    Notice how he says "you" and Anna says "and I". Therefore he is talking about Anna and Anna is talking about herself.

      Yep, I think so as well. Hans manipulating everyone can clearly be seen. But him mirroring them - it could be a metaphor for the mirror of the original tale, even though it might not be intended.
      The scene where Hans sees himself in the window should be compared to Elsa looking outside a window earlier in the movie. It is even the same camera angle. Elsa sees her kingdom, while Hans sees only himself because he is selfish.

    In psychology, we learn that if you want to gain somebody's affection or merely want someone to like you - you should mirror what they do. People like other people who are a reflection of themselves. Hans was trying to gain affection from everybody in Arendelle so that if his plan to be king follows through, the town would be okay with it because of his "likeable" personality.

    • @lifeisbutadreamm
      @lifeisbutadreamm 7 років тому +44

      Mollie Ann Also in psychology, the mirroring, lack of empathy, and many of Hans other traits, like repeating what others have said to him to gain trust or show "empathy", or even gaslighting Anna as she's slowly freezing to death, telling her she's no match for Elsa, and "if only someone loved you", shows him to have NPD (narcissistic personality disorder)..

      alguien1234 Same. I've thought that me "mirroring others" is because I'm simply easily influenced with other people's mood. I kinda think sometimes as well that I'm being fake or what, but I'm not sure. 😂

      Mirroring is a behavior, and as with most behaviors it can be used for both good and ill purposes. I personally will mirror my friends so that I can better understand what they're feeling, help them feel more comfortable and give them a safe place to open up about things that are stressing or troubling them. It all depends on whether the one doing the mirroring is using it to selfishly manipulate (Hanz) or to genuinely help those they mirror.

  • @shanryder
    @shanryder 8 років тому +644

    You missed a pretty big reflection. Also in the fairy tale, one of the shards ended up in the character's heart. At first glance, we would all probably assume that Frozen's reference to this is when Elsa fires her ice magic into Anna's heart... twice in fact. But if Han's is actually the Mirror in the story that means that he would have to find a way... wait for it... into Anna's heart! Which is exactly what he did.

      +dimapez I wouldn't say we're dumb, more lazy as some of us can't be bothered to put them in in writing because we don't use them ourselves, and we aren't taught that alphabet unless we choose to do it in our own time and a lot of us are too lazy or don't care enough to do that. In terms of pronounciation, yes, we don't get how to say them unless we've been taught it, but that's the same with every language. I also think that that alphabet isn't superior, just different. But that's my opinion!

      neji eye no, he took off the gloves. In plays and writing, gloves are often used to show somebody is hiding their true selves or keeping a big secret. In frozen, the only characters wearing gloves are Hans and Elsa. Elsa takes off her gloves during let it go, symbolizing she no longer fears what people think of her secret and "letting it go". Hans most likely wore the gloves to show he was plotting something and hiding his true colors. In the scene where he was talking about how he is gonna kill Anna and stuff he casually pulls off his gloves, revealing his plan and showing his true colors.

      No, Hans is not a mirror, like in the room, he wasn't mirroring anybody, he was reflecting his true plan, he was going to betray them, he just needed the right time to do it. If he was really a mirror 🪞, he wouldn't have shattered into millions of pieces when Anna punches him and knocks into the ocean. In he was frozen fever 🤒, he was shoving horse 🐎 poop 💩, and when the snowball, he didn't shatter into pieces. Also, we get more of his backstory in frozen heart ❤️. So, is Hans a mirror 🪞 ? No 👎, he is just a really great manipulator.

  • @mwroach1251
    @mwroach1251 8 років тому +280

    This is a very interesting theory. I have my own, too.
    I think the rock trolls are the ones responsible for turning Hans against Anna (and vice versa), through a magic spell.
    Anna and Kristoff bearly tolerated each other until the trolls decided they should be together and sang the Fixer Upper song. Immediately after that song (or rather, during it) Anna and Kristoff suddenly had these feelings for each other that weren't there before. I think the song was a spell.
    This spell took effect for Hans when he tried to break Elsa's spell and melt Anna's heart; then all of a sudden, this guy who was genuinely interested in Anna from the moment they met; suddenly becomes a heartless jerk as soon as he tries to kiss her. The trolls' spell took effect from that point, turning him into something dark and ugly that Anna would understandably lose interest in. I think that the troll's spell broke when Elsa figured out how to melt everything.
    Maybe it's just me, but by this point and the end of the movie, Hans seems...confused, to say the least. Like he didn't remember what happened or why he was even in Arrendale in the first place.
    I don't think the rock trolls are evil, mind you. I just think they were trying to help Kristoff get a girl.

