    As someone who was raised by a man with absolutely no emotional intelligence at all, I can tell you it is incredibly important. Emotional intelligence includes sympathy, empathy and emotional understanding. We need that in a leader just as much as we need intellect. Knowledge can be taught and you can surround yourself with the right advisors for that. Emotional intelligence and the ability to emotionally relate to people? You can't teach that.

      Isn't Breaking Bad about a man who can't afford cancer treatments so he has to turn to crime??? The end.

    • @brandon2743
      @brandon2743 5 місяців тому

      @@elaineb7065 The problems that the war on drugs caused are very present in Breaking Bad. The militarization of the police, violence in Latin America, a stigma against getting help when it's needed, preventable loss of life, and the show demonstrates that every effort to stop the production of drugs just leads to manufacturers finding loopholes. I agree that Breaking Bad is also an indictment of the American healthcare system, but it also throws jabs at the war on drugs.

    This episode is 9 years old and the Danish zoos bit still has me in HORROR--what the actual heck?!

    • @Gareethtw
      @Gareethtw 5 місяців тому

      I did cover what the heck. earlier but I think you get a notification. Nearly all zoos in Europe and all those ethical enough so I would go to them ( have a successful captive breeding programs for at least 1 animal that may become extinct in the wild ) participate in a program that makes decisions about how best to ensure a broad gene pool for animals in captivity. There is a limit to how many offspring of a specific male or female animal can go on to have offspring of their own, That is in line with good not just zoo management but it is why we could calculate how large a gene pool of humans it takes to populate an area without introducing too many genetic issues and concentrating them
      The zoos report on their animals and decisions about which zoos get what animals are made, You cannot really neuter a giraffe and they don't have short lifespans that particular giraffe had the same sire as too many other giraffes in that animals pool so when that happens and no attrition due to disease happens to giraffes with that sire then there is no choice but to put the animal down .
      Those are the rules and consistent with good husbandry. Having to euthanize a giraffe who in the wild would be eaten anyway it does make very little sense to not use it as meat. Zoo animals benefit from variety and lions are expensive in terms of their need for meat but due to habit loss and now with areas sometimes rendered unable to support human or animal life so swiftly captive breeding is more important than ever but it does have to be done in a way that ensures a broad enough gene pool to maximize the health of the animals exists, To practice one set of rules for animals that may be released to the wild and another for those that is unlikely for would be to have less healthy animals ,
      Breeding goes on naturally so unexpected baby booms happen. Animals differ in how long it takes to be sure that most things that could go wrong in terms of gene expression have and a good amount of data is needed for each animal .
      The baffling part really is the amount of coverage what is a routine practice in all participating zoos in Europe got for a zoo in Denmark when you can look up how many animals in European zoos get euthanized for the same reason as the giraffe .
      That people get crazy ideas and think hey they now a roadside zoo in the US that would take it doesn't change the rules they agreed to be bound by and that a painless death is better than say if they had decided to give the lions a more authentic how to have giraffe meat, That giraffe was doomed when a threshold of animals with the same sire had lived long enough to be past the more risky part of the lifecycle . He was the giraffe selected for euthanasia . He would not have been allowed to breed and there is no way to prevent that as neutering a giraffe .
      As for the dissection it could be that having spent most of my life in Canada has not resulted in someone who sees the issue with that. You don't dissect an animal during the summer school break of course
      I would have liked the chance myself as a child but zoos in Canada aren't as willing to be educational , While potentially parents and grandparents could have shown more judgement on if the kids was ready but even the kids who seemed a little upset still benefit. Denmark's been around a long time and as mostly island nation with narrow strip of mainland it doesn't have much wild animals,
      I don't think it was quite fair to mock the notion that it could be an educational thing to see the inside of a lion. Discomfort is okay as some of them will still go into fields where they might in fact see the insides of animals or people as part of their work. Then again most things there are milked for their educational benefits I think that's very practical but I am a bit convinced that if you are born in a pragmatic nation however young you are on leaving pragmatism remains a core trait

