@@LordDragox412 to be fair, a very common case is that people are too blind to see their own mistakes. Odds are that he looked at a bicycle and wanted to apply it on a larger scale, which has been done before in ww2.
Next to that, a LOT of innovations are small. I mean, starbucks once decided to use hazelnut instead of cocoa, because in nordic european countries, you have a hazelnut spread to be a lot more common than a chocolate spread while tasting slightly similar but a lot sweeter. Most new meals are simply old meals with something extra. New technology is often existing technology put together slightly differently than people normally do. Large innovations are often so rare that people only see them years after. Touch screens were a massive step in technology, but they existed YEARS before someone encountered a smart way to put them together.

@lordchickenhawk, those things are still sold today by different brands as "pedal generators" and deliver about 20W. There are also some generators to attach to a bike that claim to deliver up to 300W. Good enough to even charge a laptop, but if enough sunlight is available a solar system is much more convenient.
The solar charger that came with my Iridium satphone charges it full in one hour on a clear noon sky...or powers it up instantly for use with very little sunlight.
We used to use human mechanical energy in the past....then we found out that by putting the wheel in the river we could have it turn 24/7 instead of, until the human gets tired.
We literally built fucking windmills so that humans wouldn't have to create the grain themselves.
In between, we literally harnessed the power of animals.

Intrinia Studios - Just wait until someone then points out that you don't even need a source of flowing water but that the wind can turn a generator... He'll flip out and "invent" the wind turbine and claim that it will solve the world's energy problems producing free, clean energy forever.
That essentially is "free" electricity. Obviously, it's not actually free, but it is "free" in the sense that once the generator is in place and wired up, you don't have to do anything beyond maintenance.
Or how about some pellets of a mixture of U138 and U135 stuffed into zirconium tubes and inserted into a vat of water? They'd make the water boil, and the steam could be used to run a steam turbine that turns a generator! Wow, what a neat invention I just invented! I think I'll call it a "nuclear power plant"! It generates 100,000,000W of power 24/7 for several years before it needs refueling! Wow, I'm a genius! :::rolls eyes:::

That's in a closed system though. Keep that in mind when making that claim about energy. In an open system, you can easily lose energy to entropy.

That matrix scene was a studio change, because they figured people were too dumb to understand a neural network. Originally the machines were using human minds as computer power, meant to boost the speed and power of the main machine CPU. It had to do with the actual matrix, and how the minds inside the matrix were given certain problems to solve, or emotional triggers based on what the machines needed. So if they needed a math problem solved... basically, put a million human minds on the job and it is done in an instant. That sort of thing.
The battery explanation was a late addition and one the wachowskis didn't want to put in the film.

I always took the battery explanation as a well crafted lie, whether it was made by the machines or Zion leadership, someone didn't want the masses in Zion to know the true nature of the Matrix.
And they needed a human programmer (Nero) to reprogram not only the matrix but themselves if it ever got out of whack. It happened before and it will happen again. Only Nero didn't fold into the predictable pattern, but forced peace & freedom onto both sides. What a great film!

An average size adult male who is in shape dosent have a problem doing 300 watts for half an hour. This equates to around one cent of power in most places. However, farming human food is so carbon intensive it's roughly equivelant to burning coal for the electricity.
Randy Gareth or a world class cyclist who has specifically trained for hour long efforts can do about 440w for an hour. Source: that’s what Bradley Wiggins did when he broke the hour record. A good amateur can do 200-300w for an hour. If you’re going to do stationary training anyway, some of the resistance units are basically motors which are run in reverse to resist the cyclist. So it might not need much extra equipment to put a usb charge port on it I guess, but for very little actual value of electricity.
@@jimhize ironically my stationary trainer USES power (not a lot, but some for the Bluetooth and the little motor that moves the resistance magnetos). The power I produce is lost as waste heat. Not that the 250-300W that I produce on it would power my house anyway. It wouldn't even power the TV and fan that I use while on the stationary.

