We are saddened to hear of MF Doom’s passing. He sampled our track ‘Funny Ways’ into this incredible song. RIP. -GG
🙏
More like Madlib sampled it but yes Doom was one of the greatest of all time
🙏🏾
Real recognize real, believe it or not I discovered MF Doom through Gentle Giant (one of my all time favorite artists) and was blown away by the pure ear candy production value within his music. Incredibly talented lyricist too, RIP
🙏🏾🙏🏾
You know its bad when a super villain tells you stop fighting..
Well DR. DOOM is not really all that evil.
A villain in your land, in his land a ruler..
His ways is strange
Hes just a villain to the system that has kept everybody in place
He's a villain for making us all heartbroken on New Years RIP MF DOOM
i actually listened to the lyrics for this for the first time.
the second verse was one of the most well written, poetic criticisms on the war in Iraq.
DOOM is the spirit of the universe
+LOSACI FROM DEATHSQUAD hey urmm i think the second verse was about the conflict in Israel/Palestine, but yes one of the best poetic criticisms!
***** it could be, however this track was made before that issue came to global light so unless DOOM actually is the spirit of the universe he may not have known about it. plus at the time when he made this the war in Iraq was finally being subjected to public scrutiny, possibly provoking DOOM making the verse. but i could be wrong
Oh that's really interesting, I didn't know sorry I just assumed it was Israel / Palestine
+LOSACI FROM DEATHSQUAD I guess the lyrics could go for the whole western politics and capitalism but it would be interesting to know which war he is referring too. and no that conflict was well known before 2004
+LOSACI FROM DEATHSQUAD To me the verse is more universal than just the Iraq war. Because the topic is timeless anv maybe even more relevant now, it's a genius piece of writing.
this song has an illegal amount of flow
bidness Yes
Doom is the supreme king of flow
A rather ugly brother with flows that's gorgeous
DOOOOM
Just how I like it
They pray four times a day, they pray five
Who ways is strange when it's time to survive
Some will go of they own free will to die
Others take them with you when they blow sky high
What's the difference? All you get is lost children
While the bosses sit up behind the desks
It cost billions to blast humans in half, into calves and arms
Only one side is allowed to have bombs
It's like making a soldier drop his weapon
Shooting him, and telling him to get to stepping
Obviously, they came to portion up his fortune
Sounds to me like that old robbery/extortion
One of the best anti-war songs ever. DOOM is a legend to me.
I scrolled to this at the exact moment he started the verse
Damn bone chilling lines to!!!
Peter Hardie No wonder he doesn't gets recognized in modern media.
I love doom.
It may not be much, but he's the best and i love him and respect him.
Holy shit that is such a good fucking verse
Same game, you can't reform them
Remember when they ran this and "ALL CAPS" on the same episode of boondocks?
Hell yeah
Yeah in Let's Nab Oprah.
sup Huey
Was just watchin that episode and heard the song and thought "shit that's doom". Never really heard of Doom when this show was airing.
what episode was it ? n what season
I wonder if MF DOOM goes grocery shopping with his mask on.
nah doubt it he probably have someone do it for him or he orders online he doesn't like being seen in public sometimes he have other people perform on the stage for him
bacon macon Yeah probably now that we have Peapod from Stop n Shop you never have to leave home for groceries.
most people dont know what he looks like without the mask so he doesnt have to hide his face
Remember all caps when you spell the man's name
no.. he just takes the mask off and no one knows who he is .. clever
Madlib x DOOM greatest duo of all time
freddie gibbs x madlib
Evidence x Alchemist
Stefan Burnett nah but they are dope together
TopFiveMoments Agree, then Guru x Preemo
Joejoe9O i would say qtip and phife
"Sounds to me... like that old robbery extortion.... same game... you can't reform 'em"
That whole second verse DOOM spits out, like Jesus, this might be over the top but I'm gonna go so far as to say that's one of the best verses in the history of hiphop.
man i can’t believe DOOM is gone bro
not over the top at all!
