Willem Dafoe Talks Robert Eggers' Nosferatu & His Mustache and Sideburns

- Filmmaker Robert Eggers has made quite a name for himself in the horror sphere, absolutely dominating the folk horror subgenre over the last 10 years with everything from instant classics like The Witch to his recent Viking epic The Northman. And it doesn't look like he has plans to stop any time soon. Eggers' highly anticipated follow-up to The Northman is already in the works as he's preparing to take on the classic vampire tale, Nosferatu. This has been a passion project of Eggers for quite some time-he even told Collider nearly a decade ago that he'd been "obsessed with [Nosfaratu] since [he] was a little kid," and that it's something he'd like to do. Now the day has come, and he's already gotten a stacked cast for the project.
Recently, Collider's own Samantha Coley sat down with actor Willem Dafoe for his upcoming appearance in the psychological horror film Inside. During their conversation, Dafoe revealed that filming for Nosferatu is set to begin very soon. "This is why I have this mustache and [sideburns]" he told Collider, gesturing to his grown-out sideburns and distinguished mustache, continuing "because we're shooting now. I start in just a little bit."
While he couldn't reveal very many details about the upcoming vampire horror Dafoe shared high praise for director and screenwriter Eggers, explaining how their frequent collaboration began, saying:
"I just love working with Robert Eggers. I had a wonderful time. I saw The Witch, and I liked it so much. I arranged a meeting with him. We liked each other. Then I did The Lighthouse, which was a fantastic experience, and I think it's a very good movie. Then I did a little part in The Northman, which I really enjoyed, and now I get to do this. So I'm just happy to be back with him. It's Nosferatu, his version of Nosferatu. I'm just excited to be with him again. He's a great filmmaker, and I enjoy his company."

The fact it’s been Robert Egger’s passion project and he’s been trying to get it off the ground for years, tells me, his vision for the movie is strong, and only gotten stronger over time. Otherwise he would have just moved on to something else. We’re in for something special.

I lLOVE Robert Eggers films!!! He’s just got a way of story telling, artful direction style, you name it, he KILLS IT… Definitely one of my ALL TIME FAVORITE FILM MAKERS.
Kind of a funny, full-circle situation, considering Willem played Count Orlock in Shadow of the Vampire.
I've only seen Willem in a few interviews, only recently, and I'm so used to the dark and intense characters he plays that his upbeat demeanor surprises me. Hey, it's called "acting, dear boy".
I can't wait till I see what Bill Skarsgard looks like as Count Orlok.

Egger’s has dropped nothing but heat since 2015. Can’t wait for this film & the trailer was really well done not revealing the antagonist until we get to see him on the screen. Just helps the Suspense build up🔥 This will be a Great Film

Perfect casting! I’m really looking forward to it too. I’m a big fan of Robert Eggers movies. He’s made 3 up until now I believe, and I own 2 of them. The Witch was great, but not quite worth purchasing for me as yet. Mind you if this upcoming movie is as good as I’m expecting, and makes me want to purchase it (when available to do so) I might just add The Witch as well, to complete the collection. Like I’ve pretty much already done with Tarantino’s movies.

What interests me is are they going to use the name orlock or dracula because the remake in the 70s called him dracula
If they wanna do it right, it needs to be Orlok. They need to bring back all the original character names.
They are calling him Orlok. By the time Werner Herzog made his remake in 1979, Bram Stoker's novel had entered the public domain, so there was no risk of them being sued for copyright infringement like the makers of the original were and they were allowed to use the original character names from the novel. But now the original Nosferatu has entered the public domain, so the characters will have the same names that they had in that movie.

No, Bill Skarsgård is playing Count Orlok. Willem is playing a character called Professor Albin Eberhart Von Franz, who wasn't in the original but from his name I'm guesting he's this movie's version of Van Helsing.
dafoe has turned into meme man in his old age and is getting annoying.
