Rough Sleeper on the Dangerous Streets of Manchester

  • In the United Kingdom, a homeless person is referred to as a rough sleeper or someone sleeping rough. While a different term for homelessness and homeless people is used, it's still very much as horrible.
At the time of this interview, Peter had been sleeping rough in Manchester for four months. He had a flat (apartment), but he allowed a friend who was sleeping rough to stay. Peter was trying to help the man out. Peter learned from the police that his friend ripped the water boiler out and grew cannabis in the apartment. Peter ended up getting evicted.
Peter says it's the other homeless people you have to watch out for. The Spice epidemic has hit the UK. Spice (a synthetic cannabinoid) is a designer drug made with analogs or a chemical structure similar to commonly used illicit drugs. The composition of these products constantly changes as manufacturers create new variations to remain under the radar. The manmade chemicals are typically sprayed on a plant or herb (not marijuana) that is most commonly smoked and mimics the effects of the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana. Because it is marked as “not for human consumption,” the intended use is masked, and it is not subject to any quality control in manufacturing procedures or oversight that would be applied to other drugs. Spice is a cheap and dangerous high that has severe mental side effects.
Peter shares of a homeless person holding a needle to someone's neck to get money. When dealing with mental illness and addiction, normal rules don't apply, especially when someone is smoking Spice. While horrible situations like this happen, most homeless people are kind people just trying to survive horrible circumstances.
Peter survives by begging for money. Some charities help. Peter said Shelter gave him a phone the day before. Peter shares it's hard for outreach workers to find him when he doesn't have a phone.
Peter's wishes are simple: a place to stay, his son back in his life, and to never become homeless again. He shares that people look down at rough sleepers, or they don't even look at all. Homeless people are invisible in the United Kingdom, just like here in America.

    About Invisible People
There is a direct correlation between what the general public perceives about homelessness and how it affects policy change. Most people blame homelessness on the person experiencing it instead of the increasing shortage of affordable housing, lack of employment, childhood trauma, lack of a living wage, or the countless reasons that put a person at risk. This lack of understanding creates a dangerous cycle of misperception that leads to the inability to effectively address the root causes of homelessness.
We imagine a world where everyone has a place to call home. Each day, we work to fight homelessness by giving it a face while educating individuals about the systemic issues that contribute to its existence. Through storytelling, education, news, and activism, we are changing the narrative on homelessness.
This isn’t just talk. Each year, our groundbreaking educational content reaches more than a billion people across the globe. Our real and unfiltered stories of homelessness shatter stereotypes, demand attention and deliver a call-to-action that is being answered by governments, major brands, nonprofit organizations, and everyday citizens just like you.
However, there is more work to be done on the road ahead. Homelessness is undoubtedly one of our biggest societal issues today and will only continue to grow if we don’t take action now.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to educating the public about homelessness through innovative storytelling, news, and advocacy. Since our launch in 2008, Invisible People has become a pioneer and trusted resource for inspiring action and raising awareness in support of advocacy, policy change and thoughtful dialogue around poverty in North America and the United Kingdom.

Not being funny i know getting kicked out of a council flat is almost impossible, he's on drugs, and had a bunch of druggies in the flat growing cannabis using someone else's electricity, and will have ignored a lot of warnings.

@@VentureHolly Also from the rural midlands. There was no homeless people at all in the northants villages where I grew up. Long since moved to London and become densensitised to it, like everybody else. I think people on the tubes mostly understand and sympathise with the people begging but at the same time know that its not something to be encouraged there (especially because they dangerously cross between moving carriages), and that they could also be £20 - £30 out of pocket if they gave even £1 to every homeless person they see in a day. Not to mention that there are also a few charlatans out there, especially on the tube... Its all awful for the soul. I have donations set up for homeless charities, but tend to look away irl.

It's far worse in the states. At least in UK and here in Ireland all people at least receive social welfare. And there is a bed for everybody here in Ireland that wants one. Some choose to sleep rough instead. Many have chronic addictions. Bottom line is people have to want to improve themselves first and there is help thereafter.

We only have three well known homeless people living locally. One of them, an elderly man, died about a week ago. He froze to death sleeping outside the rugby club. Late sixties, carried all he owned in a rubbish sack tied to his old time bike.
He was ridiculed, criticised, people avoided him. The stigma killed him. The worst part is, barely anyone noticed. A week had lapsed by the time I found out. He was found by a lady walking her dog.
If he had a bed available to him for even just one night a week, he’d probably still be alive today.
Thanks for raising awareness for invisible people.

