  • Those are the modifications I've made so far to my DBX 166:
    PSU MoD: - Replace c3 ,c4, c7, and c8 with 1000uf-2200uf 35v caps
    - Replace c5 and c9 with a .1uf film cap (preferably polypropelene)
    - Bypass c6 and c10 with .1uf film caps
    Channel 1:
IC MoD: - Replace chip OA1 with better ic (NE5532,)
    - Repalce chip OA2 with better ic ( OPA134)
    - Replace the VCA IC1 with a THAT 2180AL08-U (lift pin 4, pin 4 should not connect to anything)
    - Add a 47pf NPO ceramic cap from pin 3 of OA2 to ground (Suggested by Jim Williams)

I can clearly hear that the modified channel sounds much more clear. I would say I preferer it over the original. Nice mod!

original hits different the lower end, it looks that it would have somelike a lowpass filter in the control signal idk, while the modded sound more flat and has more definition, but it makes it less thick.
maybe the caps change? or the response of more modern ic's?

Thank you for the demonstration. For those who find the gate a bit slack on the attack. You can reduce the value of R79 and R179 resistors from 1K to 380ohm. I know it's possible to use a small 1K pot with a 100 ohm serie resistor to implement an external attack control... I went the resistor way and It works very well on percussive grooves and to clean noisy spoken poetry mic tracks. I also adjusted the R63 and R163 trimmer to set the depth of the gate to -15db for a less aggressive gating... A 50k pot on the front can replace the trimmer for external control... I'm a bit of a fetichist.. I chose not to destroy the face of my 166 and did all the mods on the inside ;-)
(I've just tried the modified gate on your video sound samples. And it sounded great.)

you need to play the same section a|b to be able to hear what is going on play 2 different tracks makes it tough to hear the difference.

Really nice sounding mod! Which OP amps, VCAs and PSU caps are you using for your mod?
