APIVAR - Amazing Mite Drop (And it Just Keeps Killing!)

I put Apivar (Amitraz) strips in 2 weeks ago, cleared the Varroa mite boards and then showed you how many mites fell in the first week. Then I cleared the mite boards again and this video is the mite drop from the second week. (These are not cumulative results.) All but one hive had a significant, noticeable reduction in the number of mites. The OAK hive only had three mites after one week, but about 20 fell in the second week, which means those 20 mites probably emerged from capped brood. Either way, I'll take 20 dropped mites any day. We still have 4 more weeks of mite killing action ahead of us!

Me too! Actually, these videos got me though one of the worst times of my life (my husband completed suicide and I couldn’t watch tv or movies without feeling triggered). I watched these bee keeping videos to calm my mind. I love them and need so much I actually got a tattoo of bees on my arm.

I think that in every colony what we are seeing here is mostly mites that last week were hiding in capped cells and so were not vulnerable to the Apivar. Which is clearly why you have to do this for four weeks! The hive that had four the first week and 20 this week is good indication of how you can test and get a false sense of security. Had you tested that colony using the standard 300 bees, you might have caught one of those mites. And a week later there were 20 more loose in the colony, but if you don't test weekly - and who does? - you would not have known it. Clean them out Jim. That is the only answer, at least for the rest of the winter.

Thank you for this and the previous video related to Apivar and mites. I never thought about putting the sticky board under the hive during mite treatment to see how it was working. A great idea! I had not planned on treating my hive any more this year (I used Hopguard 3 in August) but went ahead and hung some Apivar strips and used the sticky boards. So far, LOTS of mites being killed! I was shocked by the number of mites in the hive as previous testing didn't reveal this.
Hello. Remember that ant eats Varroa from board. So the board results are ambiguous. And not necessarily show how many mittes are really in hive. Sorry for my english.

In my opinion, the most important thing is to keep track of how much varroa you have after treatment. that's what I'm focusing on. you can have varroa outbreaks from your neighbors. a golden rule is for everyone to apply the treatments at the same time

Huh, I wish there was some kind of apivar like brush strip or something that you mounted to the entrance so they brushed them off on the way in and never made it inside the hive.

I think Maple hive needs to be re-queened.
They may look strong right now, but the workers just aren't hygienic enough, and that mite load will kill the hive over winter anyway.

In the studies I looked at apivar kills the most bees with in 30 days after that it falls off.

Hi Jim, I'm guessing Maple is your strongest hive and probably has the most brood in it. I wonder if they are picking up mites from other hives ? Did you have a lot of robbing over the few weeks or months ? Congrats on the upcoming 100k Subs. UA-cam is gonna send a nice silver plaque 😀
Maple is a big hive and they were one I didn’t split so there was no brood break. Although, it appears they may have superseded the queen in early September. I saw emerged queen cells a couple videos ago, but no noticeable brood reduction. Not sure what happened. Not a swarm because the population stayed pretty huge. If anything, They we’re the hive getting robbed. Whenever I saw robbing, that hive seemed to have the most pressure.

Apivar kills the mites, not the bees.
With brood rearing wrapping up for the year, I would worry about doing a wash test as what's in there as young bees needs to last all winter. Test or not test. Hard question.
Agreed. It’s more weather dependent. The population in there is massive. A 300 bee sample will hardly dent the cluster. I’m more worried about breaking the seal on the lid and all the organization in the brood nest. If we get a couple warm days in a row I might try, but the test will just be a data point and proof the Apivar had an effect or not. If there’s still a high mite load all I’ll be able to do is OA, which I’m planning on doing anyway.

It’s just coroplast. They come with screened bottom boards you purchase.

How come you're not using them any longer? I'm new to the channel so this may be a silly question. On the bottom slabs where the dead mites collect, there looked to be ants (or some similar insect) walking around. Are they harmful/bothersome to the bees? And do they find their way into the hives or are they brought in by bees?
The ant are looking for bits of pollen and other hive debris. They won’t hurt a strong hive.
Did you do a late Fall (broodless) hard single Oxalic acid dosing and what was your finally mite wash count?
Yes. I hit them right before the freeze started. I saw more mite drop on the boards after the vapor. It was too late (cold) to pull frames for a mite wash. I did not want to disrupt them. Not much I could do at that point anyway. I’m hoping for one more warmish day to get up there and do one more OAV treatment.
That Maple Hive was so bad. Maybe at the end you should do another shot of OV for good measure.

