I still have my A3340s that I bought brand new in the 70's and it still works perfectly. I have had it serviced throughout the years drive idlers, capstan rollers, etc. I will never sell that deck!
The brakes are 'slow', but at least there's no overshoot. Before fixing my A77, I had to 'brake' one reel by hand so that overshoot didn't happen. Fantastic looking machine there - well done on restoring it. Only a true tape deck fan would do this!
Thank you. It took me hours to clean the deck and get all the tape shed off the heads and tape path. I think the brake bands have worn evenly. Not sure they can be dialed in any better than they are.
@@marcusdolby1 Really not sure if this applies to you, but I re-surfaced the brake pads on my Sony TC-645 R2R machine with a chamois leather strips on each brake - it Worked an absolute treat!!! Can't recall exactly what I did (I'd have to open it up again), but from memory I used double sided sticky tape which is supposed to be long lasting type. Time will tell of course, but this TEAC of yours is 1/2" tape - a lot more inertia to overcome when braking! Cheers!
Hey I just got one of these a month ago. I was wondering how to erase the tracks that I have recorded. Do I need a separate piece of equipment or can I erase from the machine. Thank you!
Hi Marc, I am about to buy a TEAC 80-8 from a guy who knows nothing about the deck. So I am going in blind. The price is right. Just wondering what problems I may be up against. He sent photos of it. All lights work. The body hasn't a mark on it. Looks like new. I made him a three figure offer... Under a grand. I have to drive 90 minutes to pick it up. I have a small home recording studio. Well, up to 16 musicians loaded... I have two other TEAC's 6010 and 3300. Both just aren't enough. Where are you located? If I have any issues, I'd love to work with you on any tough repairs, if necessary. I'll be glad to talk about what's up with it when I get it home.... Great video!
So apart from all the obvious checks, will it pull tape, FF, RW, are all the inputs working, are all the tracks recording, is the pinch roller gummed up, and are the VU meters all working? The one thing that many people miss with these is the sync head and electronics. If the sync function is not working on two or more tracks, which I have seen, then you won't be able to overdub on those tracks. The only way to test the sync is play prerecorded music on tape and put the deck in sync mode. I think its labeled monitor, or normal on this deck, check all 8 tracks to see if you hear playback on monitor and normal. Input should be checked as well. Hope it goes well for you, they are great decks when firing on all cylinders.
@@marcusdolby1 Hi Marc, OK, I got the 80-8 home. Everything seems to work fine. I haven't hooked it up to my mixing board yet, but it does go through all the functions, I played two different tapes in it, one with 4 tracks playing and VU meters were fine, the other is 8 tracks recorded and ALL VU Meters working fine. I ordered two sets of 8 track cords to hook up back and forth to my console/tape deck. How do recommend best cleaning methods for the tape heads? I could see they are a bit dirty from storage. It was kept nice and dry, so no corrosion on anything but a little on the stationary bar after the play head. I will clean that off and I believe it to be like new! Where are you located in case I am up for sending it to you for a physical examination and thorough cleaning/lube/operation check up. thanks Marc. Your videos are great man!!!

I have an 80-8 in good condition and I love it! I built custom rack mount ears for it. Nice machine! Cheers!
Very Nice, thanks for the run down!
Just picked up one of these along with the Dolby unit, all seems to work other than a loose wheel that needs tightening.
Brakes were just okay on these machines. Yours is working the same as mine.

Do you need to have outboard preamps, or are the internal preamps good for mic inputs?

Erase from the machine, make sure all potentiometers and knobs are turned all the way down to avoid preamp hiss.

Fun Fact: Nirvana's Bleach was recorded on 8 track reel to reel tape, like this one.

Nice demo. So I’m guessing you sold this unit?
