That's how the traditional music business works across the board... it wasn't until the internet became prevalent and artist could start learning how the game is played... That'a why even Prince use to put the word "Slave" on his face in the 90's, because it took years for him to learn the game and he did not own his IP or even his name... Warner Brothers did. (aka Warn-a-Brotha)
The label is called death ☠️ row for a reason and it lived up to its name, be careful who you link up with, everyone on that label is either dead in jail, or strung out! Sad
I understand his point about recording artists buying their own but I do not agree with that is the way the music business goes when it comes to recording artists writing & producing an album that sell millions of records & they end up with a small payout. That part of the music industry has always been incomprehensible.
Actually, it is just a simple business. The words are complicated. Let's use Death Row as an example for majority of these record deals and distribution. Interscope distributed DR, they cut was 50%, every arstist sign with DR would get 10 to 12% of DR earnings which is just half. So if a tape after the costs of manufacturing gave a profit of 10 dollars, 5 goes to interscope, 5 to DR and the artists at a 10% rate get 50 cents. He sold 1 million copies, that's 500 thousand to him. They probably spend that just in marketing. Add everything else, like samples, recording costs and etc. the artist doesn't get much at the end because he pays for everything, which is called "recouping." It is legal, though. And its fair, you gotta make them money, they invested in you, then you renegociate down the line. Artists complain a lot cause they don't understand. First, it's all fun. Then they make millions and get greedy, thinking they should keep 90% of it. It is a business!
@@RapFatosyou left some key things out: key things like the singer Prince was fighting for when he wrote Slave on his face. I understand recoupment & I do understand that the record company put up the investment money wise & there is a chance that they won't recoup but at the same time, they own the Masters forever or until they decide to sell the Masters, which kind of put them in the position to always have Rights to music, 100% rights. I have a friend whose dad used to play with one of the biggest selling & most influential recording artists ever (I won't name them) & luckily when her dad (who played an instrument) cut his own studio album, he learned enough from this mainstream musician whereas, his family still get money from off of that album today & we are talking 20th Century music. As Prince stated, it is unconscionable that a record company or label own the Masters 100%. Yes, there are 100 points on an album, mathematically it is possible that everyone who worked on an album to make future royalties.
Kurupt is basically saying Suge took advantage of us, but it's ok, it wasn't so bad. I think he kind of liked things being simple for him and not having to worry about much but having fun and making music.
@Crazea How was Suge knight taking advantage of Kurupt & all of his other Death Row artists ,when they were getting paid a monthly of 25,000-30,000 , 2Pac was getting 75,000 a month, Snoop was getting 50,000 a month, 2Pac & Snoop was living in mini mansions, all the other Death Row artists were living in pen houses & all of them were driving in fancies cars.
He’s not lying. They want to always talk about the Black record label bosses taking advantage of these artists. But they don’t never ever want to talk about all of these White record label bosses who take advantage of artists too
Lol. Everyone always talk about those "white" record label exploiting artists. Only time they talk about black label taking advantage of rappers is death row under suge.
That’s because black labels trick black artists by saying they will treat blacks better than the white man, only to take advantage the same way if not worse.
I agree with Kurupt on what he said in the video here you can get a place to stay at for a short time in a period of your life and stack up your money and then when you have enough money to go and buy a house and then you make the move onto your new house that you are buying and just go from there on what you wanna do next it's as simple as that 100% facts about life.😎✌
Dirty? If you ain't got no album out or got on going court cases and lawsuits, then it should be common sense that the house or car you just been given isn't gonna be in Your name.
im glad Kurupt kept it real . they accepted the cars and money from Suge instead of they royalties that's on them. Reggie always said Suge didn't handle the money the right way they didn't have a royalties department at the label.
Who’s gonna tell Kurupt that Suge never “gave” them anything. It came out their budget. Which they recouped. Meaning you did buy it. Twice. Just wasn’t in your name. Slime ball

