About how a problem was identified, people, resources and philosophy were pulled together to create a better product than was out at the time and sent the cellphone world in an entirely new direction. What we did not get was however many minutes of ranting about how all other cellphones at the time of 2007 and prior were garbage, were trash, were awful and the iPhone was just so much better. Your videos usually are known for their details, being informative and for an Android guy like myself I can finish watching one of your videos and have an appreciation for Apple (a company I often don't think about much otherwise). Was their a texting problem the world was dealing with prior that Steve had to swoop in and save us from? I'd also refer you to your video on the design philosophy of Johnny Ives. But even though I'm an Android guy, I've got an original iPod Touch gifted to me for my birthday in a drawer. See here is the thing. I've iked this channel for a long time cause I like technology. Even though most of it is about apple, and I'm an Android user. This video felt more like an Android rant video, especially when talking about how seemless apple products are. For me, removing bloatware, fiddling with every setting possible and many other time consuming stuff on my android is the most enjoyable experience there is. In the video he says it's "a pain in the butt" bit it's actually very fun to make my phone feel like MY phone. Have a great day everyone :)
Around my early 20's, when I was a student and had a sh*tton of free time, I felt the same as you. I bought some Android, customized it, changed the default launcher or even the ROM. I just wanted to customize that phone and push to its absolute limit, that was my entertainment. I had to buy a new phone pretty often because after a relatively short period of time they stopped releasing OS updates and I wanted those new features badly without using a custom ROM. By the time I got a job as a software developer, and been through several Android devices, I felt less and less motivated to go through that customization process each time I got a new device. Those custom launchers and the stuff I installed really dragged the phone down sometimes. At that point I just wanted something that works, feels smooth, does not slow down over time (not sure slowing down is still a thing on Android, but back then it was), just something that enables me to be creative and get stuff done. So I got an iPhone to try it out. I loved the experience, the beautiful animations and the buttery smooth UI. I left my last Android on stock settings, I haven't even changed the wallpaper, so the lack of the customization I got used to wasn't a problem on iOS. I'm still an Apple user since then, got some frustration over the years, not gonna lie, but as a person who likes seamless integration of their device on OS LEVEL not by installing 3rd party stuff, I'm not gonna move back. Forgot to mention, I was a HUGE Apple hater and Android fanboy back then. It's funny how things have changed. Just wanted to share my point of view az a lazy phone person, no offense. Yeah I just commented the same thing. Not to mention rcs is still like a beta. Of course it's not gonna match up to imessage immediately. Only people that follow tech stuff will even know about it. Wait till other companies besides google start doing stuff with it.
It's basically not that, really. Restoring stuff on an iPhone is more comprehensive compared to setting up a new Android phone. On my Note 20 Ultra, signing into my Google and Samsung account doesn't restore everything. On my iPhone, all my apps (and their data) are restores and put in the same location as before. Same wallpaper. Same app positions. Same app folders I had set up before. All of it restored. That's never been the case on any Android phone I've used. In the world (outside the USA) WhatsApp is the most used messaging app. I live in Switzerland and I haven't used iMessage in years. WhatsApp has many advantages: - it works the same on iOS and Android. The UI is a bit different but the features are identical, even the emojis are the same - you can use it on the computer via WhatsAppWeb or WhatsAppDesktop which works really great and on the Apple Watch you can quick reply to messages, so it's just as seamless as iMessage - WhatsApp is completely free whereas SMS isn't - WhatsApp has the option to take phone or video calls just like FaceTime - most importantly WhatsApp has so many useful features. Pretty much all of the new features of iOS 14 iMessage were in WhatsApp for years, plus there are many exclusive ones like Live Location sharing which can be really useful (tracking kids or old people with an app that is already installed) If you don't use WhatsApp you're an outsider. You should add (in USA) to the title, none of my contacts with iPhone use it (in europe, africa or middle east...) WhatsApp and telegram are the way to go
Saying that iMessage overtook Facebook and Whatsapp is a complete lie. Just in the United States in 2020, Facebook was the leader (among Instagram in 2nd place) to be the most popular social network to message people or if we want a more updated graph, in 2021, Whatsapp destroyed a lot of platform with a 50% of usage worldwide while iMessage just had 13%, even Telegram was more popular that iMessage. The problem in this video is that it's a complete rant against Android users about why their ecosystem isn't as closed as the one we find in Apple's products. In Android, we also have something similar to iMessage and it's the text messaging app, I remember having an Xperia XZ1 and it worked just like the iMessage app with the clear difference that Android sticks with SMS.
As an android user, I like watching Apple Explained, and it let's me know why people actually like the overpriced company. But, when this channel starts bashing on Android, thats kinda annoying.
Well, in this video that actually made sense. Don't get me wrong, I'm all Android (Samsung), and I choose it on purpose - because I want to control everything. It's true however that most of the people don't. And I'm also not sure regarding this overpriced argument - if you count price/support_date then it looks like Android is this more expensive choice per year (of course if you're going to use iPhone until the end).