No one seems to know much about him. He just kept to himself as much as I was able to tell. He was very ragged looking, looked very unapproachable most of the time.
People did try to help him on occasion, but he was reluctant to accept help a lot of the time. I guess he didn't want to be a burden.
I really can't comment any further than that as I just didn't know him that well. I really only ever saw him while I was working so I never got a decent opportunity to ask him many questions.

I live in Detroit... the amount of empty houses and buildings is incredible... with a lot of them having deceased owners and literally in a probate limbo... the city demolishes them instead claiming they're fighting "blight". I see NO reason they can't put some of these people into these homes. Not only to be occupied, but also taken care of. I have been homeless, and thankfully, I had a vehicle to sleep in. I can definitely attest to the fact that all homeless people do not have drug and alcohol problems. They so often have full time jobs, kids, grandkids, a life. I have learned from experience, If you make less than 1k a month, like I do, landlords will not even consider you as a tenant. And the waiting list for housing (here in Wayne County Michigan) is TEN YEARS. COMPLETE BS.

They too had certain behavior which caused me to lose that place.
I believe that these folks often do not have full control over their behavior and that what they need is comprehensive, wrap-around help. One person with one modality of help is not enuf. They need a legit income and they need help with substance abuse and mental illness. Not Law Enforcement! Law Enforcement is not mental health care! This kind of help cannot be given by a municipality or govt. agency. It must come from the general population. If the gen pop doesn't care, the problem will not be solved.

I feel the main problem is substance abuse. I’m from Manchester and as a teenager I used to see many homeless people. I could tell then that most of them had issues regarding mental health and/or substance abuse. It made me realise that the person who can help you the most is yourself. That’s where real change begins. Help yourself and others will support you. That’s the beauty of humanity.

Peter is articulate and conveys his circumstances well, His friend took advantage and made him homeless, Hopefully he finds the help and support he needs to get his life back on track. Peter knows what he wants and seems to still have the hope and belief that his current predicament is only temporary this mindset slips away the longer you are unhoused. What a great update it would be if now Peter is housed and is involved in his sons life. Best Wishes to all those who find themselves unhoused and everyone working to END HOMELESSNESS.

When you think about it, homelessness, or rough sleeping, whatever you want to call it has been going on since the Victorian days where the poorer working class people either lived in absolute squalor for housing or slept rough on the streets. There was no national assistance in monetary terms back then, only soup kitchens. Fast forward to 2021 and the housing has got better with modernisation but too expensive for most people to rent, let alone buy. People with jobs and kids are still having to claim monetary assistance with Universal credit to help top up the minimum wage. Nothing has changed very much at all and I don't think it ever will.

B&B here in the U.K. means the same as in the States, there’s some that basically cater to the homeless in Cities and Towns but many in Holiday Spots are beautiful. I’ve been in many but I think the guy just got a little confused. There’s B&B’s in London, places like that, mainly seaside towns which a full of them. I’ve seen this gentleman a few times as I’m a Street Photographer from Manchester and when he says you have to watch out for the other homeless people and many that are just pretending to be homeless, yes there’s plenty of them but they know they can make a good living from begging, but, I mean “aggressive begging”. Not sitting with a cup on front of you hoping someone will even buy you a hot drink or food, which I prefer to do as I don’t want to give money to anyone that is just going to go to Piccadilly Gardens to pick up Spice.

    • @InvisiblePeople

@@InvisiblePeople The ones here aren’t really real B&B’s, like yours nearly all of them here are holiday accommodation but some popped up where because they are either unable or unwilling to upgrade the accommodation they can’t compete with the budget hotel chains so the only clients are the homeless. There are only one or two of these places though but there just isn’t the free hostel places available to cater for the growing homeless population

      @iamsaahilsingh Romans 8:18-39
      King James Version
18 For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.
19 For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God.
20 For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope,
21 Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.
22 For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now.
23 And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body.
24 For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for?
25 But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it.
26 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.
27 And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.
28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

Unless you run a shelter, you cannot always let people come and live with you. People with no responsibility take advantage of your hospitality. The guy was looking for a way to do something criminal and needed a place. I had to take in some one before, but my place had a one-week limit, so I didn't have to worry about people pleasing. But I also was homeless and had to live in shelters and with family, and I made sure to do right by the place and the people. This baby just breaks my heart. Peter was just trying to help a friend and got burned in the process.