    The Snow Queen "wasn't entertaining?!?" Okay, sure Frozen is more fun, but the original story has incredible beauty and spiritual depth, rich symbolism and imagery that doesn't make it into the movie.
    However, your theory about Hans is brilliant. It is said that narcissists have no personality of their own, and mirror back the people around them because they don't understand the give-and-take of true human communication. Sometimes it seems like they can read minds - really they are only predators with a remarkable ability to hone in on the weaknesses of others. Now I can see Hans is a narcissist, and therefore a much more frightening and realistic villain than Elsa at her most unhinged ever could be.
    P.S. That wasn't a troll in the original story, but literally the Devil. H.C. Andersen was a devout Christian, and spiritual warfare is a theme in some of his work, particularly this and the original Little Mermaid.

    • @StephenHutchison
      @StephenHutchison 6 років тому +18

      Please try not to dehumanize narcissists too much. They're people. They're badly broken people who can't actually empathize. One of the most telling analyses of narcissism says that because of the broken "mirror" -- an inability to exercise the human trait of true empathy, an accurate emotional reflection of the people around them -- the narcissist is unable to believe in anything like love. They suspect that it's a lie, like any other sophisticated emotion. They can't believe that they are innately worthy of being cared for, there must be some sort of self-serving motive whenever someone else does this "love" script ... and they learn to mimic the script, the behavior, but not the motivation, so they can drop it whenever it stops being convenient.
      Narcissists DO have personalities -- but they're crippled. This doesn't mean one should allow them to hurt oneself or other people with their brokenness, because that way lies much lasting harm, but they don't CHOOSE to be like they are, and shouldn't be hated for being so.
      Not everybody who has narcissistic traits is as badly broken as everyone else. And, there are other things that mimic narcissism but aren't. Some cases of dissociative identity look a LOT like narcissism, but it's not that empathy is broken in these cases, it's that the broken continuity of self, the suppression of memory and emotion associated with severe trauma, that results in apparent narcissism, and can have the same kind of unhappy effects.
      And it's really bad when someone has both. And by "bad" I mean "tragic."

    • @christianali5431
      @christianali5431 5 років тому +3

      I don’t know if he was the kind of Christian that we have today. His father had a very Bohemian type of spirituality, and it was him that taught Hans about the concept of everything having an inner life and personality of it’s own [which accounts for all the fairytales Hans Christian Andersen wrote about moving objects, like “the hardy tin soldier,“ Or “the snowman.“]Not to say he wasn’t a Christian, just saying that the jury is still out on how religious he was in his private life.

    It's called sociopath, people who do in fact mirror the emotions of others because they have no empathy or feelings of their own. I LOVE THIS THEORY and I think it makes so much sense and brings this entire movie back into focus. I always thought Hans was something of a pointless wild card; like they had to replace the Snow Queen (who was going to be a villain!) with something else. But this makes WAY more sense!
    Also for a really good version of the Snow Queen's original tale, check out Fairy Tale Theatre. It's actually not that bad. lol

      ***** If a sociopath is really that, then I'm a sociopath, because I have high functioning autism and lack empathy outward. To put it as I understand the word; a sociopath doesn't understand emotion, but can replicate it if they need to, but they understand moral concepts and norms. A psychopath is less likely to stick to those things, though. But both sociopaths and psychopaths can live mostly normal lives.
      I'm definitely not an expert, though. I've always been interested in things like sociology and psychology, however. ^-^

    • @jessefolding3564
      @jessefolding3564 8 років тому +3

      The difference between sociopaths and psychopaths is this: a sociopath cannot feel emotion regardless of circumstance. A psychopath can feel emotion, but cannot feel empathy, meaning that he does not share the emotions of others, only understands them.
      Of course either personality disorder can be mild or severe. Hans would be on the severe side of psychopathy given his pathological lying and inability to behave as his own person around others.
      The Degloving in that scene with Anna is beautiful in a twisted way; he's finally discovering how to be his own person. Now if only he could turn it around so that he's not just hurting everyone....

