Having a russian watch is a must for any kind of cold war fanatic, preferably a soviet one if you're brave enough to go vintage. I've got a raketa, it was very cheap, but it always sends a little shiver up my spine to read "made in USSR" on the dial
...what a nice review! Guess I have to buy the James Bond novel now! Impressed by the video - always great to see these watches from a second sight / go on with your videos... Greetings from Munich
Tim, another excellent session. I must admit (and please, no offence intended), when I first stumbled across your site, I thought, "who is this Bond villain doing watch reviews?" My curiosity got the better of me and truly, I am the better for it. But it did make me chuckle when you produced that book. Cheers
Very interesting video. Will check out the book. I also love the Seiko desk clock. I like the Poljot. A conversation piece and interesting about the movement. Seems great value at the price, for something unusual, with a useful complication.
If you want to buy you will do. To be unsure about it shows, you don't really want, even if it is a fine watch like this. (A bit crazy, we are both German and communicate in English language 😄 )
Got me a related one, there is a way more beautiful older piece from the 80ies that i so crave. I am slightly versed in the russian watchworld around Poljot, Sekonda, Strela and the likes. And they are my watchmaking pieces. The Poljot Alarm, the AS1475 clone, i hope i can assemble it blind by now. Kidding. But i got me 50 movements in various states for 75$ on - yes ya wont believe it - on etsy.
The advantage of mineral glass is that it does not distort or reflect, so no anti-reflection coating is necessary. I prefer it, although I almost never scratch even plastic crystals. If I used a chain saw in my work, I'd want sapphire.
Scott makes a good point. I have owned an Omega Speedmaster Mk II. It had a mineral crystal. I never had any problems. Seiko have used their Hardex crystal for years, and still do. This is a type of mineral crystal. CWC on their issued SBS watches used (past tense) mineral crystal for decades. I had a Fortis Flieger with a mineral crystal. I was sleeping on a folding sofa bed and, having taken off the watch before I slept, put it on the arm of the sofa. In the morning, having forgotten about the watch, I folded the bed away. It was then that I heard a crack. The watch had slipped down the side of the arm into the workings of the folding bed. A sapphire crystal, I am sure, would have shattered under the impact of the folding mechanism. As it was, the Fortis only had a small crack and kept, I found out later, its water resistance. This is why military watches tended to use mineral glass crystals. So give mineral crystals a break Tim😊
Your content is quite straight forward, sporting this interview-esque style and hands-on view angles. I LIKE IT! Don't ever fucking change, Tim! If you're having trouble monetizing your videos, try making a Patreon profile.
I think price is attractive. Mineral glass is something that I mentioned as drawback already when Junghans was discussed. However it does have SOME advantages. First one is that it's more resistant against shattering than sapphire. Second one is that it's easy to polish smaller and average scratches so it looks like new.
@@neilpiper9889 You can see dozens of videos where people are testing it on youtube. They even scratch on purpose and it's quite easy to polish. It's hard to polish sapphire (but not impossible)
I have a version of this watch, called the "Civil Chronograph". It has the same case and case back, the same movement, but different dial markings and the inner rotating bezel is simply marked with the numerals 1 through 12, rather than cities of the world. I wish I had seen this world time version first, I prefer it to mine. One thing that really bothers me about mine , also, is the the chronograph seconds hand does not line up perfectly at 12:00... it is off a little to the left. I really like the watch, but this visual flaw drives me crazy. At least on mine, the bezel moves perfectly smoothy, very fluid, no noise in either direction.
Hey Tim, nice review. On whether or not you should buy it, I would consider two things. Basically. One, price. Yes it is very cheap for a mechanical chronograph but right off the bat you are investing in a new strap and crystal? Basically you making it a different watch. If you add a hundred euros to the price then it might not seem like such a good deal. Two, water resistance. If I am going to have a watch that is a world timer then we are assuming that I am going to be traveling with it. And if I am going to be traveling with it, it's got to be water resistant to an acceptable level. Water resistance standard for any tool watch is 200 meters. In my opinion this is less a tool watch than it is a dress chronograph. Anyway, I wouldn't buy it. I think there are better options for the money.
Do they ship to America? I would buy it! I'm thinking about buying it right now! I think it's great , I love those teeth like indices , I love the bi compax layout and I love that it has a discontinued movement .. it seems like it's very well put together and you did an excellent job reviewing it !! I mean for that amount of money I don't know aside from the seagull 1963 which doesn't have any of the other features and is only $150 less!!! Tim you've created quite a conundrum for me 🤔
I love Crystal because of the clarity of the crystal but I started to look at it a little bit different I was on my way out one day in a hurry I whack my watch in just the angle against the corner of the hallway even though it should have withstood that hit I was surprised that it's fractured on the very Outer Edge I was very upset I had it in my mind that Crystal was indestructible but I'm very careful now I do have some watches in Mineral glass it is more durable but it does and can scuff but they're easily polished out
Óptima revisão, tenho um Poljot da revisão, que curiosamente comprei ao mesmo vendedor, simplesmente espetacular tanto o vendedor como o relógio, um cronógrafo mecânico original. Muitos parabéns.
Stay away, Tim.... it’s not worth it... btw, do you always play with a pic? Regards, fellow guitarist, classically trained... keep up the great work, jazz head.. jazz head in all the positive meaning of jazz. Love it...
Nice piece - if it doesn't stretch your budget and you enjoy it then go for it - you can always flip it later. How about since you maybe develop taste for a soviet era watch and I see you wearing waistcoats buy a vintage pocket Molnija with simple 3602 calibre (no complications there I'm afraid but same story with movement and machines that came from Switzerland) ;-)
The wood of the seiko looks very much like mahogany (Mahagoni), varnished in satin finish clear coat. source: am cabinet maker. nevertheless, it's a nice piece. greetings from aachen
good vid. Interesting to hear you are still enjoying TGV, I've been soured a little on him given the recent plagiarism revelations. You may not want to go into this but given you are a journalist (as am I), I think your views on the subject would be interesting to hear...
I think people right now are a little bit too picky. UA-camrs make mistakes. I personally don‘t see any sort of planned violations there. Maybe he‘s just overwhelmed with the situation.
1990 I was in Moscow and swapped three Swatches for a Poljot with a Colonel. Still got it. Great times, great memories.

