I love the candid tone and gentle humour of this interview, Hugh. With the S1, S1R for professional stills photographers and the S1H nicely differentiated and featured for video professionals, Panasonic has clearly done their homework with these cameras, and it really shows. These cameras were built for full-on professional applications, not the enthusiast or prosumer markets. Very, very impressive. Another great video Hugh. No wonder Panasonic is laughing - by not crippling their cameras, they're giving camera geeks what they want. For 2 and 1/2 years, the GH5 has been the best all rounder, and now comes the full frame variant, plus upgrades. That new tilty-flippy screen now the de-facto best on earth. Given the disappointing (IMO) release announcements from Sony and Canon this week (a6600 and 90D respectively), Panasonic should suck up a lot of wedding guys, and those looking for a B-cam to the Vari-cam/EVA-1. Well, hopefully you've heard some good off-the-record news on that front.... I share Sean's thoughts on the Sigma 45/2.8 . It reminds me a lot of the m43 15mm Summilux , and it would be a must-have if I ever jumped from the G9 to an S1 series.
@@smrphotographyllc yep, the 50mm sample pics look phenomenal. Not a long way off the 50 Summilux and far more affordable. But if someone builds a three lens kit like the 45/2.8, the system then has a much smaller and more affordable footprint, which can only be a benefit for all three L-Mount partners.
Now here's the thing. You made a great point about the lack of L-mount lenses. The 35 F1.2 clearly does not need to be that size.. as it appears to have been adapted from an SLR design with a spacer to compensate for the mirror box. In fact the only native lens Sigma has at the moment is the 45 F2.8. Keep on with the great videos and I look forward to hearing what you think of the S1H in action
Speaking about how it's aimed at cinema camera users and not the UA-cam 'selfie' audience then going straight into how important the front facing flippy screen is! lol 😂
I really like Panasonic. Looks like they are in this for the long haul, not just trying to throw technology out there in a hurry to respond to competition. Maybe someday I'll be able to afford their full-frame cameras. In the meantime I hope they continue to improve their M43 bodies and lenses.
Interesting how Panasonic also released a revised Leica 25mm f1.4 version 2 which has improved AF and weather sealed - the new 10-25 and S1 releases have overshadowed its release
Panasonic is making the high performance cameras that we drool about, but the only reason I haven't bought one is the Autofocus. If they can stop the pulsing behavior where the background keeps pulsing during video, there's no question what brand has the best lineup across multiple sensor sizes.
Why Lumix decide to stick with Contrast based AF? Hard to understand.. If they have PDAF, then the competitors are finished!! Besides CAF, everything is incredibly superb, especially that tilt-flip screen !!
Good interview Hugh, though I do wish you'd pressed him on the subject of auto-focus. But then I think *every* press interview with anyone from Panasonic should always begin with "So when are you going to get serious about video AF?"
Fair point. There was nothing to indicate AF has evolved beyond the extant S1 and S1R (I have the S1R in- house now), and time was short. But Panasonic is KEENLY aware that AF performance and lens availability are critical issues. Interestingly enough, however, this is not nearly as important for the cinematographers at whom the S1H is aimed: they already have an enormous palette of cine lenses from which to choose, all manual focus.
@@3BMEP descent touch screen focus just to acquire focus is all I need. I never use continuous in video it's just to inconsistencies for serious paid work.
Thanks Hugh. I’m taking the plunge and moving from my long love affair with the 5D mk4 having upgraded though the series and going for the S1H! I have and love my Zeiss Otus 55 and 28 + 15mm distagon. But I am starting to miss AF. Would I be mad to trade in my beloved lenses for the Panasonic S Pro series? Or should I simply buy the adaptor and stick with it?
I highly suggest people to rent where possible if you're on the fence about changing your lens solution. As unbiased as I can be, there is little reason id choose anyone elses optics over those available for the L Mount now. Plus it's only growing from here. Yes the Leica lenses are expensive, but there are (and are going to be in short time) amazing alternatives from LUMIX and Sigma if budget is a concern.
