harm to plant life.
hi, great video, but ... i did not understand all :) can you please tell me what is the white powder? Thanks a lot, we will try our patetos for the first time :)
+Ally Fitzsimmons you can test the PH of your soil, if your soil is already alkaline then no need, but constant growing and wearing of your soil makes it acidic which isn't good for growing
Can I plant potatoes too deep? I planted potatoes 6 weeks ago, it stayed below normal in temperature and wet. Now it a little warmer and dryer and the potatoes are just now coming up in spots. What happened?
(US) I noticed you buried your potatoes about a foot [30 cm] down. I understand that the Irish bury their potatoes deeper in autumn, so to have an earlier crop in the Spring. Is this true, and is method about the same?
I was looking forward to seeing this video and learning about another way of planting but the audio was very poor and in the end just had so many questions???? How deep were they planted (looked real deep, if so why), why the lime, was that compost on top of the lime??
Enjoyed your video a lot but I know a gardener whos confused to why his soil never has any worms and as it's an allotment maybe the person before him used lime a lot, hence kills off worms but a good earth needs worms, surely, I'm old fashioned and I'm going to keep me worms. 🤗🐝🐜🐛🐌🕷🐞
In my area, the Pacific Northwest -- western Oregon, the soils can be very acidic. Lime is applied to sweeten the soil. Dolomite Lime is readily available here can be purchased very cheaply.
I know this video is old... but I just wanted to say thank you. I planted my "spuds" this way and they turned out great.

I agree. Potatoes are play a big part of Irish History, this man knows what he's doing.
He did explain why he used lime One Wayfarer. Watch it again..
He uses lime so that any slugs that try to eat the potatoes get killed by the lime
I don't know anything about gardening but this truly inspired me thank you very much for your time to show us this
Thank you for all the comments, both positive and negative.

well off you go marsy make a video then
I respect your hard work, any tips for beginners. Can I grow potatoes indoors or in a small area? Do it matter what time of year I plant?
Thanks alot. This is really something we need more people doing, self sufficiency is key.

Lovely video. Straight forward and to the point. Planting mine tomorrow and needed a reminder on how to do it. Hope your crop was bountiful that year!

Great informative video I am planting for the first time next spring.
You had me when you said " Kerr's pink's.
Great video 👍
Good tip about the lime! I'll know for next year. Thank you.
Don't forget your lime!
@@nickthegardener.1120 thanks for the reminder :)
@@Beautiful_Sacred_Land no problem! I'm going to plant my spuds this week, saw your comment was a year ago. 👍

Gonna need this for the quarantine. (Covid-19)
How did it go?
Did you get your clot shots ?

Hi looks a great job. I'm wondering what's the website you mentioned? Be interested in having a look at it. Thank you.

this was a nice video but you should have a video on the potato harvest too
Great video - thanks for sharing - I plan to plant my spuds later today......
wo0f - do you do any videos with your shirt off? :) But on a serious note: where do you get limestone? I've been dying to get some.
He does nude videos but for members only .You can get Lime at any garden supply shop .I am not sure though about using lime .Many say its wrong .
Masha'Allah very hard
Way which flavor you use plan are rich
I'm just going out to do this same thing. Do you ever leave a mulch on your soil through the summer?
Your T shirt reminds me of the "Heinz" logo
Every one used to sow their own vegetables and potatoes in Ireland in the seventies
What did they do before the 70s? Find them with some leprechaun eggs?
Awesome video helping me to understand better
Really nice video - thx
Please upload the follow up after planting especially about taking care of it
Nice video mate. Good luck next season too.
Does anyone else think his shirt looks like the Heinz ketchup logo
Lol yes
Yes I even paused to check if it was lol :)
I wasn't looking at the logo. Just his nice chest and arms. LOL

how far do the pototoes need to stand from each other from trench to trech 1feet also?
Good tip; sprinkle in grass clippings to reduce scab.
Do you have a harvest video?

Planted spuds last year and the dam wire worms will the lime stop this?
Yes ,maybe .The jury is still out on using Lime .
Good video - very helpful thanks
are you going to allow us all to see the spud harvest from this method...?
whats the lime for? is it for kiilling the worms?
Phyll mwangi lime isn’t used to kill worms it’s used to adjust the ph levels in your soils

Thanks, this was a great help!
i love watching this video...
What was that thing you mentioned to prevebt worms? And do you buy that powder or make by yourselve?
it's lime. get it from most garden stores.
What did you put in the trench before planting and why?
Lime .Lime ,did i say Lime and he said why so i will not repeat myself again and again and again .
Good i like it
what is the powder your using ?
Suggestion....use a longer handled shovel...u won't have to work bent over...easier on the back
Great video but why the lime, does it not cause scab on the spuds,Ally
Maybe if they're in direct contact with it, but I think the soil he put over the lime might prevent that.
+Ally Fitzsimmons you can test the PH of your soil, if your soil is already alkaline then no need, but constant growing and wearing of your soil makes it acidic which isn't good for growing
+Adirondack Homestead but there is such as thing as too acidic. that's why I said if it only needs lime then

I read you should not add lime to the soil when the seed potatoes are planted; it may encourage the development of scab. Farmer's Almanac
Very good.
Not really .
2 questions what is the white stuff you are putting in trench and what language
do you speak? tough time understanding you
The white stuff is lime.
The white stuff is powdered sugar and he is speaking French 80-
why did you plant your potato starts so deep in the soil?
What kind of worms? Red Wigglers or larval insect worms?
We just call them earth worms here in Ireland .
