That is some beautiful material right there, COL (cursed out loud) everytime a nice size flake broke in the center! I in fact sliced a really nice carnelian agate on my saw this evening, guess I should cook it huh? I bought an old copper colander a couple of years ago which was full of carnelian agates. They range in color from blood red to sunshine yellow. I would like to send you one, see what a master knapper can do with it.
Did you just cook the agate at 350° for 4 hours, or did you preheat it at all at a lower temperature? Got a turkey roaster for Christmas (whoo hoo) that will never see a turkey 😄 (unless its a turkey tail). Also, is there a good reference for what rocks to cook at what temperature? Love your videos. You should see how my knapping has improved since watching you!!!!
Preheat at 250 degrees for 24 hours. Then crank to 350. You can ramp up 50 degrees per hour if you like. Sometimes rock will blow up if you crank up the heat too fast. Glad to hear your knapping is improving.
I love your work. I have used aluminum flakers from tent pegs, work fine. never thought about melting down a bunch of cat food cans & pouring me a bopper. Hey, new project? Thanks for making me think.
I am hoping to heat treat some swan river chert soon i was able to find a 97 lb rock but it appears to be freeze cracked a bit and some glacial cracks as well hiping to get some nice usable material out of it. But we will see
@@thatsmallrockshop Sorry mate. I am in Perth WA and we have like ZERO chert / flint or anything good like that as far as my research thus far has shown me. When I saw your post re "Swan River Chert" - because the main MAJOR river through Perth here is the Swan River so when I saw your post I thought ... " OMG we have chert right here on my doorstep and I didn't know it" LOL. But alas, it seems not! Thanks though Chris for taking the time to reply. Cheers mate. Paul (in Perth WA)
@@PaulMotu no problem i could probably find you a source of knapple stone in your area. I will do some looking around. And get back to you if i find a spot where a person can collect knapple material near you.
@@thatsmallrockshop Sorry Chris, my mistake. I'm in Perth Western Australia so the other side of the world. BUT if you meant over here in Western Australia - then we've just become best friends :)
Man that’s beautiful stuff but looks hard to work, looks like it’s pretty crumbly. Is it from all the inclusions in it?? What is it?? I don’t know where you’re at but there’s a knap-in in Letchwirth NY in the end of August.
I'm in Texas, and this agate has lots of issues: freeze cracks, voids, heat fractures (crazing), and general brittleness. I can't remember where I got it. It was sent to me to see what I could do with it... hehehe
JackCrafty oh man sorry, you got your hands full. I’ve been watchin you stuff for some time. Just subscribed. Have to do that on my phone because I don’t have a keyboard set up for the tv. Really enjoy watchin you work your magic!! Keep rockin!!✌🏻
Beautiful Patrick. Thanks for sharing.
Your dog just made my dog bark!! LOL I love your work man! Thanks for the videos :)
My dogs make my dogs bark too (when I review the videos...haha).
I like how you got the outer stuff off and when you got more to the center it became more glossy and less inclusions, seemed to be much more stable.
Yeah, the center of this stone is pretty good, luckily.
I never found points of agate and heat treated. s. tx.

Carnelian is beautiful stuff. I would love to try some of yours but I'm not taking on any more rock challenges until I get caught up. :-)

@@KnapperJackCrafty indeed. Knapped a couple Glass points last night and posted em.
I’m jealous, I wish I hade some nice waxy looking materials are agates 😕
It looks better than it knaps.
O well that’s a shame
Why were you 'saving' some flakes and letting some others go on the floor? Are some of those thin small flakes useful for something else later?
Yes. I'm going to try to make arrowheads from the ones I saved. The ones on the floor have too many cracks and other bad spots.
Is it overheated a little?
Yeah, it might be.