03:10 Android users wake up in the morning and reply to massages on their smartphone, sit at their desk and continue the conversation on their PC, take a walk outside and send messages from their smart watch and then reply to messages on the couch with their tablet. Everything automatically stays in sync.
3:34 But on iOS, it's extremely difficult and sometimes impossible for users to set up such a seamless experience (Do not take this comment seriously.)
Must be a US American thing. Waaay back when I used an iPhone (I think it was a 4S), and my mom got an iPad for work or something, but still used a regular phone, I had this experience that, sometimes, when I tried to text her, the text would be snatched up by her iPad using iMessages rather than actually sending an SMS to her phone like I intended, so I wasn't actually sure if she'd seen the SMS. Long story short, I got annoyed at "random Apple developer #37" for making a clumsy texting app, turned off the iMessages functionality, and kept on texting. Later on, with a different phone plan, and internet IM's being a cheaper option for texting (think I had an iPhone 5S at this point), I downloaded one of those (can't remember if it was Skype, or Facebook Messenger, but one of those). Now, I'm an Android guy. Rocking a Oneplus 8, and sure, while Apple makes "nice looking" stuff, I'd rather have something I can adjust to what I want, rather than something that's been carefully crafted to fit what an engineer in California thinks I want (because, if we're honest, how would an engineer in the US possibly know the specific wants of a random guy in Denmark?).
As a new convert to iPhone, (after 10 years using Android) I am most impressed with the seamless experience I am having, even between my iPhone and Windows PC. I certainly will be sticking with iOS from now on. Another excellent video, thanks!

I agree with that part but the rest of this rants was cringe. Like saying "your friend is too dumb to install an app..." But that's not the point. It's having to ask all your contacts to switch to another app and install it. What if they don't use the app you want them to use? What if folks just prefer not have to deal with yet another company handling your data? Inviting another third party into your life when it comes to an app? Put the phones near eachother and boom, even if you wanted to go cable to cable with the phones, Apple is the exact same way setting it up the first time.
Even though I’m a huge Apple fan, I wish iMessage will come to Android, Windows and other systems. Not because I want to switch, but because many more people would switch to the app and I would convince my friends to switch to it
That would be beyond stupid for apple to do. Apples objective is to keep you as locked in to the ecosystem as possible. iMessage is one of their best lock ins, if you switch no more iMessage games with friends. iMessage is popular in the US is because other countries do not have (or had) unlimited/free texting. When I was in the UK in the late 2000s, Orange charged for messaging past a low amount, like 50. Came back to the US, Cingular (now ATT) had it as a part of unlimited data (before smartphones got popular). Hence, this trained people in the US to depend on regular SMS. Our neighbors across the waters NEEDED an alternative... We did not. My android friends here still use SMS because it is ready right of the box... like iMessage.

