Namaste everyone! Foreigner here! I've been to Bharat 12 times in this lifetime, from north to south. I've been to 7 of the 12 Jyotirlingas, from Kedarnath to Rameshwaram. Also, I have visited 4 of the 5 Panchabhoota Sthalams, been Arunachaleshwara my dearest one. For the first time in so many years I have found a simple but well explained information on the worship of Shiva in Bharat. Having been to so many Shiv temples, I have had the chance to witness the striking difference between north and south Shaivism. Now I have a better understanding on how and why things are done in Shiv temples throughout Bharat.
Thanks for this documentary, it is a very much needed topic, mostly as "yoga" has spread it wings in a global way and most people don't have a clue on the true roots of Yoga.

Yes. True Siva yoga is different from many yoga ways at present. These different sadhanas including sankya will not liberate a soul except Shiva Yoga as explained in Shiva agamas and Thirumanthiram will give Swarupya mukthi.
And in the name of Sri Arunachaleshwara, being a Tiruvannamalaian, I welcome you to my hometown.

Yes... Siddhar tradition goes beyond spiritual... They literally show practical steps to approach spirituality. Like literal practical. How to meditate, what to focus on, modes and methods of breathing to attain Jeeva Samadhi, etc. For North Indians, they can search for "Jeeva Samadhi". There is 1 entire village in Tamil Nadu focusing on experimenting with Spirituality through Jeeva Samadhi as their goal... I seem them as emerging as a higher conscious species than humanity. Maybe there are such research based spiritual villages in North India or other states too. We need more spiritual networking so that we do not miss out great ideas from everyone!

From vaidika worship to tantra upasana, from vamachara to dakshinachara... From asta lakshmis to dasa mahavidyas from worshipping women as swayam shakti.. The controller or trinity ( bramha, vishnu, shiva) to controlling women from upanayana samskaram.. Even not allowing to chant them pranava - Om. This diverse path of exploring devine demands extreme research and proper presentation,, will be expecting one detailed documentary on devine mother atleast before navaratri 2024 ;)

Tamil Saivam is not just bhakti oriented, addressing common person's devotional needs. While it encompasses this path of bhakti, it has its own esoteric, gnaana path as well. Tirumular's Tirumandiram is one such example of this esoteric attribute of Tamil Saivam.

The video is right at its place . But one of the prominent ways to connect Shiva in North India is also Bhakti .
Here in North India we listen to songs and Bhajan of Shivan . And visit the Shrines like Kashi , Jyotirling , Amarnath... .
I as an North Indian really loved the way Thamizhians preached Shivabhakti .
      { Special Thanks to @Mere Shiv }
And talking about the tantra . Some Buddhists mixed the panchamakar in tantra . And people started associating Tantra with Tona Totka .
Therefore in the name of worship and rituals , sadhak started harassing women and girls , and started doing Animal Sacrifices ... .
As a result Maa Kamakhya has left the Shaktipeeth . In the previous year the Brahmputra river didn't even get red after Ambubachi Parv .
And in this year's Ambubachi Parv , Maa Kamakhya has totally resided in Karauli Shankar Mahadev Dham , Kanpur .
But here in spite of seeing how one culture is different from the other , we should see how it is interconnected ( ex. Varna System )

First of all, Wonderful documentary!!! I like to add some thing here after watching the whole episode. You see these two Shaivism you narrated- Kashmir and Tamil, I don't see them as different types of Shaivism, but a continuation of same philosophy in different context. You see Tamil Shaivism is more into temple, music, rituals - a common man world as you correctly pointed out - however you can also see that as means of worshipping Shiva using the material/body senses. On the other had Kashmir Shaivism is more for the intellectual mind or should we understand as when a Sadhak leaves the material desire and move inwards s/he has to practise Kashmir Shaivism. So you see a Sadhak starts with Tamil Shaivism, by going to temples and following rituals and later as Sadhak moves spiritually end up doing Kashmir Shaivism. Just as Kundali moves from bottom - Muladhar to Top - Shashtrar - Tamil Sangam form the bottom of Bharata (Muladhaar - hence refered also in the name - Tiru-Mular) to Kashmir Shaivism which forms the top of Bharata (Shashtrar). Therefore you see these two Shaivism is not different but a continuous stream of knowledge from bottom to Top of Bharata.