Good to see you disproving the APIVAR myths going around. Though, could it be possible that mites in other states have grown resistant?
My guess and it's only a guess is that there are manufacture errors in the strips. It would be interesting to test the strips from hives that didn't get good control.

They don’t eat much.
Im curious- do the mites fall off randomly or do they die right where the strips are?
The bees walk over the strips and get the miticide on their feet and bodies and they spread the chemical all over every surface of the hive. The varroa can’t walk anywhere without being exposed to the chemical. But you need to wait for the varroa inside the brood cells (that’s where they reproduce) to emerge and die. That’s why it takes so long to be fully effective.
As a non-beekeeper, I can totally see why you're a fan of Apivar.

So I am a new beekeeper and have been following you since I started. I knew right off the bat that I need to stay tuned because even experienced beekeepers like you can lose it all in one year. That was a great learning experience for us all. I am also extremely interested in your innovative improvements on pastor Langstroth's design. I kind of wish you had done a few hive without the new design so we could track the differences (colony growth speed, honey production, did the larger frames really make that much difference to the bees, etc) but it has inspired me to probably build some similar hives as I also live in a colder environment. Anyway, specifically about this video, I appreciate the apivar weekly updates because I was afraid to use Apivar after reading the label. Haha! I actually threw the first package I bought away because I was afraid to use it on the bees. Thanks to your great videos, I have re-purchased Apivar and will be using it before winter sets in here (i have about a month left). I did use oxalic acid and have over a week of mite drop, but I like the Apivar continuous treatment concept. Thanks and keep the videos coming!

Mite destruction videos are the best! I've been using OAV every 5 days since August 28th on my colonies and have eradicated the vast majority of my mite problem (brood is still high so they persist) but considering the drops Ive had, I can safely estimate they will be far below 1% when I'm through treating this month. A couple hits when they are finally broodless next month should do it.... 🤞

So I have a question. I live in Nevada and we have bee keeping, though the africanized bees are prevalent here. Are the mites and viral problems the same with these hybrid bees as opposed to the European decended bees?

Looks like the treatment is working well. As a side note, those ants will carry of mites as a protein source.

I prefer Apivar in the spring and use something faster acting in the fall.

I have to admit that I have no idea what I am looking at. There are a lot of specks, but I can't tell the mites from any other debris that might have fallen from the hive. Can I please ask for a short idiot's guide to knowing what types of specks are what?
Try watching on a desktop computer in 4K. I did not do closeups because this is more of an update and not a lesson about varroa. There are some really great videos out there. Search for Varroa Mite Life Cycle.

Good progress on mite care so far. Really excited to see these hives emerge hail and hearty after the winter.
Screw them sticky boards. Do some washes. Lots of them .
I do washes. This is just an added visual. I'm not basing my mite management on inspection boards.
Aren't washes rather inaccurate? I'll bet you could do multiple washes on the same hive from different frames and get different counts each time. It is the best test we have at this time but it's not very accurate. Mites are hatching and going back into cells maybe not always uniformly kind of like when we get a flush of new bees from a good round of laying.

It might just be me, but I find it difficult to tell what is mite and what is just grime on the mite boards. I don't know how to make it better, maybe need it to be a bit closer? 🤷♀️
Watch on desktop, with Chrome, and you have the option for 4K. No problem seeing mites.

How's the temperature holding in the hives? I know one of the reason of removing the supers was to help regulate heat, did it work?
Temps are fluctuating with the outside temp pretty steadily. We’ve had a few nights in the 40s F and the hive sensors are hovering about 30°F above the outside. They may have localized warmer spots directly surrounding brood, but the sensors sitting on top of the frames are staying above 70F at night.
I love Apivar!! Next week is when I'm supposed to take mine out, and I see mites drop every single day.
Randy Oliver did a test on those strips and he used one that had been laying on the floorboard of his truck all summer and it was still effective in killing mites in his test.

Those little tiny ants are cleaning up the mite boards. Nothing to worry about.

I’m definitely going to try. It’s very disruptive so if we get a warm day in November, I may be able to open the hive and get a sample. It’s a really bad time to open a hive and pull out frames, but we do occasionally get a 60° day in November. I’ll do my best.
