  • Rebuilding the engine that got water logged in a hurricane then someone tried to start it with water in the cylinders and bent a rod. Then to top that off they removed the head and let it sit in the elements opened up for years and seized the engine . Two afternoons and i got this this back together and tried to start.

Update on the yanmar diesel... This diesel was flooded on the engine room of a sailing catamaran during a hurricane with a previous owner, Scott and I have rescued 7 buses together and Scott was kind enough to offer to give it a go on repairing the yanmar... The previous owner had taken the engine apart and fresh water had done a good job of making an added mess of everything...
Scott is really amazing at being able to go with the flow and figure ways to get most anything done...and done well...
The update is that we now have put over 600 hours on that engine this past charter season and it's running better than the one that was perfect in the other hull.... Thanks again Scott...

I am continually amazed at the conditions you are working in. In 1959, I rebuilt a 1949 overheated Chevrolet six (I don't remember the displacement) that had set in the Arizona desert for several years. Bored out.060 over it was a powerhouse for the time. It had shims and plastic tell-tales for clearance on the main and rod bears. I had to turn it over with a breaker bar many times before it would crank and it ran hot for several miles before the bearings "cured".

I just did this as a favor for a friend. It was more of a challenge. I have never once worked on a 4 stroke diesel ever. And since someone else took it apart and it was missing some parts it was crazy that we got it running in two afternoons.

    Gentleman,
I have to disagree with your opinion that Scot is a grade A mechanic. Not even close. My dad was Navy boilermaker for 20 years so I got to know quite a few people at Charlestown Navy Yard and when they had a mechanical problem they couldn't figure out they called on an old timer who should have retired years earlier but they kept him on for his expertise.
You Scott are the first mechanic I've seen and gotten to know equal to the old " CHIEF MASTER MECHANIC "
You are hereby promoted to Chief Master Mechanic.
You have never seen an engine you couldn't fix!
    Cheers!

Once again, fantastic work, thanks for posting this. WD40 starting fluid, I love it! Speaks volumes for the build quality of Yanmar diesel engines! Those battery powered ratchet wrenches are sure less restrictive then the air powered versions I began using 40 yrs ago. No air hose to get in the way. I am surprised that the fuel pump and injectors worked after suffering water ingestion. That boat owner was lucky to have found you, but he looks like the same guy in the MCI bus video with the snapped pinion, so I guess he already had your number.

I am kind of the opposite of you in regards to the contents of the toolbox. I have all metric tools and then a few standard sizes for the in between ones. 5/16" = 8mm, 7/16" = 11mm, 1/2" = 13mm and so on. So I keep standard wrenches and sockets for things that don't fit a metric size well.

I wouldn't plan a long cruise with that engine. With the lifters in such rusty shape, I am sure the camshaft will be toast in short order.

I hope you pulled the water pump cover and looked at the rubber impeller for missing paddles. It is a good idea to replace them anyway. If there are any missing paddles you need to look at the heat exchanger down stream of the water pump and rod it out if you see anything in it...Common cause of over-heating on a Yanmar.

My Hat is always off to you and wish I had your help and expertise back when I was running those Roger Penske 16V92 DDEC pair of engines in the 70' Sportfish... We might have got a lot more Marlin fishing done..

There was nothing wrong with that connecting rod.
That was nothing more than a “gentleman’s curve” it’s totally fine.
A slight bend is nothing to be alarmed about and is actually built into the specs.

Don't get that assembly lube on ya! It's known to the State of California to cause buck teeth in laboratory animals!

@@BusGreaseMonkey I knew it'd run - been there many times, and have faith in your perseverance and skills, too. Only thing I worried about was the little fuel pumps - they can be finicky and refuse to pump - had luck riding shotgun with ya there!

They don’t make an oil pan gasket, it’s like that from the factory. And yes he wanted to even see if it could be running again.
