The Snow Arch Greenhouse Build Part 4 Framing the Steel End Walls

  • In this video I will show you how to construct the end wall kit for the 30' X 96' Snow Arch. FYI, Just because it says kit doesn't mean that everything is cut to length. Every house will be different given the terrain that it sits on so every piece of 2"x 2" piece of tubing must be cut to length. Thanks again for following along!

    Oh boy, I'm starting to get itchy, and can almost see greenery going into it! This is so great. To watch you step by step, and I want you to know, that it is really, really appreciated too. Your hard work, and I mean HARD work, is starting to finally pay off. I can see it so much better now that the ends are in. Those fans are monsters! Wow that's big! It's so strong too. I'm amazed at this building. I hope that you will soon get to enjoy all the work you have done, it will be so nice to see the first "Green" go in. Ok, any color thing go in, as long as it's a living plant. LOL I'm amazed every time I see this, and how much of a blessing this is going to be for you and your family. Joy, joy, joy! Bless, Sheila

      I bet! That video was a bit on the long side but sure demonstrated all what is involved and your hard wok. Wow. Have you given the thought of putting up more durable sides, maybe 3 or 4 feet up from the ground along the length of it? I'm thinking wood and maybe brick facing? Just curious. I am following your project Chuck, 'cause you are doing stuff i would like t but can't!

      +Rivet Gardener I have not thought of siding it but may do that on the next one I build. I have to be careful with this one since I already have better than 17,000 dollars into it and my wife would probably beat me with any siding that I bought for it. I will be using the old greenhouse materials to build another one sometime next year and may do something like you speak of there.

    You're right about the Tek screws, Chuck. Although they are great fasteners, a hammer drill or impact driver is almost an essential tool to install them.
    I kind of wish I had gotten the metal end-wall frames. I wanted to do wooden ones simply because I am far more familiar working with wood and did not need the extra strength. Whereas your metal square tubing is always straight, I quickly learned to only buy (from the big orange or big blue home supply) the wood that I could use in the next day or two. If I tried to store it (even indoors) for more than a couple of days it became warped, twisted, bowed or otherwise unusable! I've installed my personnel door three times because the wooden frame warped and the door either would not latch or could not be opened.
    I hope you have been keeping up with the manhours of you and helpers. I think you are going to have far less hours in your bigger and stronger hoop house than Cheryl and I did (and we're STILL not finished!) I must complement you on the efficiency of how you work.

    • @FensterfarmGreenhouse
      @FensterfarmGreenhouse  9 років тому

      +ItsyFarm I believe that if you factor the age/hour worked factor into the equation we are pretty close. I am 54, my bride i under 50 (we'll leave that one there) and both of my boys ate under 23.
      I am very happy that I went with the steel end walls. I only wanted to do this one time. I notices that when I took my old one down that some of the treated wood was termite infested. They went into the wood through the cut end of the lumber. It appears that if the lumber isn't treated completely through those little boogers still eat it. I was going to have to rebuild those end walls in a few years anyway.

    • @FensterfarmGreenhouse
      @FensterfarmGreenhouse  9 років тому

      +Alan Williams Thank you Alan. The TEK screws are not easy to push through the metal. I have a torn labrum in my shoulder and screwing those TEK screws in is killing that shoulder. lol In addition the metal shavings that come from the screw cutting into the metal is red hot and sharp. What doesn't cut you will burn you.

    I like the yellow levelling gizmo did that come with the kit. When I see how solid that clay soil is it's amazing that you are able to plough and grow crops in it. It's a lot of work but you must have a great feeling of accomplishment at the end of each day. Funny I was just going to say how much work the self tapping screws save. LOL Getting closer to have it closed in everyday. I notice a hoop leaning against the fence did they supply an extra or does that get used later on?

    • @FensterfarmGreenhouse
      @FensterfarmGreenhouse  9 років тому

      +Dale Calder I bought the post level at Lowes Dale. I love that thing. Much easier than that big long level that I had. I have a torn labrum in my shoulder and screwing those TEK screws in is killing that shoulder. lol
      The hoops against the fence rail belonged to the old greenhouse. I had never used them so therefore I never moved them when I took the old greenhouse down.

    Looking great ~ I'm thinking you mentioned having 2 guys helping?? Will you place a couple of posts halfway just in case? You know, "hope for the best and prepare for the worst'. That was how folks lived in New England when I grew up. It drives my wife crazy but hey...

    • @FensterfarmGreenhouse
      @FensterfarmGreenhouse  9 років тому

      +David Dube (Oregon Gardening) I am not planning on putting any posts in the middle for the purpose of support but I will be putting structure somewhere near the middle for my hydroponic /aquaponic systems. Those structures will certainly lend support to the greenhouse structure should it need it.
