    Tom, I love your channel! The info you give in your videos is so thorough and well explained that I often come back to rewatch and make sure I didn't miss anything. Your videos and blog are my first stop before Google for anything T related. That being said, my only request is that you invest in a stationary setup for filming and/or GoPro with chest/head mount. It's awesome that your cool family helps film, but I often feel like I can't see everything going on, or that when I'm looking for something specific it gets cut out of frame. Lots of the intangibles that new and intermediate keepers want to see from an experienced keeper's perspective and setup. For example, would be great to see what you're seeing when trying to gauge a Ts behavior during a rehouse, or cutaways to see your methods and surroundings during the rehouse rather than only zoomed on the enclosure. Please keep up the excellent work, and a high five to your family for being awesome enough to support your collection!!!

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  6 років тому +1

      Man, thanks so very much. And the head mount is a FANTASTIC suggestion! I actually have a GoPro that I've been tying to figure out how to use. I get exactly what your saying about not being able to see the important parts. Basically, I just do my thing and poor Billie has to try to react to what I'm doing. The head mount would fix those problems when she can't react in time (and the viewer misses things).
      I've dabbled with using more than one camera, and it's been difficult due to time. I have a huge collection, and I film these on days that I'm doing maintenance and such. I did 10 rehousings this weekend, and four of them we tried to cram in before a picnic. A lot of these are, "honey, grab the camera...I want to tape this." haha I'm about to start my summer break where I will have more time to work. I can experiment more with this then. That said, I did just buy a head mount from Amazon, so I'll try that out this weekend. Thanks again!

      One quick story to share your impact - I bought a C. Lividum sling (guy gave me an extra!) that was ~2 inches. Seller had them in 16oz deli cups with only 1.5 inch substrate, so they webbed up to the lid. He told me "watch out any time you open the lid, they bolt immediately. These containers should be fine for a while". I watched your video again, rehoused them to containers with 3+ inches substrate - never had a problem since!!

    • @Martinstanktalk

      When I got her the first time she was not in good shape. Neglected and dehydrated. So the first move was relatively easy. Now though. She's been much more active, eating well and in a much better condition. I will just have to take my time, all the precautions and see how she behaves.😀👍

Thanks Tom I always respect you and your knowledge of these awesome T's keeps me coming back. Take care Tom!

      @TomsBigSpiders  6 років тому

      You're very welcome. They really are amazing and, in my opinion, much less of a handful than they are often made out to be. They can definitely put a hurting on you if you're not careful, but most would rather hide than fight. When you do feel ready, check out P. ornata or vittata. They are two great starter pokies (and they are stunning as adults). Thank you!

    Recently relocated to LA and caught an invasive brown widow on the side of my house. I've only had her a few days and last night I flicked maybe 5 baby crickets in the critter keeper I've got her in, in hopes maybe one would go close enough for her to grab. Within an hour and she had hunted and caught all of them and was eating them simultaneously in a giant ball she had fashioned. This morning there was only the daintiest little ball of shells she'd dropped that i was able to clean with a tweezers in only a couple seconds. Spider keeper's dream.

    The ExoTerra tall terrariums are great for pokies Tom.
    They are glass so Crystal clear.
    They open from the front and the top making them ideal.
    I'll tell ya there's nothing more satisfying than having 40 same ExoTerra terrariums all lined up filled with pokies....it's very nice, and the T's are always on full view.

      I'm actually upgrading a lot of my enclosures now, and I'm looking at the taller two-door ones for some of my pokies. I used to keep my female vittata in once, but she was a bit cramped with all of the decorations. I DO use a lot of those now for Psalmopoeus and Tappi species. I love them. :)

I been looking for some nice clear enclosures to display my tarantulas in but almost every one I find has a small lid or is in a weird spot. Thank as always for taking the time to make these videos. I'm sure you have slot going on. I don't and I still find it hard to upload videos LMAO and slot of people don't know it but there's alot that goes into making videos. Lol more than I thought anyway. • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  6 років тому +1

      Thank you! Yeah, it's REALLY difficult finding the perfect clear enclosure. I prefer the ones that offer a wide opening on top, and there is just not one like that out there. Yeah, it gets really tough at time to keep up with them with all that goes on around here. I totally get it, bud! Thank YOU for taking the time to comment. I really appreciate it!

    Great video! My biggest difference from you is that I do my more problematic rehousings in the bathtub. I almost encourage the spider to "bolt" because once it is in the much larger space of the bathtub, it is a lot easier to get them in a catch cup. I don't use an open top enclosure, but that's largely because I use clear plastic or glass enclosures for most of my adults and the wider top I'm worried would make them too heavy. But yeah, I also like just leaving the catch cup in the enclosure and letting them leave on their own accord.

    • @TomsBigSpiders
      @TomsBigSpiders  6 років тому

      Hi, Jason! I did a few of them in the tub early on, but I have a hard time being on my knees, and I feel like I can't react quickly enough. Still, I know that a lot of people love that method. Personally, I think folks just need to use whatever they are comfortable with. Thanks!!!

    Shame you aren't UK have loads of enclosures that would be great for your poeci! (Not sold many because perhaps cost n size). Have a few going cheap and might do a test run by sending one via post/courier soon!
    Although that said I have two arboreals at the moment who just aren't using them. My Regalis is just never out but I think it's a long pre-moult (could hit 7 inches). Might get a rufilata soon! Communal Regalis also a possibility.

      @dajoke24 6 років тому

      I had her for almost 3 months. I might upgrade her to her adult enclosure and see if that helps. I bought a cork bark for her but it may be small, she then webbed it up when i got her. She hasn't bit at the sides in a couple days though. I saw some people say some Ts just do that from time to time.
      Do you know of any other display enclosures for terrestrial and arboreal? I liked the exo terre breeding boxes but is it deep enough for a curly hair, don't some burrow? I assume they are good for a gbb.
      What are some good display enclosures for a caribena versicolor that isn't a lot of money like the exo terra vivariums which have mesh lids. Thanks.