Hands down, the best song of an era
This and J-ivy’s verse on let you down are peak
This is one of the best examples of sampling I've ever heard.
Exactly
thats madlib for you. listen to his albums the unseen and yessir, whatever then you will see how this guy is the best hip hop producer of all time
what about dj premier ??
+Josh Johnson Primo is dope but I mean he only really does one style (90's boom bap). Madlib is way more eclectic. It's kind of like comparing a lake to an ocean..
That sample is "funny ways" by progressive rock band Gentle Giant.
Man...you can just tell these men love music. Sun Ra, Frank Zappa, Gentle Giant. (: Gotta Love.
Damn i never thought id see a Sun ra reference you mad deep in the crates homie respect
+FrankieStrings Not tryna shit on anybody recognizing or appreciating those greats, but madlib literally shouted out sun ra by name (and sampled him) on shadows of tomorrow. These references should be expected in a Madvillan comment section
@@secretcountry ok
I'm not really a rap fan. I'm only here because of the Gentle Giant sample but I like the way it was done. I think Kanye opened the flood gates to this kind of thing when he sampled King Crimson's "21st century schizoid man."
@@mikereiss4216 Not really. The Kanye song came out in 2010, this came out in 2004
First verse about the war on drugs and the second about the war on terror, perfect
@MAAHAQQ same game. cant reform em
first was mainly about police
They’re both about the war on drugs. In the second verse, he’s using real war metaphors to explain the consequences of the war on drugs!
@@pumpkingreg6673 who do you think the soldiers in the war on drugs are?
@@daledan-irabor3018 Second verse is also about the war on terror, "pray 4 times a day, they pray 5" is a reference to Jews and Muslims
"What's the difference, all you get is lost children.." Deep
His flow can never be copied.

One of the most underrated songs on the album RIP MF DOOM
It’s June 2020 and these lyrics are more relevant than ever
"All wars are fought for money."
~ Socrates
"Endless money forms the sinews of war."
-Marcus Tulius Cicero
thats far away from truth
People fight for principals, powers fight for profit.
Nope. Will To Power is what life is about.
No. all fought for the greater good in people's selfish perspectives.
I might be overrating here, but I can’t see anyone else in the hiphop game who came anywhere near DOOM’s level of creativity. Truly the GOAT
You were and will always be right, rest in power to the god of hiphop😔
Ey bruh earl sweatshirt is extremely creative I might argue that he’s even more creative than doom not to disrespect
@@tw12ve56 i feel like doom+madlib beats earl
@@tw12ve56 not even close, but earl sweatshirt does have 1 classic under his belt (some rap songs)
@@tw12ve56their both great lyricists in their own right, earls lyrics are more esoteric and personal while DOOM's is usually more satirical
Whos revisiting this album after he just passed?
This one and all the others, shoveling my way through the discography chronologically.
Rainer-Wilfried Kasuppke same
sure bro its one one of best hip hop album ever
This was the song that made me give the rap genre a chance, hearing that gentle giant sample and seeing that vinyl in the video. RIP to the greatest rapper I've ever heard.
They pray 4 times a day, they pray 5
Whose ways are strange when it's time to survive?
R.I.P. DOOM! I remember dis joint off from the Boondocks on Season 1. Been bumpin dis joint a lot! Can’t believe we end 2020 like this 🥺😭💔🤦🏽♂️
[Verse 1: MF DOOM]
Wreak havoc, beep beep it's mad traffic
Sleek and lavish people speaking leaking to the maverick
He see as just another felony drug arrest
Any day could be the one he pick the wrong thug to test
Slug through the vest, shot in the street
For pulling heat on a father whose baby's gotta eat
And when they get hungry, it ain't shit funny
Paid to interfere with how a brother get his money
Now, who's the real thugs, killers and gangsters?
Set the revolution, let the things bust and thank us
When the smoke clear, you can see the sky again
There will be the chopped off heads of Leviathan
[Interlude: Sample and MF DOOM]
My friend, they call 'em strangers
Anybody talk to him end up in some danger
"They stay...