@@smrphotographyllc Thanks Sean. Budget is not too much of a concern, just not sure why I'd want to part with my Zeiss lenses to replace with the panasonic. I've looked at masses of reviews and so far (without going up to medium format lenses) Zeiss seem to out perform.
I think the picture quality of the video looks more dimensional than still from my trusty 5DMkIII. I want this camera as not only a b-cam for my Varicam LT but also a replacement for my stills career.
I like what Panasonic is trying to do, but I just wish the S1H screen was on the other S cameras and that's primarily for stills shooting and hybrid work. Most pros don't know what they're missing with the fully articulating screen and the S1H screen has the best of both worlds.
I much prefer a flip out screen for stills shooting. Faster and more versatile for different heights, orientations and angles. I really wish the S1H screen was on all the S series.
Honestly my favorite feature announced was the new options for recording indicators. Any mention of a firmware update bringing the red box around the image to the GH series of cameras?
@@SonnyCrackBeats Well, turning it off doesn't mean it's hard-bolted or locked down to the frame. I guarantee you I've have such mega jello footage even with it turned off. The wind, waves and motor vibrations always find a way to knock the sensor/stabilizer out of the off position. Also when I go handheld I want it to look handheld. I use monopods and tripods nearly exclusively. I simply don't need it, but turning it off in those situations is viable, but not on a boat at speed over the waves.
@@BlackWarriorLures Good points. I think Panasonic was in a lose/lose with IBIS. They certainly remember how many people complained about the GH5s not having IBIS but now there will be people complaining that it does have IBIS. I'm surprised there isn't a good way to lock down that sensor when not in use.. seems like some sort of clip system would work but I'm not an engineer... Maybe for the S2H lol
I love these cameras. I will probably buy this one someday. I really do wish that Panasonic would do a lot better than contrast AF :( 18:24 "So this is the native L-mount that does the continuous autofocus..." It's a huge investment to switch to a lens mount which almost no one out here uses, but they need to really do better than contrast AF to make the switch worth it. *IF* I do invest in one of these L-mount cameras, I will most likely just buy an EF adaptor and use manual focus with my Canon L-series glass. If the AF was decent, there would be a bigger difference between manual focus and buying native L-mount glass. This is ESPECIALLY true for cinema/motion-picture/video over stills, as the hunting shows up in the captured material - not so for the stills.
That was an interesting chin wag Hugh. Second time l've seen Sean interviewed and he certainly knows his stuff and is passionate about the products Panasonic brings to market. A real pity some other manufacturers don't listen to their customers as closely and deliver what they want. Instead they drip feed changes over time or cripple their offerings.
Despite all the technical wonders, I still can't get past Panasonic's marriage to its shoddy AF system. I shoot nature, 99% in the field. Fast AF and AF performance in low light are crucial. There are things I love about Panasonic, but couldn't even consider one of their cameras til they fix the AF issues.
Hope Sean reads some of these comments, if not please pass on :) S1, why is there no shutter angle and syncro scan and a few other little features that the GH5 had available with the VLOG update?
If you're referencing the S1 (which I assume you are). It's simple. From day 1, the S1 was NEVER advertised as a GH5 replacement. It is a balanced tool for hybrid content creation. High IQ in video balanced for Stills capture as well. The S1H is the camera you would look to for the true CINEMA feature set. It's part of the reason the S1H has the redesigned chassis that it does. I understand some of the frustration with what has come from the filmmaker update, but at the same time, we've never been a company (that I can recall) to list a set of features coming that hasn't delivered what we promised.
@@smrphotographyllc Thanks for replying. I have ordered the S1H, and that looks like a great run and gun. It's a shame that the S1 won't get shutter angle update, it would be a great extra body for the S1H. I will probably stick with the GH5 and GH5S for backup for the S1H. But I am sure I will keep using the GH series for a bit for smaller lighter run and gun situations. And will probably get the GH6 when that get's announced as well. Or will it be the GH5 MK II...
