They still do this competition in Superior, Arizona every year. Drilling, spike driving, timber sawing, and hand mucking are the events. There is a copper mine close by.
It's most likely a gardner denver S-90. It;s a 90 lb jackleg drill plus a telescopic or double telescopic leg. The handle has a part you turn like a motorcycle throttle that allows the leg to go up and down. That in turn keeps the correct angle on the drill as it goes in to the hole and further from the base of the leg. It keeps the hole straight in other words and the drill bit from pinching. Also it allows you to raise the drill high and start a horizontal hole near the ceiling or the floor.
Ive been doing this for 10years now and ya, buddy is drilling inefficiently energy wise but it’s just for a few minutes so ill give him a pass. In the field I doubt he drills like this.

I see nothing wrong with how he was running the drill. and i never used gloves and my hand were never messed up. but i had rock like calluses. my last job was as a mine superentendent. and have done jack leg competitions in Tonopah, Nevada Randsburg and Alleghany calif
@devdalling9876 The statistics are not a secret..... Anyone can look them up. Fishing & logging tie most years, then it goes back and forth between the two for most deadly. Overall, logging is considered the most dangerous occupation. I've been doing it for 15 years, I know what I'm talking about. Mining isn't even 3rd or 4th place ...

More than likely it is a Gardner Denver 83. That was the preferred drill when I mined in that area.
