There may be a hollowness to fishing for open water fish to you, Randy, but one size doesn't fit all. Some people get as much fulfillment from it as those beating the banks. Live and let live, Randy!
Really agree with this video. Steers people towards learning the patterns of fish behavior without so much hate on FFS. This is why I fish. Figuring out the patterns/the puzzle of bass fishing. It takes time on the water……with a knowledge base that steers you in the right direction. And you must have discipline to not fall prey to the perfect magic lure or color. I do use FFS to locate structure and narrow my focus in a particular area. I don’t rely on it. I have years of experience that usually puts me around fish. I can understand how young anglers could get hooked on the technology side of bass fishing…..and I agree with you that it is not nearly as rewarding as truly learning how to pattern fish. I think your video conveys this thinking by encouraging folks to learn vs. focusing so much negativity on FFs. Well done.
I agree! I'm 57 live in Northern Indiana and have done nothing but bank fishing my whole life, and can put a meal on the table most of the time! No electronics except for my cellphone!!
I certainly see this. People will gladly watch 1000 hours of videos and buy anything the creator tells them will get fish. But they wont just go out every day and fish for like 2 hours. If they could just take this step they'd naturally be inclined to learn more about seasonal patterns than lures. If I'm being honest most lures are extemely self intuitive with a little practice.
100%. And really, at least in my experience, only a few work really well. Chatterbait evo has been my go to this past year. Those things work in almost any situation. Swim jigs, keitech swimbaits, under spins, pitching jigs, beaver tails, frogs, jointed minnow and a senko are basically all i use. In the spring and early summer I'll fish from 430 am to 630 before I go to work, then go again after I get done. I absolutely love it, and I do extremely well, even from the bank in high pressured ponds spots. I rarely take the things I hear in videos to the lake. Most of them are commercials anyway. The other "tips" just seem to be things I have been doing for 25 years that I just knew to do as kid. Finally made it up to st. Lawrence to fish smallies for the first time last summer. Never caught a smallie in my life, never fished water like that in my life, it's swampy and stained here. After one morning I was able to get it dialed in and slayed them. It's just natural to me.
@@smelltheglove2038 I live where smallies are and it's fantastic :) they're amazing fish. I also prefer to fish from the bank. Loading out an entire boat isn't something a full time worker can do very often. But we can easily pull up for a few hours before/after work :)
@@smelltheglove2038 Also I pretty much use a topwaters popper(surface), and swim jig(suspended) and a wacky/carolina rig(bottom) all year round. That's the deadly trio imo, if they don't take those, I just try another spot.
@@mikeandrade586 you ever use a jig with a craw trailer? That's what I went with up in NY. The full size wasn't getting bit so I downsized to the "finesse" jig, and they went nuts for it. I also tied on a JDM jitterbug style topwater cicada, a little inch an half number that works well down here in south NJ, and hot damn. I know the Delaware has smallies a little further north from where I am but traffic going up there is a nightmare and just don't have it in me to explore the area knowing it'll be a four hour trip back.
@@smelltheglove2038 Yeah, small swimming jig with a creature bait or like a zoom super chunk are the best thing overall here. Largemouth, smallies, even pickeral and trout. I once had a brave bluegill whose mouth looked like it was too small to hook on there. I don't know how he hooked himself, but I admire his dedication. Hook must've been literally twice his mouth size, I had to rotate the whole fish to get him off lololol.
The truth is that bass fishing is a crazy addicting sport where the cost to catch ratio is enormous. Information fuels the fire. With all the gear and knowledge that I've acquired, I still have those days where I just can't get bit. When I catch them, I end up buying more tackle. It's crazy fun, but can become overwhelming at times. I'm averaging 1.5 to 2.2 fish per trip over the past 4 years.
Watch all you want. Time on the water is the key to success. You cannot learn the variety of sensations, we feel, when a fish touches, mouth’s, or moves a bait in the water. That SKILL takes years….
I always wanted to catch the biggest bass. I read everything I could about catching large bass. Over and over I read about stealth and fishing at a snails pace. There are less than a handful of lures that catch the biggest bass. At this point I've caught enough of the bass that always wanted to catch so I'm diverting my focus to stripers.
There's no shad where I live, so like 90% of rules for bass just don't apply at all. You gotta just get a feel for the lakes here and they're all different.
@@mikeandrade586 yup. It's why I don't take anyone the info from these videos or basically all bass fishing media with me fishing. None of it applies to where I fish.
This is proof that Randy is actually trying to make you a better angler. He sells a service to help people find fish (lake map breakdown), yet he's telling you what to learn so that you won't need that service. I bucked at some of his stuff too, but then I tried it. More often than not, I changed. I'm currently at odds with the baitcaster grip video, I palm the reel. But I'm gonna try out his advice and see how it goes. I've built my rods to be balanced with the reel in my hand so im skeptical, but I'm still gonna try it. You would be wise to follow suit.
@glynnreid1217 no one! that's the way fishing is supposed to be. No electronic fish finders. Just look at the bank and the structure and try to figure them out.
I think this is true of most activities humans participate in where there is a learning process to achieve success. Unless you get access to regular, expert advice early on most fall into the trap of looking for easy solutions to complex problems. Unfortunately YT is the prefect drug for this addiction. In golf and tennis its just buy better clubs and rackets, in fishing it's just buy the next amazing fish catching lure. This however never works. A retired CIA Ground Branch operator i was discussing firearms training with once said " spend your money on training not equipment". The fishing translation of this is" spend your money on gas for your boat or hiring a local guide, not the latest "gotta have lure" from YT.
If you dont have a boat it's tough . I don't know what part of the country you're fishing or how much pressure your water is getting. I assume you know the basics but are a newbie so go to the friendliest bass tackle shop in your area, spend a few bucks on the tackle they recommend , ask questions. Not a box store but a real tackle shop where they will want you to be successful and buy more tackle. We all paid our dues with money and time on the water. Good luck, keep your line wet!
@martynshaw884 good advice. Where I live we have no tackle shops though. It's only Cabelas or salt water tackle shops that are an hour and a half away, Cabelas same distance. Strange too because I live in a highly populated area.
Don't go home without at least one fish! I tried eveything I knew on a fish in a local creek. No way, no bites, so I actually killed it with a rock and took it home. I was 14, and no it wasn't a rockfish!
Before the time you were done talking about your sponsors & other plugs I got a 18 second advertisement.. tell me how me watching 2 minutes of your video deserves you guys to make $10 dollars?

Sometimes the bass in east Texas will fool you and do the exact opposite as far as seasonal patterns.
