We hope they're safe. But remember they were slowly crossing the road for a couple of days. Still in the area but exploring further grounds. Animals can be just as curious as we can be sometimes. And on the positive note no evidence of any "fowl play" so that's good news.

    one way of cooking corn is not to remove the husks; just place them on a grill...cook them rolling them over every 15 min for about 30 min; the husk and silk pulls right off; it steams inside the husk;

That’s what I was going to suggest. Once I tried that, I haven’t gone back to steaming or boiling in years... It’s tough to match that fire roasted flavor using water not fire. And those little kernels of gold that the flames touch and they turn brown, mmmmmm that’s yummy!

My in-law’s process lots of corn every year. The whole family gets together and everyone has a job... the way they remove the silt is to take the end of a baby bottle brush and put it in an electric drill... they wedge the drill in a saw horse and hook the trigger to make it run automatically, then you take the corn that’s been shucked, but not silked, and you just run the corn around the baby bottle brush head and it removes all of it.... much easier than removing it by hand... although they have a lot to process at one time... :)

At the beginning of the season the kernels will be smaller, as the corn ages they get bigger, but they’re also not as tender. I love the young corn for fresh eating and the older corn I like to can. It’s so nice to open up a jar of summer goodness in the dead of winter!

If you leave a few husks on the corn after removing the silk. soak the ears in water. You can toss the ears on the grill with the chicken to roast, you need to turn the ears to cook evenly. I've also wrapped ears of corn in a wet paper towel to cook in a microwave oven.

An idea for cooking corn on the cob that I saw. Microwave it husk and all. (about 3 minutes for two or three)
Then chop off the bottom up to the first row of corn. Then grab (using an oven mitt) the top and squeeze the cob out of the husk and silk. The cob comes out done and without any silk.

Homemade butter is the best. I have my grannies butter mold, it has a pineapple carved in it which leaves a very pretty imprint on the top of the butter when you turn it out. My g-parents has a farm and I spent my summers with them. It was the best experience. I helped them with the garden, milking cows and feeding the other animals. I helped my grannie make jams & jellies and can veggies. Everything we ate was from their farm except flour and meal. It was awesome!!!

When you are putting a chicken on the grill on the stand you used do the following. I assume you have a can inside the bird. Add garlic, thyme and sage with a dark beer. Use a small potato to block off the neck opening from the outside and cover with the neck skin and use tooth picks to hold it closed. Then use the same liquid mixture on the pan and ensure it stay full. This will add a great flavor and the potato will cause the meat to steam from the inside out and make it super juicy. Weber makes a great seasoning called "Beer Can Chicken" cover the outside. i typically use about 1/2 a container for 1 chicken. Enjoy. Love the channel.

Thank you for sharing! You should definitely cap the electric wire conduit by the greenhouse to keep mice out. It’s a cheap preventative measure with a big downside risk (the plants freeze because the mice chewed through the wires). Different varieties of corn have different kernel sizes so I suggest you plant several varieties next year and see which your family likes best.

  • @Rowdymotmot

Easy way to husk corn is to take a paring knife split each side with a slit from top to bottom. Grab the silks and pull down. When we kids got old enough we could do both sides and break off the end of the stem attached to the cob at the same time. We used to process about 800 ears in two days this way. I am really missing doing this and canning too.

lack of water does have an effect on kernel/cob size. As a child I hade a great yield when I planted them very closely in the rows - rows usual distance apart- I got more cobs per stock than when I planted them the usual distance apart, I was only growing a small amount in a backyard garden and hand picking, but it should work as well in a larger plot. I just figured that they naturally grow close together if a cob falls on the ground so I tried it. I planted them only about 3 inches apart so they had just enough room and at maturity were like a solid wall of stocks. they're new varieties of sweet corn that convert their sugar into starch much slower so you don't have to cook them right away like regular sweet corn should be, able to store in wet paper bag covered with a plastic bag in the fridge for up to a week. Older family friend use to grow "Candy Corn" - smaller pearl white, kernels that tasted amazing even after being in a deep freeze for a whole year, I have not been able to find Candy Corn seeds in storers, I believe she ordered them from a seed catalogue.

Al, Gina and Olivia, A great recipie for corn, keep the husks on soak them in water. Hour or overnight, with a teasp of salt and a 1/4 c of sugar, drain of excess water, couple min, put the ears of corn on the grill, husks and all, turn after getting grill marks on each side , should take about 10 min or less , the sugar tenderizes the corn while it steams in the husks. Also aids in adding grill marks. Peel back husks, tie them to make a handle, butter s and p and oh my! Tasty roasted corn on the grill. Have a great day !

Those zip ties are so much better than the metal clamps (tension or nut tightened). Wife sent me on a repair expedition to fix her dryer vent and often it brought me close to expressing myself with a varied array of expletives.

The Horn worm is the Luna moth larva. My chickens won't touch them with a ten foot pole. I put 1/4" hardware cloth around and over my tomatoes, and that seems to take care of the problem. If the moths can't get in, they can't lay eggs. What do you do with your extra eggs? I freeze some, and I water glass the others. Lack of water on the sweet corn. Last weekend we put up 22 half pints for corn casserole, 46 quarts, and 168 pints. I'm tired of corn. Lol.

Gina, try just putting the corn in the grill with the chicken. It will steam it's self in it's natural cover. Delicious.

Plus when you peel it the hair comes off so easily. Or cook in oven 350 degrees for 30 minutes, right on the rack, peel it back and you have a handle.

Have you found the ducks yet? Sometimes when it's hot like that, ducks like most dark wet or damp places. Maybe do you have a creek, spring ,or watering hole somewhere in the woods close? Might be nesting somewhere.

I was hoping too that Maverick and Goose where back. So sad, I hope they come back soon and nothing happened to them. Watching you all pick corn was bitter sweet, I used to help my husband when he picked sweet corn. Your ears look like they filled out well. If you didn't get enough rain, they wouldn't have filled out. You want small kernels or at least that is how we liked eating it. We ate it tender, not hard. When the kennels get big it is getting "hard". When canning, we let it go longer in the field to get bigger kernels, not to big though! Supper indeed looked very yummy!

Maverick & Goose may have found some water somewhere. Ducks need to be able to get their heads wet. Supply them with some sort of water source that allows them to at least dunk their heads.

Have you checked down at the creek? The ducks could have gone there and forgot how to get back. Hopefully, nothing got them. A coyote would have snatched them and moved off so maybe no feathers would be found. I found a bill and feet only when one got one of my ducks.
When you have poo on eggs my grandpa said it was time to deworm the chickens.
The bumblebees would probably appreciate a shallow dish of water with some pebbles under one of the holes in the drip line. Clean water and pebbles to avoid drowning- better than having to get moisture from the dirt.