    Just watched this in May 2024. As a Canadian, I love John's characterization of Canadians and our elections and our politicians. Harper was evil. We were so lucky to see the end of him. I voted for Trudeau but had the same concern that he was a pretty boy and might not be effective. He turned out to be great. He has been in power ever since. He started by building a cabinet filled with women, men and featured diversity. Instead of arriving at work in a limo, he hired a bus and took the entire team to the gates of parliament and walked hand in hand as a team across the property to go to work.
    To me one of the best moments was when Trump came to the G8 meeting hosted in
    Canada and then attempted to turn the world against Trudeau. Trudeau looked great on the world stage and Trump looked like the evil empire. To this day I believe Trump was pissed because girlfriend Ivanka clearly greased her panties in the presence of Justine. How sweet!

    • @Gareethtw
      @Gareethtw 5 місяців тому

      Before they rigged the merger their acronym was CRAP so PP CRAP is truth in advertising.
      It isn't Trudeau vs PP though we are not a two party nation and neither should be PM but is quite likely that PP cannot be. He's one of less than a handful of MPs in the entire history of Canada to refuse a background check. He's said he can't keep state secrets when he had to justify that when he could not do a preliminary review of some documents in a situation where Singh could then stand in for him.
      The real issue is he cannot be briefed with the PM daily where there is nothing that lets that be an other qualified party leader, To only have the PM know some things or hear some things is not working but while even with a background check PP does not have the attributes of someone who could go above the lowest security level most things briefings about are time sensitive enough that it does not matter much.
      His unwillingness to have one though and his inability then to be briefed while I do think if it had been taken before the Supreme Court if this is disqualifying in Opposition Leader as hearing what the PM does is an invisible but an important rule of OL but it will be disqualifying in the unlikely event he wins an election. }
      I think the Liberals want to run against him as at this point I doubt the current PM could beat O'Toole . Still it is not about who would be worse , This govt and nearly every MP has turned parliament into what you would expect of 9 year olds with a sub only worse,
      |
      They've passed on bill so despicable that on that alone they should fall .
      As the existing parties have failed us people should consider running as independents I will be as I have an NDP MP who is as unavailable when he is supposed to be in the riding in his office as Elizabeth May was when she was my MP Althou8gh his you do get an automated out of office, Her's there was no sign she had staff,
      I found the repeated dropping of the disabled from the NDP wish list so we were the least heled group in the pandemic to be horrible I found support of the unwanted expansion of MAID to the non-terminally ill disable to be beyond horrible .
      As all of the parties have failed up new parties or running as independents ( you don't need a riding committee of fully formed policy for that , despite being a policy wonk once upon a time I will run not expecting to win but because not a single person who will run in this riding gave enough darns about the disabled . A country that helps the lazy the most and the disabled the least is not civilized. I had 3 perma CERB young adults move into the house attached to the porch my hovel is under, They broke public health rules with catered parties , They bought 3 tvs so massive they did not have a place to put one of them so they left it in the rain , The one who had been employed which meant a really nice house rented for 1000 as the employer is the landlord here but when he hurt his back so was off for a few weeks when he was deemed fit to return he asked to be laid off so he could get CERB . This would mean they needed to spend 1 third of their CERB on rent but they did not do that. Two weeks after it ended they stole my refundables as they couldn't pay the rent and would be evicted
      I had shoes that were so rotted out that when I needed to see a foot team they were deemed a safety hazaard and due to only being able to get glasses every three years I can't see well enough for the type of work I do very well and could easily get a telecommuting to the EU job ( I am a bit wasted in the Canadian workplace where 2 languages is enough ) You have to choose between a hovel and eating every day if you are on PWD and thanks to the misery scale your hunger and rats biting you as they destroy your bed is a part of it It's legislated poverty ,
      In order for this misery though to qualify you for MAID it has to be without remedy, If hunger, a lack of healthcare remotely good enough, rats biting you in inaccessible housing unless you are homeless , ( In BC the disabled can be kicked out of homeless shelters if their disability causes a safety issue, It's quite dangerous in the homeless shelters here , The group most impacted by this tend to be the deaf as you if you cannot hear that two people are going at it with shovels you will be kicked out, Small groups show up every day to try to get on the waitlist for a bed but they will never get them because they cannot hear trouble starting
      This does make it so more disabled people who due to not having an addiction die when it is cold .
      The PM gave my Premier more money for housing the day after the report of conflict of interest where the Province ( him as he had been Housing Minister days before ) and the CEO of BC housing were named as guilty , If he built Federal housing which does exist I could get in but that won't happen ,
      I can't tell a doctor I fall and wind up unconcious as other times I have bought up falling they have brought up MAID . My life has value and it is not my disability that is causing misery but the legislated poverty of all levels of govt.
      Anyone who thinks this set of parties has not failed us all should do more Hansard reading. Don't forget the Senate as there you can read several senators agree with one that says MAID will need to be expanded to children as it is against the charter of rights to discriminate based on age,
      Uhm that's within the adult population so you cannot refuse to hire for being 59 and thus too close to retirement or being 20 and too yioung for jobs they are otherwise qualified for
      We do in fact discriminate against children . Babies cannot go to war, buy booze, cigarettes or marijuana , They have to be 18 or even 19 for all but war as you can technically join a militia at 16 and while we typically don't if war breaks out send younger militia and post WW 2 we would add them to the reg forces
      the calibre of those serving as a check and balance against MPs is not exactly high,
      They get tasked with things and the whole we do discriminate based on the age of children and the law says we have to if people with decisions making power who are supposed to be capable of suggesting things to parliament is that then every party represented in the Senate is also in a state of having failed us
      More fiscal incompetence won't work Canada has the highest debt to GDP ratio and as the GDP shrank unexpectedly we could soon be in the same position as the US where we will never be able to get out of debt 2 weeks after the austerity budget cut Federal funding to a lot of programs for the poor a record amount was paid to strking civil servants,
      There is still an unaccounted for 375 million which had been 900 million for a few weeks but I guess it was the loose change in the PMs least facourite suit ( no what it had been spent on was finally worked out )
      We cannot afford to think of it as a hold your nose and vote election as in 5 years there will be no way to salvage enough of the drivers of the economy ,
      The MPS value themselves of their party and their party over Canadians and that is the opposite order
      They all need to go so Canada can become a modern country again with her priorities straight ,