This guy really didn't think his talent was worth money. Once the Chronic dropped and sold 3 million he should have been paid for his work. No loans. He doesn't realize suge had money because of his talent. Once suge couldn't exploit them for their talent he went broke.
What he did for the chronic wouldn't generate even a 100 thousand in publishing and royalties and thats before recoupments! I worked at Burger King when I was 15 and they gave us free food for breaks. You could only get one of each and no take homes. I can't imagine that McDonal's would not let someone get free food, as much as they toss.
It's a COLD WORLD and this is ICE😮.
Whoop, whap, bam... That hits hard! Kurupt legend!
Kurupt out here looking like a extra from water boy movie
He pretty much saying that Suge did what other record companies did with artiest who did not know any better. Q-Tip said back in the 91, Industry rule #4080 Record company people are shady. And when they see you peep the Game and make adjustments in your Favor with the " Business" they replace you with a new sucka / Novice
Real man not blaming suge for his decisions
That's how the traditional music business works across the board... it wasn't until the internet became prevalent and artist could start learning how the game is played... That'a why even Prince use to put the word "Slave" on his face in the 90's, because it took years for him to learn the game and he did not own his IP or even his name... Warner Brothers did. (aka Warn-a-Brotha)
Eazy called this on Wut Would U Do outro 💯
Kurupt gave the most Realest answer to this situation!… 💯
Correct and why it's not being talked about is because folks know what it is I loved your interview
Kurupt is basically saying Suge took advantage of us, but it's ok, it wasn't so bad. I think he kind of liked things being simple for him and not having to worry about much but having fun and making music.
I get what he's saying about being 19 and carefree. But he's defending that perspective now as a grown man when its obvious he got ripped of..
Great work art of dialogue
I agree with Kurupt on what he said in the video here you can get a place to stay at for a short time in a period of your life and stack up your money and then when you have enough money to go and buy a house and then you make the move onto your new house that you are buying and just go from there on what you wanna do next it's as simple as that 100% facts about life.😎✌
Sad suge did y’all dirty
Dirty? If you ain't got no album out or got on going court cases and lawsuits, then it should be common sense that the house or car you just been given isn't gonna be in Your name.
I See Kurupt, I Click. Simple! 💯
Conda not condo. Man Kurupt I'm dying hahaha 🤣💀
realest...ish I ever heard 💯💯💯
Not that this is anything new but Suge doing that tells you all you need to know.
Suge was smart , he probably didn’t want the cars in there name or houses because they Wild out and he don’t want people to trace it back .
im glad Kurupt kept it real . they accepted the cars and money from Suge instead of they royalties that's on them. Reggie always said Suge didn't handle the money the right way they didn't have a royalties department at the label.
Man i respect you honesty.
He kept it soooooo real.
nah!!! kept it Sooooooooooo foolish!!!!

1:34 mark. you know kurupt is serious when he gotta burp lol
You’ll never really hear Kurupt bad mouth Suge. He’s always had respect for him.

Who’s gonna tell Kurupt that Suge never “gave” them anything. It came out their budget. Which they recouped. Meaning you did buy it. Twice. Just wasn’t in your name. Slime ball
Damn
He made it pretty clear he was young and didn't have anything better going at the time slime ball..would like to hear how u would have handled it at 19
@@tkrs5461 you was too thirsty to defend your favorite artist you missed the point… it’s not that he didn’t understand at 19 that’s the problem. It’s that at now. At damn near 50 he still doesn’t get it… you wasn’t the pimp you was the hoe. Suge never did ANYTHING simply to look out. Anything he gave them they recouped twice over. Y’all act like Suge knight was this big CEO before death row. He wasn’t, he was a bodyguard. Who literally attached himself to talent to get ahead
Kurupt a Real one ❤️🫡

How dumb were these dudes not realizing they didn’t have titles for them houses and cars

Cars are cool but property is a must.
That seem to be the typical schemes that people who own or run labels do. I wonder where he and others learned it from...
Berry Gordy did the same and countless others. The sad part is, blaks did it to blaks, thus keeping us in the same positions. You know these uppity blaks are in secret societies.

The record industry is really the loan industry that does music!
Damn......you're right 😮

It’s the music business
It’s always the same thing
This guy really didn't think his talent was worth money. Once the Chronic dropped and sold 3 million he should have been paid for his work. No loans. He doesn't realize suge had money because of his talent. Once suge couldn't exploit them for their talent he went broke.
What he did for the chronic wouldn't generate even a 100 thousand in publishing and royalties and thats before recoupments! Interscope cut, Death Row Cut, Samples cut, Dre cut, Snoop cut, D.O.C cut, Daz cut, Nate cut, RBX cut, etc etc. Thats a lotta people to break bread with it. Good dude I hear. My homegirl Ms Lacy from the Bay met him and produced a track.
Just because things are the way they are don't make it right. Sounds like pimps and hoes to me, jus like rbx said. Now if u good with that fine but for me I would have made sure my contract said just pay me x amount of percent of my own sales and that's it. So there's no discrepancies like this.
Bingo! As a grown man, I don't need "gifts" and "allowances" for my work. Just pay me what I'm owed. I'll do the rest from there. Some of these ppl in this comment section sound dumb asf. Majority of whom I'm sure work regular jobs. Evidently they'd be cool with receiving "gifts" as opposed to a paycheck for their 40-50 hour work weeks 😂😂😂
Hindsight is 20 20. They were kids they didn’t know the business. Death row was on top too. For all we know if they tried to leave they go nowhere u know the rep suge had back then. Everyone was being treated the same. Like he said if u didn’t like the way business was being done then beat it and good luck. I’m not saying it was right but coming from nothing to even having what suge gave them was a come up at the time. I doubt most 18 to 20 year olds walk away from that at that time.
Most labels wasn't giving them rap dudes shit. Suge gave them an "allowance" monthly. Some of them would of fucked it off anyway.

I just wish that the DR era went different. They could have been the new Motown of the rap era. All that damn talent they had. They had in house producers. Lyrical talents and new talent that would have taken the music to a new level. We can always say Suge could have done this and that but look at the end result. They had to change the game again because of DRR. We will never see this again. Can you imagine DRR with Em, 50 and the heights they could have reached with where those talents are now? Movies, sponsors, sports teams etc. Daz, Kururpt, the pound... ' Fly .. 1/2 dead. Maaan.... Dre. Beats under the DR umbrella. PAC still going. Snoop and Martha show. I don't think the mainstream would have allowed it, especially when they start talking about a Black distribution company as well. Everything would have been in house.
