As a clarinet player, the fact that all of us in our school band got to practically solo this with our guest soprano sax player along with the bits and chunks the other played with us in our Christmas concert makes this one of my favorites.

    It actually has lyrics.
    Whispers in a dream
The world is quiet and waiting
And all around the air is still
    And sings the angels
When all is come to pass
The storm has breathed it's last
    And the rain
    Has washed our fears away
    Love will find
    Whispers in the wind
The clouds part to let the light in
And all around the people sigh
As birds take to the sky
When all is come to pass
The storm has breathed it's last
    And the rain
    Has washed our fears away
Love will fall on us all
    The world will smile again
    Whispers in a dream
The world is quiet and waiting
And all around the air is still
    Then sings the angels
When all is come to pass
The storm has breathed it's last
    And the rain
    Has washed our fears away
Love will fall on us all
    And we can smile again

I absolutely dislike the fact that: a) the piece has been transposed from D to Bb, b) the solo lines have been "dumbed down" - no quintuplets or other freely expressible rhythms, only straight sixteenths or eighths, and c) the arranger decided to end the piece in a tutti chord. It's so frustrating. Just about every arrangement for mid-level wind band. It all feels sooo dumbed down - "by god, please no sharps, triplets are the oddest rhythms we can offer, and let's make sure everyone is constantly playing". It's about everything that is wrong with modern day easily digestible wind band arrangements. And I hate it so much.

    • @classicalcaroline9122
      @classicalcaroline9122 10 місяців тому

it’s in the key of b flat because it’s easier for the oboist as well as the band to play as this arrangement is meant for a middle school band or maybe even a young high school band. if the oboist does their job, they can make the solo part as expressive as they want meaning they don’t have to play rhythms exactly how they’re written. it’s called being musical and is quite hard for a young musician to do. the super fast runs in the beginning of the orchestral version we’re taken out because again, this is meant for a young band.

I understand the argument, and I probably feel a little too personal about it. The problem for me is that I play in an amateur wind orchestra (not school band), and it seems that publishers set extremely limiting restrictions to composers who want to publish for bands like ours. It makes every arrangement look, feel and sound like any other - which is good for conductors knowing what to expect, but bad for the orchestra in the long run. Avoiding sharps or complex rhythms not only strips the original piece of music of its musicality, but also kind of instills a limiting belief of what musicians (especially young musicians) can and cannot do. I'm of the strong belief that we should expose them to more variety, otherwise this belief will be further intensified (and I guess justified if no one wants to move out of their comfort zone).
