Once I thought this was what America would be like, then I stopped being a fool and realised America had no interest in its jazz geniuses, no understanding of the immense wealth of its jazz talents. Anita O'Day couldn't get on Vegas and John Coltrane struggled to pay the rent on his Harlem apartment.

Around this time Anita O'Day was staying in Colorado Springs..week end appear at The Band Box, a Denver popular jazz joint..during the week with Johnny Smith in the Springs..years later at a Malibu,California club..Anita O'Day..sitting at the bar which all most part of the band area..on her break I mentioned catching her week-ends at the Band Box..the conversation we had outside on a chilly winter night..she recalled it..much to my surprise..her recollection, ' a few times, right.' I agreed, also reminded her, with Johnny Smith at the Broadway Club..asked me if I was visiting California..I replied I now lived in the state..Her parting words.."Why would you leave Colorado"?.."To see you" said I...we both laughed..Pleasure of seeing and hearing her a few more times...

I saw her live at The Blue Note,in NYC, on Tuesday, January 12, 1982. She had seen her better days by then, could not hold notes like she used to, but it was a pleasure seeing a jazz goddess art work.

+Keith Nicholson ; Saw her at the Blue Note in the Fall of 87' (Buddy died in April) with "The Buddy Rich Ghost Band". She was fantastic she did most of her tunes from her time with Gene Krupa and her other big band arrangements. The band was exceptionally strong as they knew they had a lot to live up to. Looking back at it you'd think it would be some ad-hoc jazz session, but it was really, really really, well put together. She wasn't weak and had no intonation problems that I could detect.

I hate to say this (I really do), but following her cold turkey 1969 dry out period on Waikiki Beach, Hawaii, she she changed.
Never the same again, although Anita came close upon certain occasions.

She is one of the legends. So many singers butcher this song but Anita takes it beyond what seems possible. I have to say too, these Japanese guys sound really good. I love the trumpet solo.

This woman is beyond fantastic. She infused jazz and her singing with such a crisp and unerring beauty. She was an acutely knowledgeable musician, her work with tempo and beat has never been matched, and never will be. May all the gods bless you and keep you Ms. O'Day.

You must be the luckiest one, among others that had the same fortune to meet Anita O´Day. I recently saw her appearance in Newport 1958 on UA-cam. Killing, absolutely killing! Would I have been old enough I surely had wanted to be her friend, maybe played with her, but 1958 I was only one year old. I had fought for it. Her anarchistic style, in combination with absolute sober high fashion, her rhythm, voice, humor on stage, what can I do but melt. Anita takes the prize, although many good

Good Gawd, I'm sorry I never saw her in concert (at her peak like this); of course, I was too young. I can hardly think of a singer in jazz today that has (had) as much going for her (chops, style, grace et al) that O'Day did. What a treasure!

What a fantastic artist Anita was. Met her at Lake Tahoe about 1965 while listening to Kirk Stewart Trio (Kirk on piano, George Hughes on drums and Allen Jackson on bass). Anita was working the South Shore and this club was on the North Shore. I later worked that club for three years, nightly. Went to Vegas and saw Anita at the Trop and hung out with her. She was so hip, sang great and was very funny. Saw and heard her many times after that through the years in Palm Springs,L.A.RIP, Anita.

Fantastic, thank you for your fast reply. Me and my mother happened to look at television together (it happens seldom) three years ago. They showed her performance from Sweden (SVT = Swedish Television), the show must have been 1 hour. Me knowing nothing about Anita, my mother knowing everything, this was her youth idol. A Diva she explained. From zero I got magnetized by Anita, I kindly demanded absolute silence in the house. One of my most remember able sittings with my mother. We cat & dog.

Thanks for posting Anita in her prime... Others today attempt to imitate what Anita did back then... I was fortunate to have seen her in the mid-late 70's in Chicago at Rick's Cafe. I was hosting a jazz radio show at that time and Anita graciously allowed me a 1-1 interview. She was incredibly hip!!! She even autographed her book to me! Thanks again for posting.
