A test is to tell an athlete to throw a ball as long and as far as they possible can. You will see a few things. You will see a shoulder tilt, a load of the backside, and a longer arm action down.
There are always exceptions. But I truly believe many high level softball outfielders are not long enough… they are to worried about quick arm action, with nothing on their throw. Especially a gap fly ball to the fence or down the line. Hand can’t be down to the knee. But atleast to the hip as an outfielder.
I believe that hand has to be a bit lower. What is longer? Longer back or longer below. MLB outfielders hands are below the hip. I believe to gain true arm strength as a softball outfielder, elbows break, and hand has to be hip level or slightly above. I don’t think long back engages all the muscles that need to be engaged.