It takes care of first 4 steps of Ashtanga yoga
    Yum
    Niyum
    Asan
    Pranayam
And the kashmir shaivism is the culmination of the 4 in to the later 4
    Of
    Pratyahar
    Dharn
    Dhyan
And finally Samadi ( becoming on with shiva, shifting from SaGuna to NirGuna)
The beauty of this path is even if on takes only single step and explores it in its fullest even then they lead to Shiva..like Nrutya..if one masters it..he will get the darshan of Natraja form of Shiva..so beautiful 😍😍😍😍

Great work my friend, just want to bring certain things to your and others attention:
    1. We are currently in the year 5100 and we have a running calendar/ Panchanga/ Almanac since all these years.
    2. Some of the Rishis are:
    Kashyap Rishi
    Kalhana Pandit - Historian
    Patanjali - Yoga Shastras
    Bharat Muni - Dance/ Music
    Panini- Grammar / Literature
    Shushrata- Medicine/ Surgery

    And many others
It would be interesting to do research about them and others

    Dr. Vedam,
Thing to note is that like how agama shastras were adopted in the north and east; yantras were adopted and are a main place, especially in the Smarta traditions. Influences of tantra are also plenty; especially in places like Thiruvannamalai. Furthermore tantric vidya traditions developing for householders is certainly an influence of this confluence; and so is the work of the great Vidyaranya Swami which uses Tantric influences toward Vedantic pursuits (at least Advaita).
Today these traditions mostly do not stand by themselves; almost everything has become composite. So I'm not sure calling them distinct is fair.
But Thank you so much for this video. A very useful exercise in reclaiming our collective heritage!

    My few cents
Based on my limited knowledge of Tamil Shaivism i would say it covers almost all aspects of Bhakti, yoga, karma and Gyana in an elaborate manner and has dvaita and advaita aspects in different places
For example take kumbhabhishekam (temple consecration process) which is done for temples (built based on specific agama) every 12 years, it deals with the deities energy. Look at the yagasala structure and the yagya done. It contains mantras, tantra, yantra and other geometric structures related to the deity and its energy. The kalakarshana ritual deals with bringing life and energy to the idol with related mantras and nyasas
The sivachariyars who are involved has to do saiva anushtana , shiva Pooja, boothashuddhi etc daily and it covers yoga, pranayama, mantra, Bhakti and many of the tantras in Vigyana Bhairava tantra in a much more elaborate manner. These are part of aathmartha puja which has to done by sivachariyars before doing parartha Pooja (temple and other Pooja done outside). Basically to build the shivoham bhavana and be one with shiva before doing temple Pooja
The one thing I find very interesting in Kashmiri saivisam is spanda. Based on my understanding it is part Nataraja statue in his right arm holding a dhamaru which creates both vibration and sound symbolising creation. I am trying to see how this aspect is covered in any of the saiva agamas or saiva siddanta

My God. What the author has not even mentioned the right name of Tamilnadu Saiva tradition which is Saiva siddhantha which is based exactly on Gnana patala of Siva agamas. TN Saiva religion is not limited only with Bhakthi. It includes Bhakthi, Tamil pann (music), Bharata natyam Dance, Service to God and Shiva Devotees, Yoga, elaborate Tantric poojas both in Temples (Parartha) as well as in home (athmartha) along with Mantra, mudra after attaining due Siva deeksha. All the four ways of attaining mukthi i.e Charya, Kriya, Yoga ang Jnana are very well explained, followed by devotees still. Debate scriptures such as Sivagnana Botham and Sivagnana siddhiyar and this list is very big. Sivagnana siddhiyar clearly explains the Pasupatha Saivam's principles and refutes how it has misunderstood Siva agama and how Saiva siddhantha clearly is based on Agamas. Only these Tamil literatures explain what is real meaning of Shivoham and Shivoyam brahmasmi.
TN is blessed with Adi Saiva Sivachariya lineage who are down to earth from God SadaSiva's five faces. So much to tell. The author has said very little. Saiva siddhantha is atop of all religions viz Pasupatha Saivam, Pancharatra vaishnavam.