4,000 bucks and is 4:2:0 not 4:2:2...... i really would like a comparison between their top quality and the BMCP at 4k...... i just don´t know which one to pick yet.... also a workflow comparison between their codec and 4k raw from black magic.....
mougabo it can do 422 internal in the 4K modes, just 6K is 10bit 420. It’ll be doing raw to atomos too, so theoretically should be providing similar to black magic but in Full Frame.
I love your videos. Please consider using an audio compressor in interviews, you have a habbit of REALLY dipping the voume when you talk for some words. It's hard to hear what you are saying - especially when the interviewee speaks so much more loudly than you do. Otherwise keep up the good work. :) thankyou.
After I got home to watch this, I realized that you have panned the mics respectively in the stereo field. I think mono is best. Some listening environments may favor one side of the stereo output.
Terence Kearns See show notes! 😊 Yours are valid points, which I usually address in post - but did not this time in an effort to get it out quickly from the road.
Interesting how he says they don't do half measures and won't put out equipment that isn't ready, yet most agree that the autofocus system is not ready for professional use. Even so, I'd love to have one of these in my bag.
Yes l was waiting for that exact point to come up in the conversation unfortunately it didn't. Will be very interesting to see the autofocus performance on the upcoming G10 and GH6 and whether Panasonic sticks to DFD.
@@walrusgumboot The comments I referred to were blanket statements and not directed specifically to this camera, and therefore apply to all cameras in Panasonic's lineup, including those aimed at non-cinema shooters. Many folks agree that Panasonic's AF system is well behind Sony's and Canons, and even behind Nikon and anyone else using phase detection.
Alan Tutt I agree that it’s behind other AF systems and understand your point. None of them are sports cameras though. I’ve also heard them state that they don’t want the image quality compromise of doing on sensor PDAF
Jesus, so tired of the autofocus complaints. I don't know one single working broadcast, film or television DP /cam op that relies on any kind of auto focus, Sony or otherwise. This camera is aimed at cinema professionals who prefer not to introduce any unnecessary possibilities for image compromise, thus Panasonic has stated specifically avoiding phase detect on the sensor because it causes banding in certain situations. Not to mention, even Sony cameras lose focus sometimes.
It's a beast of a camera, but now a days I've gotten use to workable autofocus. Can't/Won't go back. Sorry Pana, maybe next generation you'll add phase detection.
Yes... and no (just my opinion). Phase detect is not going to solve magically the AF. If you see the current status, the S line (and G9) are in line with Z and R AF. The guys at Sony just have some magic algorithms that give them the edge. The point is- for truly accurate AF at these large apertures, the final adjustment is always contrast based (except R mount I gather) so Pana would need not JUST to add PD but also master the hybrid AF by itself.
Dual IS 2 (6.5 stops stabilization) requires LUMIX OIS compatible lenses. Any other lens will be supported for 6 stops of stabilization via the In Body Stabilization system.
Thank you for another great video Hugh. It's always good to see Sean being interviewed, and you both seem to work well together (as you did before). I hope the new revision to the high speed Panasonic/Leica 25mm M43 lens includes for a reversible mount lenshood, and not the great looking classic Leica lenshood that has to be stowed separate to the current lens. All the best.
If any one of the camera manufacturers wanted to build the perfect camera they only need to watch youtube reviews for about ten minutes and they would all know what to do, no iterations necessary
@@3BMEP Great. Coming from using mirrorless bodies that have terrific autofocus I can't imagine using a camera where I'll have to only use manual focus. @@smrphotographyllc I'm sure if olympus can do it........! to amalgamate the 12-60 and 50-200 into one groundbreaking lens - for travel especially - what a treat !
so it's not that they cannot fix autofocus, Panasonic made a design decision not to adopt PDAF because you sacrifice image quality in certain shooting scenarios
Never once did you address the “elephant” in the room. What the hell are they gonna do about that god awful autofocus? How could you have not asked him about that? I’m starting to think it’s some sort of discussion that takes place before the interview that states you cannot ask that question. Of all the people who ever interviews the Panasonic reps it seems as tho nobody never asks them about that damn dinosaur contrast autofocus system, where is the camera conspiracies guy when you need him. I bet they will never invite him to a press event.
