  • Working on reactivity. What happens when we get off lead dogs running into our space and how to deal with it.
A few things to set our stall out. I do not take unnecessary risks with my clients, their dogs, the public or their dogs. There is an element of risk in everything we do, from crossing the street to driving our cars. We mitigate that risk through dynamic risk assessment, preparation and training. The dog we are working with lunges and barks at other dogs, there is no known bite history.
In the video, a young off lead dog comes into our space, then brings the older dog in as a result. Our client does an amazing job of dealing with it. We didn't set it up, but we can learn from it.
No, this is not ok. Yes, in an ideal world the other fella would have had a better recall of his young dog. No body died, nobody was injured, nobody went to the hospital, no one needed first aid. Not human nor dog. We are dealing with feelings, maybe hurt feelings but feelings nonetheless.
Would shouting at the other dog guardian help? Would telling him his dog should be under control help? Would berating him help? No. Do you not think he knows better than anyone else he made a mistake? Of course. So we need to let it go. This takes work and I've not always been able to do it. I learned. You can too.
If we shout at the other man, he feels more embarrassed, more upset, more angry. And who bears the brunt of that? His dog. And his dog isn't at fault. Se we let it go for his dogs' sakes.
If we shout at the other man, our dog learns we get upset when other dog's approach, and calm down when they leave. So they lunge and bark more in order to get the dog to go away, classical conditioning (learning by association in action).
We move. we handle the lead. We brought this dog into the park, we take our share (and even perhaps more) of the responsibility. It takes work to do this, but we do it for this dog.
If you need help recalling your dog, like the retriever, or of you need help dealing with reactivity like the Romi, these courses will help.
Bulletproof focus builds a dog who attends to you, it's a bargain at £12.97 (~US$16.50)

The Triangle of Trust course builds on that and has our fully comprehensive recall, loose lead walking and aggression/reactivity courses, at £77 (~US$97)

Lastly, please don't comment along the lines of "I hate when other people can't recall their dogs" or similar. We all know, no one likes it. It only adds to the culture of blame and our dogs suffer as a result.

This was the greatest I’ve ever seen and I have a question. Will you keep working with this dog so we can see that this method works I don’t like it when people show things and then they don’t bring that back ever again even if it takes a year we’d like to see that this does work thank you.

I understand that people might not like it but my responsibility is to my clients, they allow me to educate using their dogs through these videos. Dog training can be expensive and it would be ridiculous to ask someone to pay for weekly sessions so that people can satisfy themselves with free content online. I equip my clients with the tools to train their dogs, and there are tonnes of videos on this channel which show the various stages, just with different dogs.
I know that it works because I've been doing it successfully for 17 years.