For three days after, with the help of the local police, for 25 cents you could get your picture taken with the dead elephant. Then the butchers arrived cut up the corpse and the skeleton was sent to the Smithsonian. Denmark should move forward a hundred years. We shouldn't do this anymore

      What did not come up is the giraffe had to be destroyed ( and then why not use it as food ) as zoo is part of a group of most zoos in Europe ) while the giraffe was healthy he could not go to another zoo in Europe either as the giraffe shared the same sire as too many giraffes There are a lot of reasons why you cannot neuter a giraffe but there is a limit on how many zoo animals can share the same male of female parent, The birth of more giraffes meant they had too many giraffes and the giraffe put down was not placeable at another zoo.
      Denmark is not a backwards nation This was a contractual obligation and in lines with good management as we do live on a planet where we repeatedly put animals in the wild in danger but the consequences of too many of any animal sharing the same gene pool can be quite bad
      The dissection made good sense I mean why should kids have to wait until they are old enough to dissect a fetal pig. That's grade 12 in BC, Canada to see the anatomy of an animal inside. Some will grow up to be vets or doctors and while where things are and so on is not the same and other differences exist I would have loved to see something like that when I was young.
      Plus while potentially some of the kids were too young and maybe their parents and grandparents could have done more to ensure they were ready - it is not like here there as there is not much wildlife so it is not like they routinely see roadkill or whatever.
      Some will be farmers or butchers . Denmark is a pragmatic nation and the education of children is considered so important that one of the duties of it's very nerd friendly university is to build better brains in children. This came up when someone commented they did not seem to play classical and a conductor opened with this , ( They do in fact play classical but they don't tend to film it as much so it is under-represented on their channel )
      It's not like the elephant situation . I know they research the show so they likely knew why both animals had to be destroy. It is an honest nation and if you do not do what becomes an obligation as you have to report the captive breeding numbers back so an overall census of animals and their parentage exists for the close to all reputable zoos who participate and it is not the zoo itself but the board of the group that makes decisions about the animals of all participating zoos who said to destroy those animals and potentially more since. Also will have said that to other zoos but in order to get animals that might need preserving which is they only real way a zoo can justify existing they do have to be a member of the group that monitors animals and makes decisions about where animals go They do get a lot of data about which helps with deciding for more endangered animals where captive breeding has good success,
      They sure didn't cover it when my province sold off a property that had a very small mostly nocturnal animal section which had the most successful captive breeding for two animals both critically endangered and that seems more problematic than euthanizing a giraffe who cannot be placed in a zoo in Europe and is the giraffe the organizing body says should be euthanized
      It only reminds you of 100 years ago because to say what I did about the facts left out would take the whole show and people want to have warm fuzzy notions about less ethical zoos