Very wrong informative. Agami/Tantric texts are from the mouth of Supreme God Siva for the sake of Anava mala paripaka of all His devotees across Bharat. Not confined oly to Tamil, Kapaalika, Kashmir or other schools of Shaivism.
Kashmir Saivam is confined only to yoga path. Very selected texts. Very limited literatures. Unaware of Siva agama in right sense.
But Tamil Saiva siddhantha comprises all the four paths to salvation.
    1.Charya - Salokya mukthi - Appar
    2. Kriya - Samipya mukthi - Sambandhar
    3.Yoga - Saarupya mukthi - Sundarar, Thirumoolar
    4.Jnana - Saayujya mukthi - Manikkavasagar
In addition, Tamil Saivam includes pure bhakthi with poem, dance and music.
But this documentary portrays Kashmir Saivam is more philosophical than Tamil Saivam.
The Kashmir's Pasupatha Saivam is almost similar to Tamil Saiva siddhantha except the difference in status of Mukthi. In Kashmir saivam, the mukthanma (liberated soul) becomes independent, omniscient, omnipotent and all pervasive.
Whereas in Tamil Saivam, the mukthanma is always dependent to Shiva. Soul's limited knowledge and actions become omniscient and omnipotent but it cannot do Panchakritya (Srushti, Sthithi, Sankaram, Thirobavam, Anugraham) like Shiva. Soul will be trikala jnani (past present future) until it is merged with Shiva in Paramoksha named Sayujya moksha. If atman is unmerged, its knowledge will be limited once again. But it is said that once if an atma merges with Siva never reverts. So the mukthi is blissful.

@@VijayKumara-dd2nt Brother these are not fights but debates which lasted for very very long period in Bharat. Nothing about dishonor. Speaking truth is important. So I just put forward what is not said by author.
I have respect for many documentaries of Project Shivoham.
I wish the author could have atleast taken reference from Thirumanthiram, Sivagnana Botham and Sivagnana siddhiyar. Because people started thinking Tamil Shaivam just has bhakthi, dance and temple rituals but do not have higher philosophy. Is it true??

This is what happens when you have a ridiculously miniaturized understanding of SHIVA and the integral TATVA! Brazen erratic and misleading info in this video:
    (1) Shaivism of South India need not mean Shaivism of Tamilnadu alone. Stop extrapolating the Tamilnadu hegemony onto the rest of South India. The tradition of VEERASHAIVA is older than the Tamil culture and it originated in Karnataka. Even today, the Acharyas or Peetadhipatis who head the most importanat and oldest Shiva shrines of KEDAR PEETHA in the Himalayas, and KASHI PEETHA in Varanasi and in the Pashupatinatha temple in Nepal are VEERASHAIVAS from the North Karnataka region. This practice is in existence since millennia. There isn't a single example of a Tamil Shiva Acharya being chosen as the Chief Acharya of any of the most prominent Shiva Shrines in North India and abroad. Therefore, Shaivisim in the South has its roots in Karnataka and it's only in later periods that Tamilnadu inherited that Shaivsim from Karnataka. Apparently, you have very narrow understanding of the oldest scriptures written on Shaivism in Karnataka. Even the Shaivism in Kerala and Andhra region has its own roots. So, stop this nonsense of extending the Shaivism of Tamilnadu as that of entire South India's.
    (2) Kashmir Shaivism is not all about only esoteric or tantric denominations and isn't lacking in Bhakti principle. Again, your myopic understanding of these intricate aspects leads to such callous conclusions. The very word 'Agama' has a deep connotation of Tantric traditions. Then, what's Tantric tradition? Put simply, Tantric tradition means anything and everything that assigns a definite form to the DEVA or DEVI and indulges in severe penance. All the statues, murtis, temples etc are a direct result of Tantric traditions. This word Tantric is by far the most wrongly interpreted word. Some idiots ascribe the regressive blackmagic or witchcraft practices to ancient Hindu Tantric traditions. The Kashmir (or the Northern side of India) had many Shiva temples. So, your assertion that Shaivism in Southern part is more of Bhakti oriented and that of North is esoteric in essence is as ridiculously hopeless as the situation of those each blind persons who go on to describe the elephant as the part of its whole body - none being aware of its complete structure and each thinking it to be what they touched on its body. That's the exact position of yours. Learn to get a more comprehensive view by reading diverse scriptures before making sweeping generalizations.
    (3) Whether Kashmir or any Southern part of India, the Shiva worship has its roots in the Rig Veda itself. Particularly, out of the 10 mandalas, the oldest mandalas of 2 to 7 give foundational directions. All of the Agamic texts and other scriptures such as Puranas take those elements and make some modifications so as to make the cryptic Vedic verses become more easy to relate with ordinary lives of common people. That means, there's no such thing as Northern Shaivism or Deccan Shaivism. All Shaivism has originated from the Vedas of the Vedic epoch of IVC. Hence, it is SHAIVISM of BHARAT that would be the right way to put it. Minor ritualistic differences are just a case of diverse perception and not of distinct segregation into two or more groups as you have done in your video. SHIVA is the greatest unifier of our ancient land of Bharat. Try not to make glaikit videos that would potentially mislead the unsuspecting folks into thinking that there's a religious disconnect between the North and the South. Adi Shankara precisely fought this menace during his lifetime by indulging in Shastrarthas (philosophical duels) with those who thought there is BHEDA or discord in the way Shiva-Tatva is understood across our Nation of Bharat.
Lastly, refrain from making sweeping generalizations on issues where diverse perceptions of the same Tatva or Philosophy such as SHIVA-TATVA do exist and they need not warrant any compartmentalization into geographic divides by branding them as North Shaivism and South Shaivism. HE, SHIVA is ONE whether it's North or South or East or West.
Adhere to this SHIVA-TATVA - That's the essence of Bharat's religious identity.
    Om Namaha Shivaya 🕉