      @MrMarinus18 6 років тому +1

      Yeah, I think Lion King is actually closer to Hamlet as even though it is quite different it does mimic the most important scene's pretty well. Speaking of Lion King one scene in it that nobody talks about that I love is just before the ending with Sarabi. Just how the land is desolate, she is surrounded by savage brutes, the pride she loves is miserable and she knows she is going to be blamed for everything she still is a queen. Even after all of that she maintains her dignity, grace and aura of authority. She is honest to scar even though she knows he's unstable and will just get angry. The only time she loses her composure is when Scar says he accepts the fact that the pride will starve and he will just let it happen.
      It's only a 2 minute scene but I really wish we would get more of that. Of Sarabi being an indomitable, beautiful and powerful authority who has an unbending and absolute devotion to the pride and it's well being. Another thing that they actually did make but was cut was Scar trying to seduce Nala in a very creepy way. That is what causes her to run away and live on her own which is what ultimately get's her to the jungle where she meets Simba. They cut that because the thought that a man in his late 40's trying to seduce a 19 year old was too far and would get them an R rating. They also just felt that with Nala's innocence that people would find it far too disturbing.

      Ben's theory's still true though but you're also right.
      I'll explain how both of your theories are true.
      The scene started with blahblahblah Kristoff gave Anna in, Anna saw Hans and says kiss me to Hans and there. Hans reflected Anna (It started when she said to "Kiss Me" Hans look so scared and got worried because Anna was scared and worried that she'll not make it.) and Anna wants to save herself by doing the act of true love in a form of a true love's kiss. The reason (according to my theory, correct me if you think there's a better explanation) that Hans stopped the kiss and almost touched Anna's lips is because of Anna's Frozen-Heart. She's starting to lose hope and couldn't remember what love feels like anymore (Olaf Anna Scene).
      The only line that Hans said after he almost kissed Anna was, "Oh Anna. If only there's someone out there who loved you." Because of Anna's Frozen Heart, Hans said this line. Wonder why... hmmm... maybe she thought of Kristoff...
      It makes sense. "There's SOMEONE OUT THERE who LOVED you" (Olaf Anna Scene and Kristoff coming back to save Anna because he realised that he loves her.)
      That's it and he walks to the window to close the curtains but before that, he saw his reflection and he showed his true self to Anna.

      *gaspppp* Okayyy... This theory might actually be plausible. I was thinking about, "what about the age it wouldn't make sense." but it might actually makes sense. Well kinda if you understand. I searched how old is Hans from Frozen and according to Jennifer Lee, he's around 23 years old so that means he could also be either 22 or 24. I found this online...
      "It is kept in a cabinet in the Evil Queen's chambers. ... In this version when the Magic Mirror told the Evil Queen that the Seven Dwarfs freed Snow White from the deadly laces and that she can't be killed when she is in their protection, the Evil Queen breaks the Magic Mirror vowing to prove it wrong."
      and this...
      disneytheory.com/2014/09/11/this-timeline-puts-every-disney-movie-in-chronological-order/
      It's the timeline of disney movies in chronological order.
      It says that Snow white is set in the early 1500s and Frozen was set in 1820.
      If the Evil Queen broke the mirror that means Hans or whoever the person was inside the mirror was free but also found out in Once Upon A Time, the mirror was a genie before he became a mirror and he fell in love with the queen but he doesn't want the kind to find out so he wished for himself to always be with her since the queen's also in love with him. He granted his own wish and he lives in the queen's hand mirror. The genie gave her the hand mirror..
      The question is that how could Hans live for 320 years... Maybe because of his genie powers that makes him immortal? I couldn't find a source that says how long could a genie live.
      I found this as well...
      The mirror in Faerie Tale Theatre was played by Vincent Price. This mirror, as did all of the Queen's (Vanessa Redgrave) other mirrors, turned black as she found out that Snow White was alive.
      Other mirrors??? Hans's brothers??? If putting the clues together, it didn't specify if the mirrors turned black before or after it was broken by the queen.
      I had fun... LOL Mysteries intrigues me. BYE!!!