Here’s the simple explanation for all of us non americans: America started pretty early to communicate with text messages since it was basically free with most flatrates. Since iMessage basically just feels like an extension of text messages on your phone but works on all other devices, it just sneaked it’s way in to becoming so popular. In Europe for the longest time text messages were expensive and flatrates weren’t that popular. That’s why we switched to WhatsApp early on. And that’s why basically nobody uses iMessage in Europe. Other previous videos, such as the creation of the iPhone which is one of my favorites delve into the behind the scenes back and forth. Your iMessage video left me still just wondering what makes iMessage more special than any other texting app? So bubbles come in either blue or green? Was their a texting problem the world was dealing with prior that Steve had to swoop in and save us from?
I'd also refer you to your video on the design philosophy of Johnny Ives. I've never felt one way or another about design aesthetics so long as the overall look was good and cohesive. But even though I'm an Android guy, I've got an original iPod Touch gifted to me for my birthday in a drawer. I can remember wondering why Apple didn't just go with a flat menu of icons and instead the icons look like their function - a stock ticket for stocks, a shelf for books and newspapers, a sun for the weather, a gear for settings. Your video on Johnny Ives and why things should reflect what they do and his nack for simplicity instead of covering things in a beige box with a plethora of buttons was very informative. Because of that video I understand why Apple and the market moved towards simple and graceful designs. Yet no ranting on appearances of devices that came before...

Basically, you get a ton of the same benefits apple offers, but with the ability to do a ton more and change what you don't like. Don't like something about apple? Most of time, too damn bad. Android pretty easy especially if you're already used to it.
Not to mention, more innovation on the Android side. In the world (outside the USA) WhatsApp is the most used messaging app. I live in Switzerland and I haven't used iMessage in years. WhatsApp has many advantages:
- it works the same on iOS and Android. The UI is a bit different but the features are identical, even the emojis are the same
- you can use it on the computer via WhatsAppWeb or WhatsAppDesktop which works really great and on the Apple Watch you can quick reply to messages, so it's just as seamless as iMessage
- WhatsApp is completely free whereas SMS isn't
- WhatsApp has the option to take phone or video calls just like FaceTime
- most importantly WhatsApp has so many useful features. Pretty much all of the new features of iOS 14 iMessage were in WhatsApp for years, plus there are many exclusive ones like Live Location sharing which can be really useful (tracking kids or old people with an app that is already installed)
If you don't use WhatsApp you're an outsider.
It's time for signal

how about you just use the app all your friends are using lmao?
@@MrJakson112 I’d rather use a better app that works on my phone, PC, tablet, watch and even earbuds instead of relying on some half-assed app made by a lazy company

Apple Explained: Like the iPhone, iPad
Bill Gates: *whispers* I pwn, I smack
iMessage is popular in the US is because other countries do not have (or had) unlimited/free texting.
"if u have an Apple device you almost certainly used it"
its the only DAMN thing IOS users can use LoL
You can disable iMessage
Only in United States

Whats iMessage first of all?!
2:35 cap bro we just put our new phone next to our old one 🤣
I’m Latin America it’s very weird to use iMessage, mostly because people don’t have apple products, and messages aren’t free to send in most companies, and countries…so WhatsApp it’s the most common messaging app…
And I think this video should’ve had been called “Why iMessage is so popular in the US” 😂
0:57 bro that's not iMessage, that's uMessage🤑😝🤪😜🤐🤗🤭😇🤩😛😋🥲🤣🥸🥶🥵🤯😵👿🤬👹👺👺🤡👻
In Portugal even for work groups we use WhatsApp! Don’t get me wrong I love Apple but not that many people use iMessage in other countries
Same here in Germany
Same in india.
Same in every non-american country
@Arghadip oh wow. I haven't met many people who use iMessage.
Mainly cause apple is so overpriced we all own an android.
Great, now you can get to Signal because of the new Privacy policies of WhatsApp
@@ColonelLucario big fan of telegram.

