- Wow. Talk a bout a dark children's movie. Well "dark" by 90's Disney standards. The Hunchback of Notre Dame was probably one of my favorites of the Disney Renaissance when I was a child.
Does it still hold up over 20 years later?

Definitely. The character development of frollo getting darker and darker over the movie was amazing. Definitely the Disney villain that I hate the most. I mean I love how well they did but I usually don’t hate animated Disney villains that much, but in this I really hate frollo. So amazing job at making him so villainous and evil.

Actually, now that you mention it, I would have preferred that they ditched the gargoyles and expanded the priest's role instead. At the very least drastically reduce the gargoyles role and make it abundantly clear that quasimodo is imagining them because he's lonely.
I definitely agree with that. But they have to make the story at least a little light hearted and funny since it’s so dark
I just realized from a different comment they're REAL though. Notre Dame revealed the gargoyles to Quasimodo because he was pure and worthy. Gargoyles are know to stave and fight off evil spirits and entities. That's why the gargoyle comes to life in front of Frolo at the end, she's showing him just how much he f'ed up. So actually, I really love the inclusion of the gargoyles, it gives Notre Dame herself depth and life.
Only one gargoyle is worth keeping and the is Laverne.
May I recommend the stage version. Frollo is an archdeacon and the chorus is the gargoyles. Its actually very good, I highly recommend watching it.
Or maybe they are unable to move beyond perhaps very little and is like a guiding voice for Quasi.
"And He shall smite the wicked and plunge them into the fiery pit!"
Well, Frollo wasn't exactly wrong...

Judge Frollo's Final Words
A nice touch during the song Hellfire is that those robed figures are chanting a Latin phrase that translates to "My fault. My most grievous fault."
It's part of the mass, called "Confiteor" or "I confess", which the whole point of is to confess to your sins as a flawed human being and pray for mercy and guidance.
It highlights how Frollo's delusion of righteousness and virtue flies completely contrary to the actual points and teachings he tries to hide behind that he continues to defend and deny in the face of those own teachings and lessons being turned against him and it being shouted in his face that he is the one in the wrong.
Even his first lines in the song show this off.
"Of my virtue I am justly proud" "I'm so much better than the common crowd"
That is the textbook definition of pride and vanity as a sin since virtue is the bare minimum a person should do and is not a monumental thing to take such pride and glory in, and he fully displays that vanity while trying to call himself virtuous and ask for salvation without admitting it's all his own fault he's on this path or considering changing his ways to save himself even when he knows what he's doing will send him on the path to damnation.
That place with many skeletons is a real place under the Paris and it call Catacombs, its a deep Graveyard buried in time.
4:15 in the original book, they are pretty much just Quasimodo’s imaginary friends. In this movie, u see the gargoyles in fight scenes and they actually hit ppl so I guess they’re real and alive in the movie.
Or it’s disney fun and magic which is needed in such a dark story
I like to think that Quasimodo passed out because he was physically and mentally exhausted at that point.
He rescued Esmeralda, battles Frollo's guards, thought Esmeralda had died, then after speaking out against Frollo, he learned that the man who brought him up and told him his whole life the world was evil was the one who murdered his birth mother. This revelation, after everything that happened, was just too much for him and it burned him out in the most vital moment
Take a shot everytime he sighs in disappointment at Hugo 🤣

Yes, Frollo, the darkest and most realistic Villain ever.
And that’s one of the reasons why he’s so terrifying. Because there are real ppl that are actually like him in the world
I know this is an "old" video and others most likely have pointed this out already, but: judging by the context, that wasn't lava - why would a church even have lava in cauldrons? - but rather molten metal used for making the church bells.
This movie is dark. And people are saying that Turning Red is inappropriate for kids?! Have they revisited any of the Disney classics, especially this one?! Have they seen The Hunchback of Notre Dame? The whole movie is inappropriate.

The is a live stage version that was done in Seattle. There is a video of Out There. The actor playing Quasimodo is deaf, so one of the gargoyles sings while Quasi signs along. It’s even more emotional than the animated version

Also ALSO, really happy that when Norte Dame caught fire that none of the glass windows were destroyed. Structure can be rebuilt; those windows are priceless and cannot be redone to the same craftsmanship as when first made.

Hunchback is my favorite Disney movie. It’s dark, and the music is incredible. I saw it on the big screen when it was originally released, and the animation was amazing, especially the siege on the cathedral and the burning oil pouring down

in the disney film, quasi is supposed to be about 18-19, she's believed to be early twenties. Obviously in the books she was much younger, at 16. Frollo I would assume is in his 60s? maybe

Classic old Disney villain death, his own evils are his undoing
for Gaston it was his ego and pride, for Ursula it was her arrogance, for Frollo it was his obsession and purity, scar’s udnerhandedand double dealing nature etc.
all there wicked traits ends up leading them to destroy themselves
Scar threw the Hyenas under the bus to save himself, and they turned on him as he did them
Gaston falls off the tower after stabbing beast (instead of fleeing when he could)
Ursula is so focused on killing Ariel that she ignores Eric until he rams the ship into her
and Frollo's obsession with Esmerelda and being purified in gods eyes, that he tries to destroy esmeralda and Quasimodo leading to him falling into his own literal hell
Also that’s not lava, its liquid copper which they would have used to make and cast the bells or repairs in the bell tower
The ending is that they all died but Frollo went to hell. That's why the ending there's no lava and Esmaralda and Phoebus is in white.

I know we all hate the gargoyles, but without them we wouldn’t have the stronger than stone line right before the climax which is my opinion the best singular line in the whole movie.

It’s quite annoying really. He keeps asking the stupidest questions. If he would only keep his mouth shut and pay attention, he would know that the Feast of Fools is the only day Gypsies can walk around and perform in the streets freely without being arrested. Or maybe I’m too familiar with this story.
Anyways, no idea what blind person told him he looks like Quasimodo, because his arrogant butt doesn’t.

Not gonna lie the ending battle really used to bother me like I suspend my disbelief for a lot of things but this one was really hard to until I kind of just took it as a metaphor as oh well I mean it is a religious movie maybe it’s just Hell did open up on earth and once Frollo was killed it closed back up

Same here, and the Victor Hugo novel is significantly darker than this movie.
Of course the book is more dark. It's still Disney, they can't do this much darkness for kids. I honestly surprise they did this much dark in this movie in the first place.
