- We have now walked more than 700 miles on the Appalachian Trail and currently walking in Virginia. In this video, I ask Bennet (aka Magpie) from Massachusetts why he is walking the AT and what advice he might have for someone else that wants to take on an adventure of their own….thank you for sharing this video!

Derek, I love the story you told about the mansion with a dark room into which we are afraid to go. Growing up as a child, my mother had many bouts of depression, once even having a "mental breakdown". I never understood this as a child, as I grew up in a loving home filled with love. This was her dark room. There came a time when she began to have recurring dreams about the same house you just described (dark and spooky). She would climb to the upstairs level and enter a dark hallway with a closed door at the end. My mom would always wake up in terror and fear at this point in her dream. Talking with me one day about her fear of this dream, I told her, "Next time you dream this dream and come to the door, just open it." She did dream the dream again and came to the door and opened it. Surprisingly she saw an older woman sitting in a rocking chair. The woman looked up at my mom and smiled a beautiful smile. My mom never dreamed that dream again.

Great Videos. Don't you dare quit at this point!! I missed this video and saw the video title of today's! You are an inspirational person and are getting far more views that anyone else hiking the trail this year. If you did more videos, it would be amazing, like two a week! I love how you ask people how the feel right now or what they are thinking at the moment. Almost nobody gets into the psychology of the trail and the mental struggle that people go through, the up and down emotions. You do such a wonderful job of bringing this aspect to us. I love the guys answer about why he was on trail, when he said he was getting everything he wanted in life but wasn't fulfilled. I think that's human nature and we are living in a time of such mental health struggles for exactly that reason. Humans, especially men, need a struggle, goal, and/or a reason to live. Our struggles make us grateful for the good things in life and when we accomplish hard things, we are fulfilled and proud. I think, especially men, are missing that in life and it's the reason for the struggle us men are having. I heard a guy talking about research that tells us that we should do something hard every single day and that people who do are happier and live longer. I agree. A great book about this topic is "Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience." The author's name is Mikail, his last name is super long. It begins with a C. The book really changed my life!

Another inspiring video, Derek. You’re talent for documenting the human journey and interview technique is incredible. The mental side of these challenges should not be underestimated or ignored by people wishing to do these things. I ran a 100k ultra at the weekend and someone I met said “… you’re on your own with your mind for over 12 hours. And some people can’t do that. They can do the physical but not the mental”. Belief in yourself and allowing yourself to sit with those thoughts is really key to mental wellness I feel.
Love following you along. I think your showing the side of hiking many that don’t hike, don’t realize- the people. Yes it’s beautiful but people tend to be different in trail

You are a gift to us all! I lived for years half a mile from the Cloverdale post office. I took in hikers, fed hikers, took them for equipment repairs, drove them home for funerals in two cases, and made myself available as much as possible. I'm glad that you are finding trail angels along your way. I've hiked many miles of the AT, but never as through hiker. I've hiked all over the country, and Canada.
I'd love to come walk in Ireland. Maybe you could recommend some places there.
Your philosophies are akin to my own and I appreciate you sharing those thoughts. I'm on a pension, but when the next check comes in I'll buy you a cup of coffee.
I've hiked in the Rockies for nearly 2 weeks of unending rain sleet and snow, so I can relate to all this.

Eagerly following your journey as i do with all your videos,in west cork at the moment and staying with a gentleman called john devoy who was a good friend of dervla murphy,john cycled from norway to cape town in 1985,quondam his book is a fascinating read and maybe something that would be of interest to you derek,safe travels

I've wanted to hike the AT for years..and even got my gear and hiked all of CT and MA on weekend trips..but life circumstances have prevented me from going. Now at 65 I still dream of doing it..I hope I can someday soon...and I hear your words magpie...I will never be "ready" ..have to make it happen 😊