Most of my friends are on telegram
I really think Apple is so overrated I mean what’s so special with iMessage besides getting your messages on all devices
And you can literally do the same with Google Messages and have it on every device.
Stay broke
It’s almost as if you didn’t watch the video donald
@@ramasahoochandra8548 i don't think 1000$ is broke. You need to wash the android stereotypes out of your head

2:40 at this point it is simple af to switch phones in android as long as you are using google services.
Fun fact: Discord is better than every other messenger
Fun fact: That's not true. The best messaging app ever made to date is Telegram.
Discord is such a UX nightmare. Maximum file size is 8MB... And having to pay monthly for 50MB... Yeah. Compare that to WhatsApp's 100 MB size limit.
Or even Telegram's 2 GB file size limit.
@@borealfox and?
@@borealfox WhatsApp is hot shit imo

I would really appreciate if he kept doing livestreams so we could know the story of why he got the m1 Mac, more of his thoughts and interaction with other Apple Explained fans. I really miss them and they used to be a highlight of my day until we were left in the dust.
I'm, sadly, a android person, since my first phone. In the beginning I didn't like Apple at all. But after some time, I researched and looked on the web, why so many people (and some family members) use iPhones, iPads etc. Now I know and since some years I tried to get my hands on one. All the struggle with bugs, no updates (nor security updates), the whole inconsistence in the designs, the whole always customize struggle is such bullshit, that I got myself an iPhone. I want a phone that works and is perfect in the design, and not inconsistent, laggy, unfinished and more.
I agree 100%
@@xdEnvasion That's good to hear ^^ I hope that I really got a nice time with Apple, since I really spent much time with looking videos, devcons and the presentations.
I mean, if you don’t care about features or customisation, iOS is good, but I hate the lack of features, and iMessage is basically useless to me which is why I'm switching to Android.
@@Pacifiique If Android is better for you, then it's your choice ^^ Everyone has their own choices and Android must be good for many people, because it is still so popular. I, for myself, experimented with Android as it is for many many years. I rooted, broke Knox, installed custom roms, programmed, customized and many other things, but this time is over. Android was never as reliable for the things I do. I want a system, that supports each other. And Apple gives me that.
Just asking: Which Phone do you wanna get yourself?
@@somedudeonyoutubefrfr Probably the S20 FE, and if you do want reliability, iOS really is what you need, and what phone are you getting?
USA: Why iMessage is popular?
Countries outside USA: Can you repeat that again? 🤣
I like iMessage, but in my country it has a low number of users.
I heard Customization and iOS in same sentence. That's doesn't go along with each other😂😂

2:32 i never did any of this on my android phones. All i did was signing into my samsung+google account. My contacts are on the sim card, my photos are in the cloud, higher end android phones only come with facebook and spotify pre installed (i use both of them). Also noone is using themes anymore. They are like live wallpapers: a blast from the past.
yeah, although i prefer iphone, he’s kinda exaggerating about that. he’s trying to prove that iphone (and imessage) is the best and nothing can beat it.
9:13 You can between your S20 & Dell using the WA/Telegram app for Windows
What’s app only works on one device at a time
So you’d get a notification every time you switch which can get annoying
“But Apple added read receipts in 2011 and was the first”
So YOU’RE the one that’s responsible for my social messaging anxiety. Thanks Apple 🤣
I've wondered what would happen if Apple sold a paid iMessage app for Android. They'd make bank on the app, but they'd lose a bunch if iPhone sales by doing it. Apple knows they're keeping customers by making iMessage locked into their ecosystem.
@meow hahahaha
@meow Man, just use WhatsApp or Telegram, it's very easy, more practical and fun too
I love how much he bashes on Android 😂
It just shows he's bias, we don't use rcs, we use telegram or signal (WhatsApp but I don't use it)

Poor guy you can't afford iPhone
Here’s the simple explanation for all of us non americans:
America started pretty early to communicate with text messages since it was basically free with most flatrates.
Basically for most Americans it would be to much of a struggle to switch to anything but text messages at this point where as it’s an equally big struggle to Switch from WhatsApp to anything else at this point as a non American
As a non American this video felt like a fever dream
Everyone who we message uses the default google messaging app with RCS on. It works seamlessly across all our devices as well.
