One way to counter varus is to burst him immediately. If he manage to get his worms on you by auto attacking then you are really fucked. Trick should focus on damage instead of being defensive against him. He can also build semi tank items but instead he built gauntlet and he focused on leveling his phoenix instead of tiger.
Pretty sure in order to beat Varus you have to NOT eat all of his autos for free so he can continuously proc his passive on you and then go for some high damage and destroy him cause he's very unsafe on his own, his ultimate being his only form of survivability. It's as simple as that and it's why Varus top isn't meta.
