  • This week I interview UA-camr and content creator, Joel Wood.
We discussed Joel's own transformation, his relationship with his body, the pressure he feels being on social media and in the gay community, and some of the things he's overcome to get to where he is right now.
Joel's warmth and openness in how he's dealt with his body image issues, coming out, and overcoming an eating disorder show us just how important these conversations are.

I always knew my son was gay since he was very little. So, when he was in 11th grade in high school I asked him and he told me yes that was in 2007. I told him is I just want him to be happy. He's been with his partner since 2008, the second week of college.

Joel: I am from that "other generation" that told you being gay would ruin your life/career. I only ever saw you with Lia, but I pretty much guessed you are gay. So. That is your business. Not all of us old boomers are stodgy and judgmental. Since then I have followed your vlog fairly regularly and only happened on this one of Keegan's becasue it came up in my suggestion column after watching one of yours. I love you two guys together and am happy for you both.

Joel, this podcast interview made me like and appreciate you even more. ❤️ I love that you don’t try to fit in to a certain group or “type”, you’re just you. I think more people need to see and hear that, it would help build the confidence of so many. And your comment that “only you control the sharing of your sexuality” was so powerful, because that is so true, especially for someone like you, who is in the public eye. Thanks for being you, and encouraging us all to be true to ourselves. ❤️❤️❤️

I remember seeing Joel's coming out video and him mentioning how he didn't want to be part of the gay community despite being gay. I feel like this interview captures that feeling without the rawness of the moment for Joel. A good open conversation. Stan Joel Wood, my favorite old lady gay youtuber.

Brilliant interview. I think Joel speaks for a lot of gays when he says he doesn’t fit in as I think that’s how most of us feel. It used to be you got out to a gay bar and everyone was in there and we didn’t have these mini groups, sure they were there but it was more mixed. I’ve been a follower of Keegan for a while so started following Joel, glad you’ve found someone who comes across as genuinely nice. Also Keegan you are clearly a caring person and that shows in this interview. I’ve been with my husband now for 22 years, keep going boys as it flys by!Looking amazing both.

DEFINITELY dating and Keegan certainly joined Joel's group of gay "old women" without protest. 🤣They are both great vloggers individually. Vlogging together they are also brilliant. There hasn't been a better, more telegenic, more hilarious pair to watch than Patsy and "Eddie" aka Edwina - "Absolutely Fabulous" on Brit TV starting way back in 1992 (Joel's birth year❓)

My name is Chris and I am with my partner almost 20 years/ We were both in the closet and given up on ever living an authentic life then we met and everything changed. But we don't fit the stereo type at all and feel strange. You two are the closest I ever came to having the same feelings ideas and interests. Its just off the scale how similar we are in outlook and aspirations and how we deal with family and friends and generally being Gay as a being that is unique to you. In one sense we are a boring couple but on another we love life and concerts and events and going out. I lost track of my gym life because I went to college when my life work changed. I got a bad back and had to adapt but I left part of my soul in the gym. I used to feel alive after the gym and I was fitter and looked better and felt better. You are inspiring us. You give us hope. We were giving up. By the way I love baking bread and little things too. You are so genuine and authentic and I know because we have been desperately looking for this in the gay world in our area. People like you who are trying to be themselves and navigate life and trying to keep an openness to change and difference while at the same time accepting who you are and being at peace with it and not agonising over being who you are in dealing with this life and how we fit into it. Thanks so much. I found this today on our Gay Pride week. I didnt feel good about it because as I commented under your video Keegan I felt it didn't represent us and its was so disheartening. But both of you have given me such hope and I know we are not alone in feeling unsure of what it means to be a gay man in 2023. Thank you both for this great honest video.

Love this video! It´s so nice to hear these different experiences. I´ve always been "out" even when working in a very "heterosexual" medium like the pinball world...I feel somehow more related to Keegan in this aspect. But I´ve been always open about my life. And I know some guys said "oh...are going to work with Marcelo? Do you know he´s gay, don´t you". And for me that wasn´t too much of a hasle...as stupid people run away by themselves. Anyway is kind of sad...as nobody says "Oh, you´re going to work with this guy! Do you know he´s straight?"

It is great to hear your story Joel about wearing the baggy t-shirt at Halloween, When I was at my largest (18 stone)I used to get called Shrek - mainly because I was unhappy grumpy and am Scottish - So people thought I was Shrek. I used it to my benefit in that I went out and lost the weight and got myself down to 13 stone and called it my Shrek Shrinks diet. Some friends were appalled that someone had called me that and others that I was using it to lose weight. It's not that I wasn't trying before it just gave me that little bit of extra kick and motivation to do it. It didn't help though as I was still unhappy because I was seeking some sort of perfection that doesn't exist. I didn't think that I had lost enough. I wanted to lose more. I didn't need to as I was starting to look emancipated. What did surprise me was going out on the 'scene' and then people who wouldn't give me the time of day before wanted to speak to me or to come shake my hand to talk to me. I was still the same person than before but I suppose I was more desirable and could be seen in photos etc as they are so focused on image.
I have yo-yo weight and just like being gay, I have come to terms with it alongside that perfection doesn't exist.
Thanks both for bringing this all these subjects to life and doing it and showing that we all face the same issues no matter how we identify.

Keegan and Joel never heard of you guys before until you appears (Joel) on my insta feed. What incredibly men you are. I have a faith and always been told being gay is wrong. Whilst I’m not gay myself, I’ve learnt over many years not to judge and leave other folks to live the life they want. I’ve no idea whether some folk are born like ‘they will be gay’ (sorry wasn’t sure how to phrase that sorry). As a gay Christian Joel that’s not for anyone else to have an opinion on. I want to say to you both thanks for sharing. I’ve always pondered why anyone who is gay has to ‘come out’. I guess not living your life I understand. However you got yourselves a new follower. I just wanna say be proud of who you are, your achievements and for educating me. Be blessed ❤🎉

I have been watching Joel and Lia for awhile now and I’m surprised that Joel had to “come out”, so to speak, because I automatically assume he was a gay man. I really enjoy watching their videos and his sexuality never really plays a part in their channel as far as I’m concerned. Joel, it really isn’t anyone’s business what your sexuality is. If you lost friends or subscribers because you “came out”, well you are better off without them. You are God’s child and He loves us all.

Listening to this, Joel says some of his friends were upset that he didn’t tell them he was gay. They found out from his coming out video on UA-cam. That no one is entitled to that information. But, if they’re your friends, aren’t they entitled to your honesty? To your truth? If I was friends with someone, and I didn’t tell them I am gay, is that friend really your friend? To me, friends and family are the ones who are actually entitled to your truth. Without it, they don’t really know you. The real you, and to me, that’s not real friendship. When I was in high school or in my 20’s, and I made a UA-cam video about me coming out, and I hadn’t told them first, they would have been really upset too. I would be upset myself, if someone made a huge announcement about themselves online, without talking to me first. Like, you think I’m just a nobody? I’m just one of your UA-cam subscribers? I don’t know, this isn’t me trolling, or trying to start something. It’s just my opinion. Maybe if Joel reads this, he can see why some of his friends got upset. Another point of view 🙂

I don't think there's a right or wrong way to come out. We all have (or had) to do whatever felt/feels right to us in the circumstances. I think it's noble to aim to gay it forward by being so honest and vulnerable. What a shame you chose to spoil that by being so unobjectively nasty for no good reason at all.