      I don't. I have been in two provinces and had connections in 4. And I am well informed on the situation in Canada and what some people believe the situation is vs what it is...
      Some Canadians believe that they are in a recession when they are not by definition.
      The "slow yet total economic and demographics destruction..." That's just scaremongering nonsense. It's an extreme and gravelly exaggerated claim that lacks merits.
      It's even literarly self-contradictory by definition. Economy is the distribution, exchange and consumption of good embedded in social, political and economic relationships reciprocity, exchange and consumerism. Even if society was to completely collapse, you would still have some form of distribution, exchange, and consumption of goods and services. A carrot is a good, a slice of bread is a good, a rat burger is a good... It's literally impossible to destroy the economy because you need to get some good to survive. Even hunter-gatherer have an economy by definition.
      But even metaphorically this is exaggerating.
      Besides the fact is that the economy remained stable under Trudeau. GDP growth, unemployment rate, and many other leading indicators have been consistently positive - except for a couple of years, but it's not like a once a century pandemic should be blamed on Trudeau.
      Our demographic is expanding at a stable rate thanks to immigration, but blocking immigration would risk a reverse pyramid at some point because people are not having as many babies thanks to a good situation in terms of human rights and socio-economics.

      @@BuddyDarDarTV At least in Canada we have multiple choices, not just 2. This keeps the main party from just bulldozing through their policies. They have to make deals with other parties meaning the policies benefit more Canadians. It is only when the main party has an overwhelming majority that this happens, and even then we can hold a non confidence vote and get them out. Look it up, it has happened in the past.

    You know if it wasn't for this show, I would have never rememebered Trudeau's "party trick" lol. I forgot how no one really took him seriously for 2-3 years before he became PM. It was almost like stunt casting for a Liberal Leader since the Liberals went through so many duds for ten years.

    Do you have a video of Biden or Trump falling down a set of stairs and surviving? Canadians vote with paper ballots in the Federal election. One manual voting system for the entire country to ensure every ballot is counted. You could learn something from your northern neighbor America.

    • @jeffparker1617

      It's pretty easy when the ballot has 1 decision on it, unlike the US where a ballot could have dozens of races to vote on. That said at the last federal election I knew a scrutineer who was working and the PPC scrutineer at the same polling station was chirping that electronic voting machines in Ontario would give the election to the Liberals.

      @@jeffparker1617 In every Riding there are many choices to make. The US election is a two party system with every State having it's own ballot counting system. It's easy to rig an election in the US. Proof was in the 2000 election when Gore had the most votes by lost when the Supreme Court of the US appointed George Bush Jr as the President.

    Just FYI from a psych nerd: emotional intelligence is a real thing and not enough politicians have any. (Of course the ones that do rarely use their powers for good, but that’s politics.)
    Also: “actual intelligence” is so poorly understood that one definition still says “the thing intelligence tests test for”. As in, “we have no clue what it is but we can kinda measure it so let’s say it’s real important.”

    Yeah, I think Mr. Oliver needs to revisit this topic after 9 years of "Don't vote for Stephen Harper" to see where it brought us 🙄
    Also, Mr. Oliver's writing staff should have dug into Pierre Trudeau's reputation in Canadian Politics a little bit more thoroughly - specifically the infamous "Trudeau Salute" to Western Canadians 😅
