one of the great things about the 90s samplers was introducing a whole new group of people to classics like this.

I was today years old when I learned who the original artist for this song is! I learned and played it on bass in my first band, in the late 1980s, so it's been a little while 🤣For some reason, I thought it was by Billy Joel, but I've never found the original until tonight, during a "conversation" with Bing Copilot, of all things.

For only being on a promo album, this is actually a pretty solid song.

I LOVE the whole promo album!! In truth, on that album they are likely ALL world class musicians of their day!! A guy at a stereo shop gave my brother and I a copy of this record in the 70's... we still use it today to play on various stereo systems and to enjoy the music, which has quite a few songs on that double album.
On "Captain America" there is the late Hoyt Axton, who wrote "Joy To The World" ("Jeremiah was a bullfrog...") and other great songs, singing lead on this. He was also an accomplished singer (country). They had Mike Botts (also passed away), the drummer from the group, 'Bread'. Just type that into UA-cam search and you'll easily land on many hit songs. On the album, they use "Captain America" to take listeners through the recording process of that era (many of the basics still apply today).
Finally, this was done at 'Capitol Records'... they had state-of-the-art recording facilities in the 70's, when this was done. (Somewhere on the record, they mention that studio time costs $30 per minute." ... in 1973 U.S. Dollars.) :)

Who would think that a demo recording of this would be used as the sample for a hit dance song?

That demo recording got me interested in recording overall. Fascinating for me as a kid, back in 1973!! 🙂

This was a very good demo (double) album. We - R.E.W. in Charing Cross Road, London - were JBL main dealers, so obviously had this provided by Bill Dyer of their UK distributors. This and the instrumental "Patriarch and Blind" were exceptionally good in themselves and as demo tracks.
If you have the latter, it would be well putting up.
