When the disguised Odysseus returns home, only his dog recognizes him. Paul gets back, caked in plaster of paris, nobody even bats an eye as he sits down to screen. Hello, Paul
Agreed, this film was definitely ahead of its time. I saw it for the first time around 1987 when I was in college… Among my friends it was a pretty big cult favorite. Just recently bought it on DVD after not having seen it for many years… It still holds up. Definitely see it if you have not. It has a definitive feeling to it and agreed, again, that I can see the connection to the Cohen Bros.… Love their films as well. I’ve never put that together but yes I can see it.
I lost count of the number of times I recommended this masterpiece to my friends, but none of them ever watch it because they don't like the idea of a non gangster Scorsese film.
The "Joe Minion" mystery (as to why he never bested After Hours) might have to do with the fact that he plagiarized significant parts of it. You can look it up. 😉
One of my all time favorite films. In the diner, Paul is reading Tropic of Cancer by Henry Miller, and I had to go read that right away. And in a way I can't explain, the movie made a little more sense😅
"Art sure is ugly man" ... Loved your work, i watched it a few months back and been gushing about it ever since, i also agree with the comparisons... I guess i should stop putting it off and finally see ur films, keep working i enjoy your videos immensely ♥️♥️

Nicely done review *Thanks* For decades recommended "After Hours", no reactions. Now finally there's a gackle :) of reviews. Like your showing the black & white pattern on the pillow and eslewhere. Combined with Kubrick's red color kinda ties the movies together somehow. Around the middle 80s some good movies with a dark comedy theme came out similiar to "After Hours", John Demme's "Something Wild", Vincent Ward's "The Navigator", even Alex Proyas' 1998 "Dark City"*. Alex Dagur's 2009 "The Good Heart" has that black & white film noir feel. * when the main character asks the detective "... ever notice its always dark here ... " thought that was a humorous jab at the film itself (especially since it influenced the Matrix series).
Was just gonna say the same. Vampire's kiss is a way better movie than After Hours imho. A great critique of corporate psychopathy akin to but somehow even more absurd than american psycho. Cage's performance is very meticulously crafted as a love letter to german expressionism. Every time I watch the movie I find a different detail to love. Knowing they are from the same author made me want to watch after hours again
The music the acting the photography the editing the themes. It's just a quality film in general. Lynch's films just look bad. Again, not Eraserhead. I really like it. It feels like an art film. It's just his later work...
@@FallopiumFilms I respect that but twin peaks is such a beautiful piece. I think it really captures the love of things and the perversion of its extremes. And in the return, the pursuit of nostalgia reopening wounds. It’s so human and that gives it beauty. Especially Fire Walk With Me. At the end art is subjective but like you should give it another look bc it’s his best work in my opinion.
Great review, but what you need to understand is that you're not giving anything away. EVERYONE knows the plot of the film and most of us have seen it.
I kept not watching this because I thought you were going to talk about Boxcar Bertha, listen I know it sounds dumb, after hours I just brushed off as a segment you did
Other than Kubrick, this movie also feels very David Lynch imo. I agree with your great analysis. This is one of my favorite "non-gangster" Scorsese films. 👍😎🍻
Why do people like this film? It's average at best. I've seen it twice and it's still no better than a mildly amusing comedy. And as for an ''art film''. Give me a break!

Hello, Paul
After Hours and The King of Comedy are up there with the best of Scorsese's work as far as I'm concerned.
To me "After hours" is a mix of "the tenant", ''Possession'' and "blow up" and if you liked "After hours", then you'll probably like them too.
Thank you for this. I will be watching
I liked all those films, but hated After Hours. The Tenant is NOTHING like this!!
A genius insight. Thank you and thoroughly agree
It's the Odyssey
Queen hater here writes rudely hateful comments on other After Hours video essays as well. Who cares if you hated this incredibly unique masterpiece?!
I watched yesterday and the feeling of the movie reminds me a lot of Eyes Wide Shout, so Im glad you mention Kubrick
You just gave voice to a notion that I couldn't put my finger on. Thank you! I agree.
this Film totally reminds me of Eyes Wide Shut too!
Yes yes yes. The streets and the colours and the repression.

It reminds of the Big Lebowski, even though I have never seen it.

I love watching this movie with new people.
Yes! I love your comparison of the dialogue to the Coens!
Great video essay. Deserves more views.

I’ve never read it. I’ll have to add it to my list
3:24 - Scorsese shines a light. 'Shine a Light' is the title of Martin Scorsese's 2008 Rolling Stones documentary.
After Hours is a movie I can watch over and over, and it is amazingly artistic
No

I mean... they are youtube films made with no money lol. So go easy on me.
I also am a wannabe filmmaker, so i knowww ♥️♥️

I'm offended you felt you had to tell me where these were from. The instrumental last half of this song has defined most of my music life

The best movie ever
You do realize that Vampire's Kiss is beloved unironnicaly, right?
I guess I do now

Great discussion. I'm obzessed with this movie. Best NYC movie.
Love all the crazy characters in this movie.
Gotta watch this again
It’s unique, I’ve watched it a couple of times
Thank you, mummy dearest
The other title of this movie is Don’t Go looking for Booty In Soho
I love after hours!
I mean after hours is my fav Scorsese movie, but how can u like after hours and hate lynch (literal tears man).
But like props cause I’m abt to watch the movie
Cause like the video essay made me watch it again. 🙏 thanks.
OMG AND THAT EYES WIDE SHUT CONNECTION WAS SOMETHING THAT IVE BEEN THINKING FOR SOOO LONG THANK UUU.

Speaking of cameos, Scorcese's mother is clearly visible in the restaurant scene between Dunne and Arquette.
That's his Mother AND Father both in the scene.
2:56 similarity: mystery
6:23 soundtrack
Dude I saw this film 20 years ago maybe more. It's the type of film I make and have made. :D
In my top 5, has been since about 1997
After Hours is so, so amazing. The soundtrack is underrated and makes the film.
It isn't that great. Seen it twice now and it doesn't improve.
love your passionate voice :)
Great essay and i love After Hours too, are there any movies you would recommend that has similar atmosphere to this film ?
Check out Beau Is Afraid by Ari Aster, it's like After Hours on a very bad LCD trip 👍🏼
Been enjoying some of your picks, I think you'd like The Patriot on Prime
what is the checkered pattern a symbol for?
Scorsese is a great director, not just a good one.
False. He’s both.
The best imo.
This movie invented the manic pixie dream girl
False.
Love it.
Vampire's Kiss is great.
Brilliant. I have always loved this film.
Whatever that means. But one things for sure.
Great review, but what you need to understand is that you're not giving anything away. EVERYONE knows the plot of the film and most of us have seen it.
It’s no goodfellas but it’s v good even if you don’t watch art films it’s funny asf
not here for the Vampires Kiss hate 😠
great video otherwise
You know… maybe you’re right. I should give the old vamp kiss another try
I kept not watching this because I thought you were going to talk about Boxcar Bertha, listen I know it sounds dumb, after hours I just brushed off as a segment you did
IT is one of the most overrated movie ever.

See my original film Tardy. Please. Please?
@@FallopiumFilms I will, thank you 👍✌

Art can be many things, why wouldn't this film be exactly that?
I don't think you understand the movie
