Back in 2000 & 2001, I was working in a used bookstore. One of my co-workers was really into Harry Crews and was in the process of reading everything he'd ever written. Somehow, he got hold of Crews' phone number and called him a number of times. Whenever he told me that he had talked to Crews the evening before, I'd ask him what Crews had to say. The only things my co-worker would tell were things along the lines of Crews saying, "Man, I wish I could find someone who'd give me a ride to the drugstore."
oh.....awesome...im sooo happy.....SMILE: PET SOUNDS with your bathing buddy Bradfield, ...a great title....i am so happy that you are celebrating Crews...arguably the greatest southern american writer post WWII, and he is a personal hero of mine...and A CHILDHOOD, should be read by everyone, definitely every writer and serious reader...for me, the finest american memoir i know....i loved A Feast of Snakes (who doesnt), Gospel Singers, The Body, Scar, the Enthursiast and the Hawk is Dying...genius, all....anyway, so so happy...please do a vid o n A Memoir...as for Cosby, he is a fine, damn fine, North Carolina writer whose genre is 'thriller' but that is deceptive, he is one of the best north carolina writers about the african american experience i know...a fabulous writer, please read--perfect bathroom books especially razorblade tears and blacktop wasteland....anyway, well lastly, i did THE ABSOLUTELY USELESS THING of reviewing ALL your video dates Bradfield, and guess what, you'be been at this for 11, yes 11, years hahahah...and i felt like watching benjamin button as you aged in reverse....anyway, sending all from the north....be safe and happy...here is to 5000 bathtubs buddies to help look for Bradfield's glasses...biggest of hugs to all...bb
I went on a Crews binge last year, hitting six or seven of his books in a row. He’s lots of fun, but I think he recycled his own material way too often - if you’ve read one, you’ve read them all. I probably read the sentence “He hustled his balls” 100 times throughout those couple books haha.
Please don't wait seven more years to do another Harry Crews. Try "The Hawk Is Dying" is a good one to try. I Love Crews and have several of his early books inscribed and I treasure them to this day!
Recently finished the Penguin edition of A Childhood - one of those rare books I wish was longer. Just incredible.
it is a magnificcent book...the finest memoir i know.....so happy to hear...bb
Pretty powerful book, even wilder happenings than in his novels! s