Strange ways..."
Can't reform 'em
[Verse 2: MF DOOM]
They pray four times a day, they pray five

[Outro: Sample]
...that Mary was goin' around with an old flame
That burned me up, because I know he was just feeding her a line!
But the guy really spent his money like water
I think he was connected, so I left
Outside it was raining cats and dogs
I was feelin' mighty blue... and everything looked black
But I carried on!
gotta thank boondocks, first time I ever heard of doom was there man..lol im getting old
WordTheChill I found it on my own haha.
+HellaBeats same
Same just heard it today
All caps when you spell the man's damn name 😉
IM ONLY WATCHING THE BOONDOCKS NOW, THE IRAQ REFERENCES ARE GENIUS. HOPE U STILL DOING GOOD
That ending was dope as fuck
My friend
i dont think so, my friend...
This instrumental just instantly pulls you in. What a timeless album this is...
Try listening to the band where this sample was taken from.
Madlib😤💪
MF DOOM🕊💪
Aaron McGruder for throwing this gem on The Boondocks😎💪
Progressive rock is such a good choice to sample. I love gentle giant, and this is a great use of their music too
One of my favorite songs from this legendary villain DOOM. Such a deep one, love your music you fucking legend and Rest In POWER MF DOOM.
The amount of talent and effort on display here is staggering.
I'm not totally convinced doom isnt some kind of prophet, his words cut so clearly and concisely
Same game, cant reform em.
ua-cam.com/video/QaNytsIlg_g/v-deo.html
Love how madlib picks up the cover for gentle giants
Every month or so I come back to this video and watching for three or four times. Since MF Doom has passed away, his words sounds different to me. And when he says "my friend", it sounds like he's talking to me and to all of us but individually. Wherever you are, rest in peace my friend
Indeed.
Keep wailing at the sky my brother. Thanks for everything.
This song came to mind while watching what's going on in the Middle East right about now...
Gaza comes strongly to mind for me every time I listen to this shit
RIP MF DOOM 💔🕊
my first DOOM song. it was in the 4th grade at like 2am & i was watching boondocks, this shit played and i was immediately hooked. i hid the fact i liked doom until i read frank oceans ‘boys don’t cry’ magazine & realized i shouldn’t be ashamed of what i enjoy. may the villain rest.
never thought it would happen so soon, r.i.p DOOM
This track is one of the most gritty, poetic and intelligent critiques of societal and governmental issues I've ever heard. The philosophical implications in both verses are absolutely fucking brilliant, and that line about Leviathan is one of the dopest double entendres I've ever seen. DOOM is a mad genius. And that's not to take away from Madlib's amazing work here, this beat is fucking nuts. An absolute creative genius when it comes to sampling.
++++++++++
RIP #MFdoum it's sad ☹
🙏🤲🇩🇿🇩🇿🇩🇿
" The Best MC with no chain you ever heard "
This man is the only reason i’m still alive thank you DOOM rest easy
RIP MF DOOM One of my favorite in the album
"They pray 4 times a day, they pray 5- who ways is strange when it's time to survive?" Why, why, why is this track so short, DOOM needs to be at least 3 mins on this beat, my personal fav on Madvillainy...
they prey 5
Honestly, i hate the fact most of the songs on this album are under 2 minutes. Like look at Rhinestone Cowboy, its barely 3 minutes and it's one of the best DOOM songs to date.
I don't want this song to end
One of DOOM's most radical songs, and one of my favorites from All Caps.
You mean “from Madvillainy”?
"that's like a soldier drop his weapon, shoot'em and tell'um to get ta steppin'" get's me every time.
I love that DOOM pulls out the Gentle Giant record, he is so well-rounded. He's easily my favorite hip hop artist, no doubt
Rest in peace you Madvillain.
Just remember ALL CAPS when you say the man's name!
Holy fuck... Doom sampled GG - Funny Ways (song from my all time favorite album through high school).
I can finally sleep well at night!
