The staggering amount of unique tech rules in BattleTech could easily fill a video series. I hope to see you do said series. Edit: Amazing video with very clear examples, well done.
The C3 system has been available in BattleTech for a very long time, but no one ever uses it. For a game store tournament years ago, I custom built the Lance my friends and I played. Since I'm good at making mechs, but not driving them, I took the command mech with the C3 master. Not only did we win, but our mechs were constantly looked over to make sure they were correct. Also, we had repeated claims against us for cheating because of our use of the C3 system. We used it exactly as you laid it out here. Very simple to use. No one uses it.
I use C3i a fair amount - but then again I have a decent WoB collection I like to break out from time to time. The problem with C3 is balancing it - if you're paying for it with bv the surcharge can get pretty hefty really quickly. A C3i Level II is going to carry a painful 30% surcharge and if you decide to live the dream and field a C3 networked company you'll end up paying a 60% surcharge! Alternatively, if you balance by some other method then you get the C3 networks considerable capabilities essentially for free.
@ogrehaslayers605 Yes, 5% per C3 linked unit in the force, so if you gave a lance of four mechs that's 5x4=20, so multiply everything in the lance by 20% after skill modifiers.
The BV cost for C3 is insane for trying to get a scratch BV game assembled. I wonder if it could be re-visit in the future. Not to mention the prevalence of ECM now.
Thanks for the info. I got a local game store that is doing a Word of Blake event at about 10k BV. I look forward to incorporating C3 network into my force as it's a largely unused system in my meta. The real question will be what silly Mechs can I find to use this system to it's max. I will need to see if any of my LRM boats have a C3I and Arrow IV on a variant.
TAG is like a multifrequency laser designator. I understand that TAG will remove: * Target modifier of target * Indirect fire modifier * Spotter attacker modifier ... for any semi-active weapons hitting a TAGged target. Is that correct? After movement, TAG is declared on a target. (it is a phase of its own between movement and weapon attack phases) If TAG fails to hit, proceed normally. Else, all semi-active weapons will hit the TAGged target as per TAG rules.
there's a reason why large battles are so slow using classic cool rules...I like em, but thats why its cool to run only a max of a lance or two for a battle scenario using the minis.
If my logic is correct, since NARC is an EM beacon, ECM would be able to block signal from target to attacker in the same way ECM blocks C3, but C3 affects range modifiers, while NARC is about cluster hits. Am I right? NARC guides all missiles to target AFAIK.
I know how the c3 systems work... my question is about how too make them work well... for larger battles. (This is an open question, to anybody who wants to answer. I'm really looking for some feedback.) The ic3 can be used for six connected units... Which is better? Whole mixed lances, that can't communicate with each other? Or the master/slave system, that only let's you communicate with other command units? Personally, Im mostly concerned about weight efficiency... so I don't always accurately gauge BV, or C-Bill cost... and that's why I'm asking the internet.... And too clarify, by large battles... I mean, 3+ Lances with everything.(infantry, vehicles, battle armor, aerotech, everthing...)
Recently challenged to create a three mech unit 3050 era no higher than 4000 BV. So why not C3? Aww, nothing on the Nova CEWS? ;) Would have thought the Boosted C3, or backup Masters could have had a mention, though. Unlike the Nova, those see some use in later eras where ECM becomes a lot more common.
New to BT. Say i have 1 sprint c3s + 2xStriker(ammo). Would the strikers benefit from being master + master emergency? Now they dont come with c3m or c3me and i can not find anything on tonnage. How do i or would i add a c3m(e) to them? Or can only specific mechs get the c3 systems? Thank you.
Artemis requires one Artemis FCS installed per missile system using Artemis capable ammo. So if you have LRM5 and LRM10 in your mech, both using Artemis ammo, you need to install 2 Artemis FCS. Artemis increases accuracy by affecting cluster hit. It uses IR designator. Right?
Answered my own question: "Any weapon attack from a weapon at Extreme Range using a C3 System adds 1 range bracket beyond the closest friendly unit in the C3 system. For example, if a weapon is firing at Extreme Range and the closest friendly unit is at Short Range, the firing unit would determine the final Modified To-Hit Number as though the closest friendly unit was at Medium Range." And it doesn't work at LOS range at all.
@@MahiMahi-oiasdf I was gonna type out that exact same quote from the book. (I did have to look it up because I can count the number of games I've used Extreme Range in on one finger.)
C3i was first created by Comstar in the early 3050s (from Draconis Combine C3 tech). It entered production in 3062 for Comstar (really the Word of Blake under the guise of Comstar) and became extinct in 3085 at the close of the Jihad with the dissolution of the ComGuards. It really is primarily a thing used by Word of Blake (yes, some not so Wobbly Comstar units use it as well... but not as ruthlessly or brutally as the WoB), and their Celestial Omnis are the best examples.
@@SleeplessRonin The Ghost Bears also used it, primarily in the Omega Galaxy, in the late 3080's and 3090's. However, they were forced to destroy their copies and dismantle their production by the RotS.
This is absolutely excellent. Electronic warfare in Battletech needs this kind of breakdown. Any plan for videos on NARC, ECCM, Artemis, and TAG?
Yes. I do hope to get to all of those (cannot say exactly when). NARC and Artemis will be one video, TAG and ECCM may each get their own.
@@SleeplessRonin Cool. I don't mind being patient. Knowing that they are on the list is enough.

I made a build of the Perseus Omni with C3M. IS Omnis with C3 and BA ftw. :)
That's why every Lance needs at least 1 unit with ECM
@@mattbowden4996what is this surcharge you're talking about? Is there an extra BV cost after you've already paid the BV for the individual units???
@ogrehaslayers605 Yes, 5% per C3 linked unit in the force, so if you gave a lance of four mechs that's 5x4=20, so multiply everything in the lance by 20% after skill modifiers.
This is the best description of the C3 Command Unit System. Thank you!
Thanks, I learned better about what C3 is through examples like this than what was written.