      Now seriously, this err...theory(?)...still explain the erratic behavior Hans have as different personae. Know that this result was officially only incidental if we believe the interviews, it's an interesting video.
      And Hans, as a real mirror, at least makes for a nice idea of fanfiction. One that would read a little much like The Huntsman: Winter's War. But that wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing.
      By this rate, I wouldn't mind something like this video being done for Jasmine or Aladdin if it can explain why Jasmine fails so hard both as a strong girl and as a princess.

    Norwegian here. Glogg (actually spelled "gløgg" and pronounced gloegg) is a traditional winter drink here. Its a bit like mulled wine, a sort of toddy with lots of christmasy spices. Some people also add raisins and crushed nuts to it, and a lot of adults mix it with red wine for that extra alcoholic kick. It's really delicious and warming and I definitely recommend you try it. It is also known as "the smell of christmas" here, if you make it you will understand why ;)

      Yes, that is most likely quite similar, although the liquid itself is in fact not really wine, it's more of a spiced toddy, but like I said a lot of adults add red wine to it for a bit of a buzz and an extra warming effect. As you know our winters up here can be devastating, so we do what we can to stay warm and safe during those "dark months".

    My theory is that Hans wasn't evil the whole time and that he truly loved Anna at the beginning of the movie (even if they only knew each other for a day). After Anna searches for Elsa, Hans helps the people in Arendel and doesn't act like a dick at all. So why would he change in this extrem way? Because of the trolls. When the trolls sing "Fixer upper" they literally say: "Get the fiance out of the way and the whole thing will be fixed". We also know from the beginning of the movie that trolls have magic powers. So what if the trolls used their magic powers to change Hans' opinion. And if you're thinking that they would never do this just imagine the beginn again. When Kristoff and Sven follow Anna, Elsa and their parents they meet a troll which said "You're cute. I'll take you with me" (I don't know the exact words, but something like this) and this is really creepy. Kristoff may have a family , which loves him and this troll takes him away from them (and even if his parents are dead, the troll cannot know this). So what we know is that the trolls do not always act in a correct "good" way and have the ability to use magic to make Hans stop locing Anna.

      Did you know? Hans was actually supposed to be just a love interest. Elsa would have been the villain, had the producers not decided to change the script after they heard Let It Go for the first time, thinking the song was too uplifting to be for a villain. So they made Elsa into the damsel in distress, and Hans was the only one with enough screen time to be a justifiable villain. They made this change when a considerable amount of the movie was already done, so they couldn't scratch the whole idea and start again, so they just fixed it midway through. Hans sudden changes weren't intended, the producers just didn't care enough to get them fixed.

A psychopath is cunning and manipulative, superficial charm grandiose sense of self worth, can trigger empathy on and off (cinematographly shown with the gloves), pathological liar, lack of remorse, any "genuine" emotion is short lived (mainly his reflections of people).

    Psychopaths don't feel very many emotions, but they become experts at pretending to do so, constantly analyzing everyone around them to find the best way to get in those people's good graces. Because most of how they act is a facade, they can freely change "masks" whenever it suits them, making them the ultimate chameleons.

      Thats a description of a sociopath, not psychopath

    • @MrMarinus18
      @MrMarinus18 6 років тому

      I'm not so sure. Sociopath is a lack of empathy. Usually when people around you look at you suspiciously you feel nervous even if you have nothing to hide or when people around you get excited you feel energized even if you have no reason to. People react automatically to others around them. Psychopaths don't have that. However it's actually a serious handicap and makes life really hard. Social interaction is important in life and those people have to learn the social cues normal people know by instinct one by one. Social interaction is extremely tiring as every social reaction is conscious and drains them and things like parties are not enjoyable to them in the slightest.
      That's why so many are criminals because it's impossible for them to feel happy in normal society. They have it even worse than autists because while autists are easily distracted and don't process social cues normally they still feel them and so learning to react to them is much easier. They can also just be among their own kind as interacting with other autists provide no barrier at all. With Sociapaths they also can't pick up and aren't interested in social cues from each other. So that absolute inability and the fact that school and work almost always involves social interaction it makes the criminal world the only place they can turn to. As they are insensitive to cues that also includes having mercy for a weak victim.
      Sociopaths wear masks because they truly have no social character. Also those that do try to be in normal society have to wear masks to keep in people's good graces because it's the only option they have. Because they don't pick up on social cues they won't notice someone getting annoyed at them until they start yelling and by then it's far too late to make up.
      All the other traits socipaths have are pretty sad when you think about it. They often need a lot of stimulation because they can't get that from social interaction. It's roughly the same as a normal person not having social interaction. When sociopaths talk to others it doesn't feel the need for social interaction like it does with normal people.