Madlib actually sampled it just saying
Oh hell, I should know this... I do though I just kinda forgot. Thanks for clearing that up!
i love that gentle giant album.
RIP Metal faced villain.
🖤
My interpretation vs first police brutality, second verse is about Palestine /Israel or America and radical Muslims. Either way dope!
this is my favorite use of sampling that I've ever heard. madlib is a genius
Rest In Peace to the most villainous rapper to ever live
the fact this song is sub 2 minutes yet includes such dense storytelling and lyrics is once again proof that DOOM was and is one of the best of all times
MF Doom really had good taste in music. RIP legend
AW COME ON AT THE END OF THE YEAR
😭😭
It's crazy cuz apparently he died October 31st but his family and labeled didnt say anything
Set the revolution, let them thangs bust, and thank us
When the smoke clear, you can see the sky again
There will be the chopped off head of Leviathan
Leviathan is a demon also known as the collective consciousness of human kind. One of the most powerful lines in the whole album, tears me up.
@@blayasblay3941 It's a double entendre, Leviathan is also a symbol for the State from the political philosopher Hobbes
1:33 him walking away hits pretty damn hard.
His music was ahead of its time! I can really hear the influence his music had on Tyler, the Creator!
When the smoke clears and you can see the sky again, there will be the chopped off heads of Leviathan.
Genius.
Second verse feeling very relevant these days.
Literally came here to write this. Great minds think alike.
Endure through it all until the end bro. One love.
@@sumsumthinsumthin9481 same :(
I was feeling the same exact way fr, it’s kinda the reason why I’m visiting the comment section to see if people picked up on the same thing, or if this had to do with the conflict in the first place
@@Ilovejojosbizzarthat verse was about the iraq war but still relieved today
I swear half the reason I keep coming back to this video is just so I can watch DOOM walk out of the frame of the album cover at the end. Such a cool shot
Who else wants an MF doom and madlib action figures?
I wanna cop that shit.
+Mendez i'd rather have people's united understanding that war is never the answer and that innocent children die while the bosses just get richer, so that that would stop from happening, but to each his own i guess
P Y R U V I C A C I D I would rather have a sandwich
+Mendez I would love a figure and a sandwich, with ruffle chips stuffed in it.
+Cragmortis Orange juice on the side plz
+P Y R U V I C A C I D That's important too, just because we wanna cop the action figures dont mean we dont understand that.

Strange Ways,The Raid,And ALL CAPS🎯Best Boondocks Episode
Madlib has a sound that has a variety of lanes, his beats have a worldly sound
Definitely still ran in some strange ways is this country. Genius intellect!
The song that introduced me to MF DOOM...
The chopped off heads of leviathan, my friend! That second verse is simply incredible.
Ed Wuncler III: "Nobody move a goddamn muscle! You best start acting like a mannequin like you wanna stand in the way-" *shoots shotgun in the air* "AHHHHHHH!"
"Control over Oprah is control over women." "Wait, I see where you going. See, cuz, like control over women is control of *bitches*."
Awesome claymation and great MF DOOM !!!
RIP, will always be the best
RIP fam 🤜🏿 when I listen to your music I don’t like to think your gone I feel like your still here 😔
This is so ill it actually hurts me. I need to call my mom
My personal fav from the album. Great, great, great track.
I don’t really have anything to say, but I thought I should leave a mark on this masterpiece, no matter how late I am. What a poetic song, one of my faves alongside Fancy Clown and Raid. RIP MF DOOM, Viktor Vaughn, King Geedorah, and most importantly Daniel Dumile. 🫡
Rest In Power Mad Villain 🤴🏿

fave track on the album
Thank you Madlib and MF DOOM 🙏🏿

Madvillian, Madlib & MF DOOM
fucking incredible and timeless duo hands down!
No one cared who I was til I put on the mask.
it's funny because his motif is that he's an actual villain lmao
SO many classics but this was a Masterpiece!
This gives me chills like no other. Holy shit.
Thanks for all of the amazing bars, DOOM.