At that cost and style, it’s a no brainer Tim - snap it up! 🤓

With Soviet clock you no tell time, time tells YOU!
I'm dead 😂

"Poljot" is Flight In Russian
That's a good point about acrylic versus sapphire. Mineral glass is maybe the worst option. I hadn't thought of it that way.
TGV and Federico both have the same clock. I also have that clock, but I bought mine back in the 90s.

I know Julian he is an extraordinary guy! A super kind gentleman, make business with him . You will not be dissapointed at all
I would call it a “Cardboard Sleeve “ . Thank you for all you’re work much appreciated .
Thanks for watching!

Thanks for this video. Will definitely check out the Russian watch sellers website and seriously considering this watch.

Very difficult to polish mineral glass

Excellent review brother. Very interesting thanks. 🥃🥃🥃

Buy this wonderful russian Watch. Julian Kampman is a good Dealer. I bought two watches. One Strela Cronograph and a Seagull 1963

Obrigado!
Tim, how is your Landeron, are you satisfied with that?
I guess the Landeron was eaten by a stingray
Still happy with it. 👍
Buy the Poljot,they're great watches.
Stay away, Tim.... it’s not worth it... btw, do you always play with a pic? Regards, fellow guitarist, classically trained... keep up the great work, jazz head.. jazz head in all the positive meaning of jazz. Love it...
Yes always with picks.
So, yes, buy the watch, and when (if) you actually scratch the crystal, have it replaced with a sapphire.
My bet is you won't scratch the crystal.

More Cold War watches please?
would have been more interesting if you spoke about the history of the watch brand for those of us who don't know a lot about the brand
James, you're right, I've kept that too short. I keep it in mind for future episodes.
Great video!
smidgen over the market price haha
that will be a classic

Nice !!! Wish I have one of these
How much was it? Did you bought it?

The desk world clock is a "Bondish" clock, and the Poljot's serial number is 007. Ironic.

11:08 Bond inspired video, the Poljot is number 007 and he doesn't notice.....
I‘m in good company. Nobody noticed it for years. So thanks for the addition!
@@CasebackWatches Photographer, I tend to notice the details. How did those shoepassions work out for you btw? I had some trouble with mine.
does it have anti reflective crystal?
I don‘t think so.
interesting channel :)
Oh yes, it's very evil Tim. ;-)
Wow, never been so early
Flat Earth map! I love it!! It’s also the United Nations map.
I like it . Buy it . Or buy a Hamilton field watch in 38 mm .
I forgot you had or have the seagull 1963 . That is a great watch also .
Absolutely. One of the few keepers of the last months.

Buy two and ship me one...LoL
Nice watch. Do not buy it.
