What a lovely story. You know a guy is serious when he flies to your home country and spends his days helping the family on an Austrian farm on the countryside. There's probably no bigger culture shock than that. I had to leave Austria the same way you had to leave NZ. Good luck to you, I hope my home country will continue to treat you well!
The biggest culture shocks for most people (especially Americans tho) is „kids“ drinking and smoking and „pedophilia“ being allowed. Idk why but Americans see and treat teens like kids so 15 year olds partying is basically drinking kids to them and age of consent at 14 is legal pedophilia to them 😂. I guess 14 is pretty young but they would also be mad if it was 17. I once had an american lose his shit because i told him that my gf is 17 and i was 18. it’s hilarious because it makes them hella mad. I feel for American teens lol. Being treated like a kid and kept away and sheltered from everything that’s part of growing up must be terrible
So happy for you. I did the opposite some 20 years ago, now living in NZ with strong connections back to Austria, trying to go back every 2 years. The two countries share a lot yet are incredibly different. Hope you're still happy there!
I've only seen your shorts lately but man this video is super nice, this story sounds like it could be a romantic movie, I hope I find my luck like this one day too
Chapeau!

Thanks for posting your story. I had a similiar experience to yours as an English speaker, except twenty years earlier. I met a nice Austrian woman and moved to Vienna, learned Hochdeutsch as quickly as I could (about a year to be reasonably "fluent", focus on the 'reasonably'), but then struggled with the dialect for the next two years. You speak it much better than I do. Now that same nice Austrian woman wants to come to the states for a visit - jo, passt ... and therefore I'm working on understanding dialect (kann ned schaden, ge?). Your videos are helping! Really interesting and cool story. They are a really fun way to explore the Alps. I'm sure there are some amzing ones in the mountains around Salzburg
Your story is beautiful. I am Vietnamese and living in Bavaria now. I traveled around South East Asia before and met some cool backpackers, I am admiring their free spirit, living their moment, packing up their bags and discovering the whole. And you are one of them. Glad to e-meet you. All the best!

Within all the discomfort there is so much happiness. Resonates with me a lot since I had the same feeling when I was backpacking New Zealand. Leaving comfort zones does great things.😊
Awesome story! I can relate two ways: I am from Salzburg (and I love how you share your Kiwi perspective on my home country and region in all its glorious weirdness), and I moved to Norway when I was 23 (and can relate to being an expat and all that brings about). Anyway, thanks for sharing, and keep up the shorts. They are AWESOME.

Certainly, the phrase "through my discomfort came pleasure" is a profound statement that warrants extended contemplation. My initial reaction is to agree, as it's often the case that after enduring significant hardship, things generally improve. However, is enduring pain truly the gateway to a fulfilling life? Upon reflection and considering my own experiences, I find this notion resonates with me. The challenges I've dreaded, which represent life's painful moments, have often led to my greatest joys upon conquering them. Looking back, overcoming adversity is indeed a source of pride, but it's crucial to acknowledge that prolonged suffering can also lead to trauma, depression, and other emotional burdens. Final thought: Could enduring a lengthy depression merely be a precursor to immense happiness upon its resolution? 🤔
Or in Reverse: Comfort makes you rest, and resting is not fun, at least in the long run. It's not a suffering in the idea of pain, it's just a suffering of walking vs. sitting down. Effort. Sometimes it just feels better, to have some external drive, somebody forcing you to do something, or just asking for help. Than having the stress to spend your spare time, cause you have a comfortable situation. A good example for this dilemma are "mens fun park", where you pay money to be allowed to drive an excavator, caterpiller, forklift whatever, versus beeing in need of money, do the very same thing, but get paid for it. The latter feels better, and is anything but depressing. Effort and usefulness create pride and self-confidence ! OK, maybe after 20 years on a caterpillar you get bored and depressed.
It sounds all nice but we all know that he wanted to go to australia but got confused at the airport

A good example for this dilemma are "mens fun park", where you pay money to be allowed to drive an excavator, caterpiller, forklift whatever,
versus beeing in need of money, do the very same thing, but get paid for it. The latter feels better, and is anything but depressing.
Effort and usefulness create pride and self-confidence ! OK, maybe after 20 years on a caterpillar you get bored and depressed.
des isch a guater bursch des!! ;)