Major Motion Pictures You raise a valid point I’ve in fact made many times before: the contrast only/DFD AF - particularly in video - is not in the same league as Sony (or Canon, for that matter, and now nor Fujifilm too). Its stills performance is generally competitive, though again not as good. The AF is unchanged from the S1 or S1R (which I am testing now, stay tuned). As I’ve pointed out in the comments section of this video, however, AF performance and lens selection for the S1H are not nearly the issues they are for its siblings. This is because cine DPs have all the glass they need via adapter, and that glass will most likely be manually focused. As for the idea that I’d accept a constraint imposed by a manufacturer to not discuss something as fundamental as AF? That’s just silly.
not that enthusiastic about 6k. let's be honest processing 6k video is a nightmare and nobody really news 18 mp frames. the other specs (except the AF) are absolutely amazing though.

Such a shame, the S1H is almost a perfect mirrorless video camera if not for their weakness in AF
@@Hangs4Fun True, but not so long ago the world was telling us that video AF wasn't required - manual being the pros choice. So give them time.
I share Sean's thoughts on the Sigma 45/2.8 . It reminds me a lot of the m43 15mm Summilux , and it would be a must-have if I ever jumped from the G9 to an S1 series.
It is 100% my favorite lense made for the system that we don't make (though there is something just so special about the 50mm!!)
Speaking about how it's aimed at cinema camera users and not the UA-cam 'selfie' audience then going straight into how important the front facing flippy screen is! lol 😂
Another great interview, Hugh! I'll hang on to my GH5 and A7iii but wow that S1H seems amazing! Thanks!
really need that audio balance to stereo + proper mix to L/R channels! especially hard for people hard of hearing in one ear.
I really like Panasonic. Looks like they are in this for the long haul, not just trying to throw technology out there in a hurry to respond to competition. Maybe someday I'll be able to afford their full-frame cameras. In the meantime I hope they continue to improve their M43 bodies and lenses.
You and me both!
"We don't use customers as beta testers." I love Panasonic. Could you speak to Apple? I'll wait.
Atomos told me on Instagram that this can do Full Frame 4K60P out to an external recorder. I need confirmation...
wha?! I hope so
Great stuff! Camera looks very versatile 👏👏👏
Loved the LOWER THIRD in the beginning
gibbyvisuals you mean the one I forgot to remove in my haste to get it out? 😜
That’s the one haha! We’ve all done something similar
Why Lumix decide to stick with Contrast based AF? Hard to understand.. If they have PDAF, then the competitors are finished!!
Besides CAF, everything is incredibly superb, especially that tilt-flip
screen !!
Kent Ekasak PDAF has its own issues too. No solution is perfect, and cinematographers have been happy doing MF forever, PDAF wouldn’t change that.
The S1 Line will shake the FF mirrorless market as we know it in the coming years
I think the picture quality of the video looks more dimensional than still from my trusty 5DMkIII.
Omg what a diehard ...look at the Lumix guy's tattoo on his left underarm 😱😎...
A optics design 🤩!!!

Honestly my favorite feature announced was the new options for recording indicators. Any mention of a firmware update bringing the red box around the image to the GH series of cameras?
Is it better to buy a S1 in 2023 to save on media cost? Isn't the S1 and S1H same cameras after all those updates?
I understand why they added IBIS, especially with such a big chip, but I prefer non-ibis really.
Black Warrior Lures I guess the question is: does it work well mounted on vehicles?
@@3BMEP Exactly, that's my question.
Can always turn it off which I'm sure most pro level cinematographers will do but very nice for handheld shots with vintage glass.
I really do wish that Panasonic would do a lot better than contrast AF :(
18:24 "So this is the native L-mount that does the continuous autofocus..."
It's a huge investment to switch to a lens mount which almost no one out here uses, but they need to really do better than contrast AF to make the switch worth it.
Terence Kearns Agreed.
Very good interview. Lots of info. thanks.
Chuck Braverman Hey, Chuck!
Gosh this camera looks fun to use. Really want to rent!