David Turpin yeah, mine too. Although the Tacx Neo that I use can power itself for some basic features, to get the full computer-controlled resistance it needs to be powered. Running zwift uses extra energy too. In fact that’s something they didn’t consider in this ‘invention’ - most stationary cyclists need some entertainment to combat boredom that will take energy to provide!
I’m missing the part where you need his energy drinks to do the 5 hours of cycling, because that is the real plan behind it.

@@Vgamer311 yeah the assumption the "busted" rant is based on is that people are eating extra to achieve this, or don't ever choose to exercise anyway. It would be reasonable to slate it as a bad use of resources - for example, compare the impact of sticking the same generators in a river for power, and making normal exercise bikes vs how the creator visualises it being used.
Edit: My message comes across as saying that the original proposition about Free Electric was good - I don't think that either, as the claim was that this is good for the poorest of people, which makes no sense. If anything that makes this video more annoying - the claims themselves are easy to debunk, so thunderf00t didn't need to wander off into the weeds. He went into the fat energy capacity a bit, but by then was ignoring what the product was, so didn't compare with the appropriate alternatives.

Plus, while over-hyped and poorly marketed, I dont think the idea of hooking a generator up to an exercise bike is the worst idea ever, if a bit unoriginal. The marketing should have been “hey, if you’re gonna buy an exercise bike anyway, might as well save a few bucks on your energy bill while you’re at it.”
Still wouldn’t be a miracle product, but it would at least be honest.

It doesn't take that much energy. It takes high power. An olympic cyclist can sustain 800W for about a minute = 48kJ or 400W for about an hour=1440 kJ. An average joe cyclist can do 100W for 8 hours = 2880 kJ.
Also. Toast doesn't fundamentally require much energy to make. Just that toaster was super inefficient. Make a nice insulated box and you can toast bread one 2-3 W.

JNCressey actually you can’t with a battery, when batteries are used up the potential difference (voltage) decreases. You can’t measure a battery’s power with a voltage, irrelevant of load resistance.

Also, resistances will change when components heat up and all that non-'ideal conductor' stuff. And information can't travel faster than light, so effects at one side of the circuit won't happen instantaneously when stuff changes.
Also the internal resistance messes with the calculation. One way the battery may be producing more power, but the internal resistance is taking most of it for heat, and the other way, less power is being produced, but a higher proportion of it is externally useful. So yeah, I imagine it is, as you said, more complex.

As mentioned already it's a little more complicated than that, but it's not wrong to compare the power capability of batteries by voltage. Just ask any drone racer. Assuming similar resistances a 12V battery is simply incapable of providing the power a 24V battery can. There is a reason the Telsa roadster runs on 350V or something like that, and your cellphone runs on about 4V.

50mAh isn't a power; it's an amount of energy, which would make no sense in this context. So I'm guessing you meant 50mA.
But a 50mA LED would be very dim, about the brightness of a 20W incandescent bulb.
So what I think you REALLY meant was 138mA, the current of a standard USA commercial "60W" equivalent LED lamp, 120VAC(RMS), 138mA(RMS), 9W(av). (Power factor on LED lamps is always bad, about 0.543, due to the "capacitive dropper" circuit used, so actual P=(VI)(pf)=(16.56W)(0.543)=9W.)
What the guy said is that his cordless exercycle (basically a Cybex ArcTrainer 750 rebranded) can power 1050 equivalent lighting watts. So the actual power is ((1050)(9)/60)W = 158W. But due to the bad power factor, that would actually only power about 600 "equivalent lighting watts", or about 10 lamps.
So, he's only claiming to be able to power 10 LED lamps, not 1000, so you're off by a factor of 100.
10 LED lamps are enough to light-up one small apartment, not a city. And that one small apartment would only stay lit while someone is actually pedaling vigorously on the exercycle. And forget about running refrigerators, microwave ovens, air conditioners, etc, no power for those; you only have 158W to work with. To power a single electric bedroom heater, for example, you'd need 10 people cycling vigorously on 10 of these machines, all night long.
the whole 'mAh' is stupid term concocted by mobile battery complex.
The voltage would vary during the usages, so the 'mAh' rating would be inaccurate accordingly.

well, it would be genius to apply it in gyms though. A lot of spinning classes that cost electricity rather than giving electricity. A lot of "wasted" potential energy. Just adding a small generator to each machine that doesnt neccesarily require electricity and voila, every single gym on the planet could turn into a small additional power generator.

