So many amazingly beautiful scenes could be posters or pictures. Lily and Una running through the great hall, the unicorn lying dormant in the snow, Darkness leaning over Lily. And Tangerine Dream ... ok, we may have our preferences on movie scores, but the synths sound felt mystical, magical, truly fairly tail. I tried tried tried to get into it with the symphony score. It felt forced, routine, ... like a standard. I've seen this movie so many times, I recite the lines when watching ... "Mother Night, fold your dark arms about me", "Quiet. How like you my gifts my lady. Does the gown not please you?", "What have we here? A little BOY?". Great great stuff.

"Black as midnight, black as pitch. Blacker than the foulest witch!" It was a privilege to have been right on the verge of adolescence when I saw this film. Fantasy films like "The Dark Crystal" and "Legend" showed a grittier, darker side to the old-school Disney fairytales many of us grew up with. Gen X kids might have already discovered the glory of Tim Curry thanks to his time as Frankenfurter, but he absolutely owned every moment of screentime as Darkness. He even brought a serious sex appeal to the figure of the demon. He was scary as hell, literally, but also kind of tragic and romantic. I don't think I was the only adolescent girl imagining what it would have been like to dance around in the goth bride get-up that Lily ended up in. It's also dang easy to forget that THE Tom Cruise plays a role in this film. This film is a classic! I'd consider it a must-watch for anyone who appreciates twisted takes on fairytales.

I loved it as I understood it was paying homage to many European legends and fairytales which play a large role in literature from Shakespeare to Lord of the Rings. Ridley understood how this is part of what Europeans are and is deeply routed in our cultures and not just throwaway childhood tales.
I mean that Ridley understood this more than Disney fairytale which stripped out the darkness and fear of spirits and witchcraft and so forth that were very real things in our histories.

Just a small correction -- the Goldsmith score did not need to be "restored" into the 2002 Director's Cut. The Director's Cut already existed as a fully-edited print with a finished sound mix. The 2-track digital DAT (which had been preserved and archived by engineer Mike Ross-Trevor) was used to produced the 1992 *CD* release of Goldsmith's score. Otherwise, I enjoyed your excellent retrospective of this underrated and unique film.

SPEAKING ON THE VISUALS OF THESE MOVIE, THIS MOVIE WAS AHEAD OF IT'S TIME, I CAN ONLY IMAGINE WATCHING THIS MOVIE IN THEATERS IN 1985

LEGEND IS THE MOST UNDERRATED FANTASY MOVIE OF ALL TIME, IT IS NOW A ABSOLUTE CULT CLASSIC

The scene that introduces Tim Curry as Darkness (or the most perfect depiction of how the Devil was described), walking out of the fireplace - absolute terror! My mom was super religious - my grandmother, whose house I first saw the movie, was secular. Similar to how my mom told me my nightly sleep paralysis was demons trying to possess me, I genuinely believed it was the actual devil in the movie (I was only 8 years old in 1985).
Religious trauma sucks. Thank goodness I caught on before the oppressive anxiety at the time became worse than the crushing jpanic attacks I deal with now.

I'll have to watch it again. I was absolutely captivated in the theater watching this as a kid, and the amount of atmosphere it has is truly amazing.
There were several powerful fantasy films that came out in the 80s, and this ranks among the best.

I grew up with the American Tangerine Dreams version. Although I understand what Scott meant after watching the directors cut on DVD in 2002, I have too much of an emotional connection to the Dreams version. This film is like a recording of a primordial dream.

Grew up in the 80s and when I was kid, this movie freaked me out and I loved it. Basically, this was a young man/boy that saves the Princess and defeats evil. This was an old fairytale version of Star Wars and yes,Star Wars was a space fairytale .

I had no idea there was a director's cut of this classic. Also, that dubbing had happened, though it now explains why as a kid I thought things didn't sound right. Legend, Willow, Labyrinth, The Princess Bride - the 80s had gorgeous fantasy movies.

To this day, my favorite Tom Cruise movie. So much creativity and imagination... as a kid it really showed me that there is good and there is evil in the world.... and that you MUST take a side. If you don't, your just as bad as evil.
If you go deeper though, as an adult, it shows me that that darkness and light are not two sides of a coin, they are just the coin. There are no sides and that we all return to the source at the end.

I used to watch this and Top Gun back to back all the time when I was a kid. I normally HATE fantasy films (and the genre in general) but I still LOVE this movie. The original scripts are ridiculously wild compared to the finished film. A shame they never made a sequel, there's so much to this universe to explore, and Tom's star power wasn't even necessary cuz there's so many other characters they could've focused on.

Keith Richard's?? holy crap! as soon as that pic of his face from the early 80's was shown on screen I saw it. that's nuts. she did a great job.
and Meg Mucklebones was played by the same actor that played the Doctor in Star Trek: Voyager? crazy.

I grew up with the US theatrical release with the knowledge there was a longer international version out there. The one that played on US television in the late 80s was different than both. I have the directors cut and it's almost like watching a completely different movie, but I love it even more. The scenes that I knew word for word had different dialog. I love watching it a couple of times a year.

I've seen so many versions of this film. I remember there was one cut, TBS I think, that the opening scene script was narrated. There was also a part where Gump asked Jack a riddle, about blue bells, and Jack had to answer right or they wouldn't help him. That's not in there either. I wish they would put out that TBS cut because it was really good.

It's a great film, Ridley Scott is such a visionary it's definitely a more adult fantasy film. Tim Curry is a Legend himself for his performance alone. As is the FX and set designer's. I would've loved to have seen Ridley Scott direct a Bond film.

Imagine if this was made today, it would be just a mess of CGI effects. This film a masterpiece of costume/makeup. Tim's face is so well blended with the prosthetics, there just isn't anything quite like it in other films. Loved the soundtrack, Is your Love Strong Enough and Loved by the Sun were fantastic along with Tangerine Dream. It does seem odd that when I mention this film nobody seems to have heard of it.
