Brodie - just a heads up DDR5 ain't like ddr4 or 3. you really only want 2x sticks otherwise you will get severe speed penalties (much worse than before) - so keep that in mind if you get 32 then decide you need 48 or 64 you will want to totally replace the sticks not add to them. Also if you go with AM5 - 6000mhz CL30 is pretty much all you need. It is considered the sweet spot (as I think clock ratios switch from 1:1 UCLK to 1:2 at about 6500mhz, it is diminishing returns from 6000 onwards.

Also the 6000mhz number is not really meaningful compared to ddr4. I'm not completely sure what changed but ddr5 effectively doubles because of the spec but then also something else almost halves. Which comes down to still an improvement but not the double number.
With an x3d cpu you're eliminating so many cache misses that the memory speed impact is very small anyway.

upgrading my PC next week from a 1700x and a 2060.

This sounds like "I want to" masquerading as "I have to".

The last time I upgraded my PC was 3 years ago. Kinda over spec'ed it, so I don't think I'll need to upgrade again for a while: Threadripper 2990WX, 3080 Ti, 128 GB RAM

Value wise, investing in one last solid AM4 and DDR4 system to last until AM6 seems to be the best for the moment.
AM5 is great, but AM4 has gotten it's current legendary status with good reason, AMD even recently having released some good CPUs for it.
I am glad for the cheap storage prices, occasionally I pick up a ridiculously good value open box return SSD to add to my server's redundant storage array.
The sole reason that I have this redundant now 2,5TB (from 5TB of storage) array being said cheap storage prices.

Whenever I update, nowadays I try to get very fast SSDs whenever it isn’t for long term storage. Hard disks are the slowest component in any computer, which bottlenecks the machine along with slow CPUs. Those load times accumulate and in the end we pay with our lives. (Dramatic, I know.) So it’s an best to strike a balance between speed and budget that meets your size requirements.

Just headsup on the cpu cooler. A lot of companies will just send you the am5 bracket if you'll ask for it. So check with your brand before you run out to buy a new one

    PC building stream when?

I don't believe the mounting layouts of am5 is much different. Depends on your cooler though. Sometimes it is a bit different but sometimes it uses the same hardware. My cooler has the same instructions listed for am5 and am4

I liked the Newegg trade in deal if you haven’t considered it

Brodie-senpai, since you basically replace your whole PC except a few parts ... honestly I'd just build a new machine and keep the old one for other projects like testing, a server, streaming and so on.

unless you want the highest CPU game performance, you're better off with a 9900x (more cores no 3d vcahce) or 9700x (same cores, higher boost, no 3d vcahce) .. my personal opinion. Both are probably cheaper and more available, and more cores is better for pretty much every workflow other than gaming so personally I'd go for the 9900x if I were you and assuming reasonable pricing which I have no clue what's reasonable in the land down under. Also, higher frequency RAM is better for AMD Ryzen so splurge there if you can, minimum ddr5 - 6000 Mhz
But yeah, you are basically only going to be able to maybe re-use your case, and your GPU, power supply depending on wattage ... I just did an upgrade a month ago from a 3770k to a 5600x ... that was a 12 year wait for me. Unfortuantely a 5600x was my price point I could afford (everything but the 1660S GPU I already had, that's CPU, mobo, ram, case, PS, ssd) - $802 Canadian
Also, since there was a 7800x3d, and they followed that with a 7700x3d and a 7600x3d, expect a 9700x3d and 9600x3d sometime in the new year I would imagine.
Also, if your SSD is older, get a new cheap NVME ..... WD_BLACK SN850X NVMe M.2 PCI-E v4.0 x4 SSD is one of the best bang for the bucks! Are there better? Yeah, but not really in the price range. Read: 7.3 Gb/s Write 6.3 GB/s ... currently $115 Canadian rubles.

i'm staving off the need to upgrade by playing older games rn. only thing i want is more cores to compile on so cpu upgrade might be next. but i'm gonna wait til next socket before i consider that probably.

Pretty much same boat. 3700x and 2070 super. Gaming is getting abit miserable these days. Its not unplayable... yet... not far off though. I do prefer multiplayer fps high refresh, so im tuning to basically low everything now. I basically need to do the whole lot at this point. Case and psu probably isnt needed, but I want to use my current system as a personal server.

Don't build a gaming PC, buy a used server :D
That would make for some good content