To be fair, exercise has health benefits other than weight loss. So if we go with the recommendation by the Department of Health of exercising for 200 minutes each week, then we might as well collect that 100W rather than just let it go.
Also, the writers of The Matrix knew the energy idea was stupid. They wanted it to be that humans were being used for computing power, but the stuido forced them to change it because they wanted to dumb it down for general audiences.

But okay, it's not worth it. Going off your pricing we get a saving per year of 100watts *(200minutes per week) * 1 year * (1.5 pennies / (1 kilowatthour)) = 26.07 pennies.
Or, just hear me out, you could instead do manual labor quickly to exercise and help clean up your neighborhood. That's a far better use of your time.

The military went with hand cranks (rather than foot cranks) because hand-cranked devices are smaller and lighter, and radio conversations tend to be short.

The amount of electricity someone on a bike could generate is extremely tiny. Haven't watched this whole video yet but my bullshit alarm went off immediately when the guy started saying you could get a day's worth of electricity from 1 hour of pedaling.
I'm pretty sure everyone at some point has the idea to make electricity this way, and it can be done, but it's something like a person pedaling at full force is enough to power a light bulb and that's it. You can't power your entire home with your body. A gym full of people pedaling might produce enough to power 1 house, but the equipment costs money and it's certainly way cheaper to just use standard means of producing power.
At the gym you may not put out MUCH power, but if you are going to exercise anyways, why not get some of the energy you put in back?

The cost of manufacturing and repairing the turbines and batteries, both in terms of money and materials would very likely be (much) greater than the cost of just burning the fuel to make up the difference. A person cycling all day might power a phone for the day. Meanwhile a gallon of gas can power a phone for 20 years. There's a reason the industrial revolution happened and we stopped chopping our wood and plowing our fields by hand (even before this we used horses). Humans just don't put out anywhere near as much power as modern methods.

I've literally seen much simpler versions of these in gyms, where it does actually make some sense. If you're going to work out anyway on a cycle, then why not have it generate some energy while you're at it? It's definitely NOT going to power the whole gym, but it helped save a little lol.

I feel like belts would slip a little during use and get worn. I like the idea of a direct drive, but a chain that's properly tensioned can give you more engineering freedom to put the generator bit where you like.

Well, you can have that today - but the watts you can draw over that 24 hour period is pretty small.
Say you are in great condition and can crank out 400 watts for that full hour, if the system is 100% efficient, you have generated 400 watt-hours of electricity. If commercial electricity is costing $0.15/KWh, you have produced $0.06 worth.
If that 400 watt-hours is stored in a lossless storage device and you want to use it evenly over the 24 hours, you can only draw 16.67 watts. That MIGHT be enough to power a 50 watt equivalent LED light bulb for 24 hours - assuming your power storage device does not suffer from voltage sag and converting the stored DC voltage to AC is 100% efficient.
Assume you have a toaster that consumes 1200 watts. That means you can run that toaster for 20 minutes.
I suspect the food you would have to eat to generate that 400 watt-hours of power would cost far more than the $0.06 retail cost of simply getting from the electrical grid. Also, you have to consider the cost of the fancy bike generator. If it cost you $2000, then you would have to pump for about 4167 eight hour days(365 days/year for almost 11.5 years) just to cover the cost of the generator. At 1 hour/day, you wouldn't recover the cost of the bike in your lifetime.

Just don't forget that trying to actually starve yourself to lose weight doesn't really work. Your body will switch into starvation mode, and will cling to every little bit of food you get, turning it directly into fat, meaning you'll only start gaining weight. If you really want to help the poor with a pedal powered device. It needs to be usable with a standard bicycle or easy to build locally from bicycles. It seems that the best bike machines are those that do direct work rather than generating electricity. Things like grain mills and blenders. In parts of the world where people are grinding grain by hand, a bike powered grain mill is a massive improvement.
