    Charlie, your video work is outstanding. BBC eat their heart out.
    If you visited in 1910, you could have stayed at the observatory hotel at the summit for 10 shillings, with a hearty cooked breakfast served by 2 ladies for an extra 3 shillings.
    In Sep 1977, I spent the night in the shelter, just to say I spent the night at the summit. Windy but not cold. In your video it is a mess, was not then.

      @@charliemccartney7055 No need to reply Charlie, but it was also a meteorological station and frequented by scientists. Visitors were welcome. Of course in those days there was nothing like the craze in hillwalking as now. Moreover much of the land was private and not open to the public. The shelter is on top of what remains of the hotel. The track up the west of Ben Nevis is the pony track, and literally supplies were carried to the top on ponies.

    An interesting route, Charlie, that, despite all the time we lived in Fort William, we never did!! Am I right in saying that the route up beside the waterfall is known as the 'Waterslide' ? If it is then it was the location of a number of accidents in my day back in the 1980s. I can certainly see the attraction of this route over the walk in from the North Face park which is an interminable slog. The ascent beside the waterfall, even if it is rather steep and lengthy, is at least on grass compared to the extensive very stony and bouldery ground higher up on the Ben and the ridge. Maybe my memory is fading, but I always felt the arête was narrower that it looks on your video. I seem to remember a reasonably level section little wider than a brick wall !! Great video with lots of detail new to me.

    • @charliemccartney7055
      @charliemccartney7055  Рік тому

      Hi Ian, Yes, that's the Waterslide route. We've used it a few times and cuts out the pain of the track, along with the crowds. I've always thought its better with semi-ridged or ridged boots help things along.
      There is a couple of sections on the ridge that need care with drops either side, although, mainly to the north. It isn't a problem in these conditions but a different proposition if banked up with snow. A very enjoyable day... Cheers, Charlie