I just want to check out the Panasonic S1 as soon as possible..
Great video as always
why lumix s1 doesn't have FHD 120fps with sound & autofocus why you guys holding that back Answer to time 6:08
Hope Sean reads some of these comments, if not please pass on :) S1, why is there no shutter angle and syncro scan and a few other little features that the GH5 had available with the VLOG update?
Awesome in every way
🙏🏻😊
what is that big eye cup on the camera on the right?
That's the extended eyecup for the S series. It's available at any of the authorized dealers for the S series.
4,000 bucks and is 4:2:0 not 4:2:2...... i really would like a comparison between their top quality and the BMCP at 4k...... i just don´t know which one to pick yet.... also a workflow comparison between their codec and 4k raw from black magic.....
mougabo It’s only a matter of time before we - or someone else - does exactly that!
mougabo it can do 422 internal in the 4K modes, just 6K is 10bit 420.
It’ll be doing raw to atomos too, so theoretically should be providing similar to black magic but in Full Frame.
MrWalrusGumboot dammmn that sure sounds good to me
I love your videos. Please consider using an audio compressor in interviews, you have a habbit of REALLY dipping the voume when you talk for some words. It's hard to hear what you are saying - especially when the interviewee speaks so much more loudly than you do.
Otherwise keep up the good work. :)
thankyou.
Alan Tutt as a “cinema camera” the Auto Focus isn’t a compromise and is better than most options out there.
Wait, it's 4:2:0, 10-bit?
Yes, for 6K, and 4K (upto 60p) Super35 crop. 4K full-sensor is 4:2:2 up to 30p.
@@jammin023 Ahh, nice!
jammin023 it can also shoot C4k 60p in 10bit 422. H264.
HEVC doesn’t support 422, only 420.
Slightly ahead of their time..except autofocus
It's a beast of a camera, but now a days I've gotten use to workable autofocus. Can't/Won't go back. Sorry Pana, maybe next generation you'll add phase detection.
I understand.
Yes... and no (just my opinion).
6:04 - This statement right here quite possibly made the folks at Canon throw up in their mouths
"The auto focus works, everything works." What?!
For a one man show, hunting is a no no.
It really should have had 2 XQD cards and 12 bit out when available over hdmi
I understand. :)
How has the auto-focus been improved?
Guy Jordan Inhave the S1R in hand now. Stay tuned.
@@3BMEP ... standing by ;)
Fan and dust - not something I'm thinking 'I want one of those on the back of my camera'.
will that work dual IS work on non native lenses?
Story Café Africa I think not.
Unfortunately the hood and exterior design are the same as the previous (though the new version has been weatherized)
So glad you enjoyed it!
@@smrphotographyllc Thank you Sean. Very much appreciate the reply.
If any one of the camera manufacturers wanted to build the perfect camera they only need to watch youtube reviews for about ten minutes and they would all know what to do, no iterations necessary
It is great camera but wish it had phase autofocus and the put out more m43 cameras and include the better focus than contrast de focus pokus
Is the autofocus usable enough to do focus tracking? Is it better than the autofocus on the GH5?
Keith Hutson TBD!
@@3BMEP Great. Coming from using mirrorless bodies that have terrific autofocus I can't imagine using a camera where I'll have to only use manual focus. Granted, I am a one-man-band shooter documenting things on the fly. Is the idea behind purchasing a cinema camera that one should be equipped with a video production team including a focus puller?
Is there still a big lag using the HDMI?
Lee Daley I’ve heard ~ 7 frames, but this IS an HDMI thing and not a Panasonic thing.

Ask them when will they finally fix auto focus? I mean they are falling behind let's just be honest. Yes I use manual but still lol.
so it's not that they cannot fix autofocus, Panasonic made a design decision not to adopt PDAF because you sacrifice image quality in certain shooting scenarios
Umm me gusta esa cámara !!!!
Don't sleep on Panasonic in this FF m/less race.
Ditch that contrast AF and get serious about AF and EYE AF
But you don't have to use the 6k is you don't want.
