This man made one of if not the best RPG I've played in years (almost entirely by himself as I understand it), that is written exceptionally well, has incredible artwork, and I hear has a not-insignificant run time of 15-20 hours, all while working a regular day job *and* raising kids. I am blown away. I don't want to spoil anything, but I'll say this: he didn't have to write the game to come out swinging so hard right from the beginning, by which I mean the short but impactful well segment at the mostly abandoned farmstead that serves as the first inn of the game, but he did and I respect him for it immensely.
This game honestly has no business being this good. The Almighty Swen Vincke even shouted out the game and mentioned how much he is enjoying it. I hope it becomes a financial success and more games like it follow suit.
Enjoying the game very much. Played the demo over and over. Waited and now I am addicted. Especially happy with the captivating story. Thank you for creati g this.
Skald is SUCH A GREAT GAME! And I'm relieved with this interview because now that I know the developer, I am 100% confident that we are in good hands for the future. Will be following whatever this guy puts out, for SURE.
Loving the game so far! I have a movie recommend for the dev after hearing some things he likes; It's a noir/lovecraftian movie that came out in 2017 called Residue. It has Matt Frewer (Max Headroom from the eighties) in it. It has a slow start but is a great story if you like the genre. We need more games like yours!
Good things take some time. Skald took its time and we waited, and it paid off 200%. Such a fantastic throwback to old RPGs but also stands on its own without having to rely on nostalgia. Good stuff.
"i did the best i could given the circumstances" My dude! I'm not the biggest fan of the cRPGs, i haven't played alot, even though i always wanted, and i'm so hooked on this game.
I played the demo and i was surprised back then you responeded to some of my critiqes and now i got the game so far i am not to far not much time to play but man well done and bravoe hats off before i was the guy who was saying the theif was over tuned and was wondering about the cave and you were like it was saposed to sapwn in some slimes and it wasnt working any way 100% happy with it so far I am hoping i can push my way back to the 1st town where the demo ended I went with the armsmaster just as that seems like a good starting class to go with I hope the game sells really well so I can see more games like this made by you thanks so much for listening to the feed back and the skill trees are amazing too by the way.
Im playing as well-- the C64-- hints sold it to me. Now the story is keeping me addicted to it. The level up system is great as well. I laughed going into console mode as well.
The thing is, the heroic fantasy of the 80s/90s would be fresh today. It’s cynical grimdark nihilism that has overstayed its welcome now. Injecting a return to heroic stories might go a long ways towards lifting the oppressive shroud of despair hanging over so many today. Those games we played as an adolescent growing up exerted a subtle influence on what kind of man we wanted to see ourselves grow into. We’d be fools not to examine what we’re doing to our current adolescents by exchanging the protagonists of heroic fantasy, righting wrongs, living honorable lives, and putting others before self for cynical, violent, damaged, solitary anti-heroes. Wonderful game in every regard, I just bring this up in response to his comment about his writing style taking inspiration more from game of thrones and less from the heroic fantasy of the 90s.
Maybe someone can try it, but if you try to revisit stories like that, they are quite cheesy. These heroes are always so courageous and daring because nothing bad can ever happen to them, they just keep going being heroic forever. They may as well be Superman, who has classically been the most difficult superhero to make into a game because he's so invulnerable. Look at any actual real life people who are considered heroes - war vets, someone who rescued/saved someone else, and they all defer their heroism - "The true heroes are the ones that didn't make it" or "I was just there at the right time, anyone would have done what I did." So, maybe it could have a come back, but right now heroic fantasy feels like a bygone era.
I was playing Pool of Radiance and loving it, so imagine my joy when I saw a modernized version of that style. I'm still at the beginning, but I'm enjoying it so much. I had never heard about it, but I bought it as soon as a review appeared. I hope there are sequels, other stories, DLCs. Congratulations to Anders!
Game's good! I think even if it fails commercially. this guy is gonna get a job at Larian... unless Vincke isn't going to enjoy this, which I doubt. But then it seems the genre's gonna lose like the last guy standing who thinks that C/RPGs and horror work. Which would be a pity. There's been multiple games in the 1990s in particular, even Bloodlines later on.... and then, nothing.
Really liked Skald. Hope for a DLC or even a new game on the same engine, but with little more open world, more like Ultima (you know, you could go wherever you want searching for your main quest clues)
Beat the game a couple days ago. Its my favorite game so far of 2024. This interview was great and it sounds like the developers creative influences are very similar to my own. And e is absolutely right about True Detective season 1 (and only season 1 lol).
It's such a great game! I am loving it. Brings me back to when I was a kid playing Ultima games and others. Skald is just so much fun. I have been playing the hell out of it in my free time. Great work, great interview!
Haha, well, I am married with 2 girls, so my wife also has to feel comfortable in our bedroom. The pink guitar was made custom by my friend as a gift when my first daughter was born. Also it's clean. I'm sure these are the "7yr old girl" things you noticed?
@@overleveledgames My little sister had an all white room from like 3-8 years old. She then painted clouds onto a blue ceiling and it stayed that way for another 10 years. If you share it with a wife I have to give you a pass tho. I do shit for my wife like this too.

Dude, the well segment is such a great introductory side quest to get you immersed into the vibe of the game
Some big studio needs to scoop this guy up and give him a bunch of money and talent and time to do whatever the hell he wants with them

As soon as I saw the Mork Borg book on the Author's shelf, I knew this was special.
Mind translating for a normie?

As a huge fan of Lovecraft, this game was an experience

Already bought it. Superb writing, Nerdstalgia overload!

Console mode caught me off guard, haha
Great game!

Or maybe you need to grow up.

For the algorithm 🫡
A true believer
Bought it on a whim yesterday and played 8 hours. Love when that happens. Great job dev!
Good insight and awesome looking game!
I'm glad you like it, and I hope you get a chance to pick it up!
Such a great interview! Very personal, humble, honest and touching. Thank you! The game looks amazing, too. I will buy the deluxe version on Steam.

Mörk Borg enjoyer!
What a great game, bravo! Took my time too completing it, instead of speed running. Skald needs more recognition!