Looking at your comment shiva himself Will feel upset ..
The narrator just gave the difference between kashmiri Shaivisim and Tamil Shaivisim...no where he mentioned about other south Indian tradition or any hegemony or supermacy...
And looking at your comment 🤣 only one thing is evident low esteem....
How is veerashiva is older than Tamil culture????? Could you please explain...
The concept of veerashiva is evident only after 8th century A.D...
Tamil Shaivisim is from 5th century A.D ..and Tamil shaiva Siddantha is the most prominent shaiva tradition from south India that spread across globe. ..
Check iraivan temple in Kauai UAS. And south east Asian countries ...if you want to sum up veerashiva could have gentle add up instead showed your regional hatred .
      Shame on you...

@@ProjectShivoham In simple terms: What makes you call the practice of Shaivism in all southern states as Tamil Shaivism? Is Tamil a term that represents entire South India? Between 1.45 to 2.10 TL you say that explicitly that when you say Tamil Shaivism you mean the Southern region of geography and NOT Tamilnadu alone. Really? That's plain wrong. If you want to explain the Shaivism of Tamilnadu then do so but DO NOT equate entire South India to Tamilnadu. Practice of Shiva-Tatva can't be regionalized like that.
IN EVEN MORE SIMPLE TERMS: SHAIVISM IN SOUTHERN STATES HAS ITS OWN ESSENTIAL IDENTITY WITH EVERY SOUTHERN STATES. DO NOT EQUATE IT WITH ANY ONE PARTICULAR STATE.
      {P.S: Some comments below think it's about 'Regional hatred' etc. I can only wish them speedy recovery. When logical thinking and rationality are in stark absence, such chauvinistic comments are all but natural.}

Thank you for creating this video. Your efforts are always enlightening! In the following paragraphs I would like to express my view on the essence of Shiva-Shakti in our life.
Here is the scientific as well as the philosophical reason why we have such a reverence for Shiva-Shakti. According to Saivat philosophy Shiva is the creator and is represented by a bindu that is formless or has no attributes. In the philosophy of Gita, he is GUNATIT! Shiva is an unexpressed form or Purusha, and Shakti, the divine feminine principle is his other half, a dynamic presentation of the universe. Shakti literally means ENERGY. According to biochemical science we know that we human beings derive energy by metabolizing food through cellular processes. The end stages of this energy formation take place in subcellular organelles called MITOCHONDRIA. These organelles in human beings are derived from mother only. Father does not contribute mitochondria at the beginning of life. Hence, no matter what we do, it is the feminine Shakti, in the dynamic form in the universe that allows us to enjoy and appreciate the world! This emphasizes our understanding of Shakti which is so ancient! It also tells us that every day is Mother’s Day!
    Shankara’s text Soundarya Lahari:
Shivah Shaktya yukto yadi bhavati Shaktah prabhavitum
Na chedevam devo na khalu kushalah spanditumapi |
    Atah tvam aradhyam Hari-Hara-Virinchadibhir api
Pranantum stotum vaa katham akrita-punyah prabhavati ||
    - Soundarya Lahari 1
Joined with Shakti(thyself), Lord Shiva is capable of creating the Universe.
Otherwise, the Lord is not be able even to stir.
You are worthy of being adored even by Lord Vishnu, Lord Shiva and Lord Brahma.
O Goddess! without acquiring great merits, how can a person be able to salute you?
If you have a better reference to the creation of the universe according to Saivat philosophy, please send it to me.
