Elderberries have been one of my favorite plants to grow in my backyard food forest. They are so easy to propagate I end up giving so many cuttings away! Thanks for sharing your method!
your so welcome, Congratulations on creating a food forest. have you looked into Arena Berries, you would not be disapointed in this amazing berry to add to backyard.
so sorry its been a year and I'm only getting back to you now. Not sure if you still would like to see it, I am planting some in the next week or so, I could show you if your still intrested
@@power-berryfarm2500 yep. still interested in seeing them come out of the bag. I have some cuttings in the fridge atm. Will be putting them in some dirt indoors in march. i had heard that it was easier (rooted more successfully) to plant new growth in spring. I tried that last spring. softwood,. not much success. what little success I do get, is with hardwood. I like the bag planting, wonder how they drain. does the soil get so soggy that it gets funky and rots the roots.? I also found that skinnier cuttings rarely root.. for me.. I have unlimited supply of wild elderberry plants. so I have a row of 2 yr olds out in the garden. they did well and got ok abundance of berrys, but the birds got ALL last yr. will use netting this yr. even in the wild there were many bushes totally filled with berries. and then the birds came and within 2 weeks ALL gone.ty
Thank you so much !! Thinking outside the box seem to be my specialty with the budget I have. You Subscribed! Thank you !! that means so much, I hope you enjoy my adventures.
Love your videos. I can learn from you. I am harvesting wild elderberries now. I am getting too old to hike over these steep mountains to gather the wild, but would love to plant my own. I live in WVA. What state do you live in. I like the bag method in this video. Have been making elderberry elixir for 5 years. Sold hundreds of bottles when the pandemic started. Still selling it.
Hi I hear you, wild crafting is quite the hike, also what discouraged me was ticks, after I had two I had to remove, that was when I decided to grow mine. definitely you should grow your own. Even if you have a small yard, or no yard I have grown in large pots they love to grow everywhere spreading there goodness. If you plant in your yard, beaware of suckers you may have to deal with. They tend to pop up. no big deal . I Live in Quebec
I read the comments Befire watching. True thst you are lovely in appearance and clever. My elderberry plants are purchased and the same size as your cuttings lol but maybe next year. Other than that one berry you mentioned, Arona, are there ANY other plants you know of which can be propagated this way? Especially edibles? I am so broke. Ty for your time and may God Yah bless your garden! 😁
This was my first time to see this video and I learn a lot espically how to know if the cutting is good or not I very much would like to grow my own elderberries. I like the bag method and can see my self learning to do that . Can a person get cuutings from elderberries growing in the country side
well I would use the soil in the time of planting in there new spot, or larger pot, trust me those roots will take most of that soil. Happy Elderberry Growing
Aww Thank you your so sweet, I adore possitive people. I do my cutting at the end of dormancy but literally if I had a tree brach that broke in the summer I put it in a pot and it would grow. you would idealy take the new growth stem of last year, and ideally make sure there is two sets of nodes plant the bottom nodes in soil, and watch the top nodes grow. I hope this has helped you. Happy Edlerberry Growing
Great idea with the bag! Can you propagate elder with soft cuttings in the spring? I've been told yes but don't know and if so must they be brown bark and not green semi hard?
you could use any, trust me. But young growth from the prior year is best, and if cutting from the mother tree, try do it while dormant, so not to damage the growth of the mother tree. but if its just a few there is no concern for worry.
Are you using regular potting soil in bags to start your cuttings? This would work great in my greenhouse. And are there holes in the bottom of the bag? Thank you ☕️🧤
I apologize for replying so late, Yes the green house will grow amazing elderberries. I start them with organic starter soil. Yes punch holes on bottom of bags for drainage.
Oops...... I think I may have rotted mine. I have not changed the water and it smells pretty bad. No roots thus far, however, the branches are completely leafed out with new leaves so maybe I'll hope is not lost. Should I toss them and start over?
Could I suggest adding some willow bark water to your steeping or irrigation water. Apparently the willow bark contains a natural Aspirin compound which aids rooting. You can either steep the bark or chunks of branch in hot water and make a rooting compound tea, or steep the same for about 48hrs in cold water. You could maybe try an experiment to see if this method works for you.
They love to thrive, you may get a flower that same year of planting, and in a year or two you will have fruit, and every year after that it will grow more and more fruit.
Aww your so sweet to want to support me. I can if you live in Canada. I don't know the law about shipping to other countries. Thank you for watching my video.
That was good but that was how to plant them. I'd like to know how to grow them. Mine sre on my third year and they are finally grtting berries but they are disappearing. They are tiny green dots fally off their sprigs. Don't say the birds are getting them. I need their nutrient requirements.
Full sun. Elderberry likes a lot of water but need good drainage. You say they're setting fruit but the berries are dropping off. I've got a volunteer plant growing on the north side of a big Hackberry tree within its shade and it does the same thing. Here in southeast Nebraska elderberry grows like a weed, especially along the bottom boundaries of row crop fields. They get a lot of nutritional runoff from the fields. You might try applying some hydrated lime (known as quick lime at nurseries) and see if you get results. It's immediately available to the plants but the downside is you'll have to apply every year. If results are favorable find yourself some agriculture lime. First year you'll get no benefit. It starts coming into effect on the second year and will do its thing for 3-4 more years before re-application. A soil analysis is recommended to know how much to apply. Commercially we apply between 1-2 tons PER ACRE on average ground. What it boils down to is if the Ph balance of the soil isn't correct you can have all the nutrients right there for the plant but it'll be "locked up". Biggest mistake gardeners make is throwing too much nitrogen at plants, resulting in a LOT of vegetative growth and no produce (fruit).
@@carfvallrightsreservedwith6649 thank you. They grow in swampy water here in Florida. I imagine dead rotting leaves, sticks, logs. Also urine helped. 1:10 ratio. The plants did much better this year. Next year I'll have to have bird netting.
@@nancyfahey7518 yes definatly bird netting. yes they love Nitrogen feeding. if your worried about not getting a big crop, you can try feeding them in the spring, and in the fall, to ensure they are well feed. and enough water. Happy Elderberry Growing. Thank you for sharing.
@@power-berryfarm2500 thank you. I did cut them back before the cold hit. And they grew back alot healthier then before. I have high hopes fore this season.

Awesome idea using the potting soil bag! Subbed!
Work smarter not harder lol
You can accelerate root formation by using "willow water", a fantastic natural rooting hormone. Easy to make too.
YES I believe I had tried this , but simply just using water works noting eles is needed
honestly you only need water. Thats it!

Can you do roses like this too?
I would love to give you answers to this but I do not know, but I have with Aronia Berries and it did work, but I had to use a organic growing powder.
How long (weeks)should cuttings stay in bag before transplanting. Thanks
oh you will see the plants growing like bad weeds, if you are curious punch a hole in the bag to see how the roots are.
Thank You for watching. You will know, it will get so packed, but to be safe poke a hole with your finger and check root growth. Hope this has helped.

Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. Yes you must change the water, with any cutting you must change the water so its clean.
Once these cuttings are planted, how many years till they bear fruit.
Usually 1-2 years