    Maybe the 'beware the frozen heart song' was because they heard stories about a child who got the shard in his eye and they were saying how 'ice and magic can't be controlled' relating back to the old story SO maybe Hans is a descendent of the little kid OR one of the other shards were sent across the world hitting Hans which probably caused his brothers to ice him out so maybe he became like the young child. When you look into someone else eyes you can actually see the reflection of yourself so when Anna looked at Hans he immediately became the mirror since the shard was in his eye.He also resembled Annas frozen heart tho hers was actually freezing

    Glogg, or gløgg, is a very popular drink around Christmas time in Denmark (and apparently also other Scandinavian countries). It's made of wine warmed up to get rid of most of the alcohol and mixed with various spices, like cinnamon, and raisins. Hope this helps :)

    So ive seen this before and there two slight alterations.
    When hans betrays anna ive seen that he is still reflecting it just that hes reflecting how anna feels about elsa. "'I thought she wouldn't hurt you' 'i was wrong'"
    Second there is one moment where hans is alone which is when he is throw into the ships hold where he just sits down on the floor and does nothing since theres no one to reflect

      Might be his opinion, but he doesn't leave it for others to decide, if they agree... Now a lot of people won't read it, but I can only recommend "the Snowqueen" as it is almost nothing like Frozen (except the main theme: "girl saves her best friend and the world with a loving heart) and instead has many many interesting aspects and characters (mostly women and animals; robbers, ravens and a shaman). It's a great peace of folklore.

    • @roamingjay7110
      @roamingjay7110 8 років тому +1

      Sherlock reference appreciated, but you're also exactly right; Hans is a high-functioning sociopath, though perhaps not quite as high-functioning as everyone's favorite consulting detective. Sociopath's are known for not being able to really experience their own emotions, so they learn from their environment and become extremely adept at mirroring the emotions and mannerisms of the people around them for survival purposes. They know they're not like everyone else, which could be dangerous, so they try their best to blend in until the time is right. Sherlock Holmes is the rare exception to this rule because he doesn't try to blend in at all. He doesn't care what everyone else thinks, and he's thoroughly embraced that. Hans, however, is on the opposite side of that spectrum; he cares too much what others think of him, so he tries to blend in, waiting for the best possible and most advantageous moment to reveal who and what he really is, which in the movie was when he knew for sure that Anna would die and not be able to reveal him. Shortly after unveiling his true self, he reverts quickly right back into his little mirrored shell, again keeping up appearances until he is just about to kill Elsa. Hans is an example of an extremely dangerous kind of sociopath because you literally can't see him coming unless you're a skeptic, like I was at first. He still managed to convince me of his genuineness when he was taking charge of helping out the villagers, which kills me, but it just proves how well-written he is as a character.

    • @roamingjay7110
      @roamingjay7110 8 років тому +1

      Even if he was a psychopath, which he's not, He definitely wouldn't be Disney's first. Claude Frollo from the Hunchback of Notre Dame predates him by 17 years, and even he wasn't the first psychopath to be featured in a Disney film. Cruella De Vil is an even older example. Disney has a long history of depicting characters with serious mental issues, including psychopathy, sociopathy, depression, paranoia, extreme narcissism, and bipolar disorder, just to name a few, and they're not just limited to being villains. In fact, several of Disney's heroes/heroines and side characters also had mental disorders. Elsa, for instance, suffered from depression. Clopin, also from the Hunchback of Notre Dame, was both a sadist and a psychopath. I'm also fairly certain that Belle had ADD, or Attention Deficit Disorder.
