Clive loved Maurice deeply, I do think he still loved him when he got married, and probably would the rest of his life. But his fear was so strong that it overpowered him and he couldn't give Maurice what he needed. So Clive was stuck in a loveless marriage, with a nice girl, who he could pretty much hide in plain sight with. I think Clive and his wife loved each other, but as friends and it wouldn't be more than that.
It's 2017 and there's a Muslim boy I know who is going to end up like Clive I fear. Good guy, nice girl - but three people who really aren't going to end up living their Truth.
eleanor7 couldn’t agree more, I could assume that feeling from some scenes where he kind of reluctant to touching Anne in bed and in the end of the movie. Certainly, He will live in regret when he wants to shut the window off but bewildered ...but I wished that he can be more responsible of what he chose in the end of the story. Really. I find it’s amusing between he and Maurice in developing such love romantic seduction.
Clive and Maurice stole my heart and shattered it. Their story is heartbreakingly beautiful. They would have lasted had they been born in a different time, thank you for this great video ❤️
Clive is based on Forster's closest friend (and possibly one of his greatest love) - Hugh Owen Meredith, a poet and economist. Forster was deeply in love with him and the two had a very similar love affair to Maurice and Clive. In fact, he dedicates 'A Room With A View' to HOM. But it's dedicated to him as a farewell unbeknownst to Meredith. Sadly, like Clive, HOM would eventually marry. Many of Forster's characters are modeled after Meredith including George Emerson. When Forster wrote Maurice, he and HOM had begun drifting apart but HOM was one of the few people Forster showed a very early manuscript of Maurice to. Forster was dismayed at HOM's reception of the manuscript. Clive's character devolves essentially because Forster was heartbroken to find that their friendship had changed and they had drifted apart. Upon hearing of Meredith's passing in 1964, Forster was said to be devastated and mourned the loss of his first love saying "he was very beautiful at the beginning of the century," despite drifting apart decades earlier. (Wendy, Moffat - A Great Unrecorded History, A New Life of E. M. Forster)
Thank you, friend. It's nice to see a 'Maurice' fanvid which, unusually, focuses on Clive Durham. His predicament tends, in these more enlightened times (Forster dedicated the novel To A Happier Year) to be under-appreciated. I'd like (as the screenwriter of this movie: still, to my mind, the best work that Hughie ever did, and certainly the one which showed him at the very height of his beauty) to think that the film did something - albeit not as much as the novel - to bring that 'happier year' to pass....
I just have to say that thank you, Kit for your and James' work. I would even dare say that you've improved on certain aspects of the book. Maurice is a masterpiece. Timeless and beautifully moving.
I know the actors all got hundreds of letters afterwards from people saying how much the film helped them. And now with subtitled versions being seen around the world, it continues to help. 💖
When u are torn apart between being accepted by the society at that time and also to love someone..i can understand how clive feels....he is not cruel..he just want to refrain everyone from hurting maurice...😔
their relationship stolen me and kept me in their bubble. i couldn’t even with the ending, i actually was disappointed in the end, i was crying. but, i cant change the past. 1980s is gone, it’s not here anymore.
I disagree with a great amount of these comments. Clive was not selfish like these comments claim, he was just very cautious and I believe he acted as though he didn’t want Maurice anymore because he knew giving Maurice that secretive long-distant life forever wasn’t fair. He made the sacrifice and now has to see his love with another: Maurice and scudder :(

Sadly that's true. Power and name is much more important to Clive than actual love.
I would not blame him. Even today it's so hard for some people to get to love who they want. It's very sad what happened to Clive.
@@timothyj1966 It's tragic...
I shipped them sooo hard. 😢 But it was really tough living as a homosexual at that time so I totally get why Clive did it.
The ending scene is my favourite ❤
Best gay movie I've ever seen

@@rumblefish9 So sad to hear, but it took that to happen for him to create his beautiful work so I guess everything happens for a reason 😔❤️

Such a beautiful, beautiful video! I love this movie. One of my favorites of all time. The Maurice/Clive relationship is so complex. I adore them.
Oh God.. It's amazing. Ii have tears in my eyes.
Clive loved Maurice deeply, but denied it for fear of being rejected. But Alec came into Maurice's life to show him that he could feel loved.

Maurice could sacrifice his life for Clive, and obviously Clive betrayed Maurice, I’m happy he found Alec after all
This is beautiful
