My dog is also reactive to guests coming into the house or even onto the yard. (He's a very good guard dog and takes his job seriously) My job is to teach my dog to turn it off on command. We are still working on it but he's slowly getting better. I have found it helpful to have guests alert us when they've arrived so that I could put my dog in his crate with leash on because he just gets too excited. After guests have arrived, Georgie stays in his crate until he has calmed down. (No more barking and lying down) after he's calmed down I walk him with leash and hand to where he can see the guests. If he gets too excited we keep distance. After he calms down, He's allowed to sniff the guests while the guests all ignore him. After he gets to know the guests he starts to get comfortable and guests get to give him treats but I always advise not to stop and stare into his eyes for too long as it makes him nervous. He's been doing great. I'm a musician so I have jams and rehearsals at my house a couple times a week. We've been going through the whole routine but the routine is getting shorter and shorter and now 5 minutes into rehearsals he's lying on the floor chewing on a bone. Yay!! It's a process but consistency pays off.

I love that he is firm with the dog. I think a guest who is being growled and barked at would also be more at ease if they saw the owner reacting like this and correcting the behavior. Unfortunately many people don’t really know what to do and actually pet praise and feed dogs treats while they growl and show aggressive behavior, expecting that it will calm them but it actually reinforces the behavior.

I have a dog in my families house that belongs to my brother and sister n law. She's a very sweet dog and was given up by a friend of theirs. She has severe separation anxiety that has gotten worse over the years. She also barks at every single person who approaches the house, walks on the deck, walks sometimes out of a room, or if she hears something outside at a neighbors house. She barks at my family or anyone she knows who comes onto the deck/walks into the house. She likes getting to know new people but seems super intimidating if you don't know her. Her hair is one end and she goes stiff initially and her barking even sounds very aggravated? I don't know how to explain but we love her to pieces. I do know exercise and also probably some other things could help her. They have tried a vibrating collar it only worked for so long, they tried saying no, be quiet and every time she is quiet when someone approaches which is SUPER rare, I do praise her for being chill. I just am wondering what other options could we do?

What about a dog who does not pay attention to treats/commands when the guest is over? I've had my two dogs ignore anything I give them when I managed to keep them sitting and quiet for a few seconds before they bark again. As long as a guest is in the house they don't want treats and will even ignore my recalls even though they are otherwise good with that.

The lifting of both hands to show that she did not have a treat was what started the snapping. I train all my dogs to become accustomed to people just reaching out at their faces and grabbing them gently by the mussel. It's a game to them. No one likes strangers just reaching for their faces. Dogs are no different. I have also found that sending my dog over to a stranger to be fussed greatly comforts the anxious dog who is unsure of others.

And we live in a condo where pets aren’t allowed ( well, before. But now they already allow it. But I still feel anxiety whenever someone knocks at the door.) that’s why I always freak out when someone’s knocking at the door. I believe that he felt my anxiety whenever there’s a stranger so up until now, he barks when there’s a visitor. But that’s all he does. Bark. And I feel guilty about that because I’m the reason that he’s like that. Now it’s time to correct things. Again, thank you for this.

When it comes to people coming over to our home theres always the opening barking fit until we get her to relax. Weve tried treats and crating. A good technique is to get the stranger to throw the treats behind the dog, so then the dog can approach for another repetition. Rather than the dog remaining too close to the stranger for too long in one sitting, that is why Lupo started to react. It was too much.

Actually what is interesting is that there was a study on this matter and what was conclude is that reactive dog toward poeple can not be reinforced with snack. They found that after the dog has received the snacks it is still try to lanch at the poeples. Michael Ellis talked about that as well. Interesting to investigate that further.

My doberman does this specifically with men. If a man comes to the door or walks in the house, he is hackles up charging the door. Once they come in, he's hiding behind me, barking with hackles up. If they make any move like they want to get closer, sometimes, he pees. I would say he acts like that with 85% of the men who come into my house. Still to this day, he wants to like my dad when he comes over but cowers anytime a movement is too fast. This has been for the entire 3.5 years that I have had him since he was 8 weeks. I can't even have the damn plumber come over.

Outside in public, he's fine with strangers, it's just when at home or settled with the family somewhere. This is the kind of dog that I would likely hand his leash over to the stranger as soon as they barked/growled. (obviously not with a bite history or serious concerns over biting). Then the stranger would walk the dog and ask for a sit or some type of obedience. That and or 2 leashes on the dog, one in your hand and you hand her one as well. Is there a reason you would not use this method?

Yes totally, same issue! She’ll bark even when they’re at a distance and nowhere near the car. Sometimes I think it’s boredom and the barking gives them something to do while they’re in the car.

Great information! I can use this with my puppy schnauzer but what do I do when she barks on walks? She barks at dogs and people because she excited and wants to meet them. If I let her meet them she's happy to get the attention so I know she's not aggressive. Please suggest one of your videos thanks

What I do on walks if I see another dog approaching I will pre-warn my Pitt mix saying 'No barking. We're walking nice..' (repeat several times) cuz she will also lunge and want to meet the dog. This works great as long as the other dog doesn't bark and lunge, she will most times keep walking nice right past them. Still working on it.

2:35 I'm wondering if he took her open-hand gesture as some form of aggression. Which is why he barked. Still not okay. Or maybe he was just pissed she was all out of treats. 😁

Thanks, I'm assuming this method would work with a nervous dog who is also overly friendly with people coming in to the house..ie, barking at first then rushing the door for attention...is it possible that they will start associating the correction with people visiting the house and in turn think that people visiting is a bad thing? Would it be best to remove the dog from the living room and bring in on leash once guests are in, taking it back into the other room every time it tries to rush in ahead of me in an excited state? Thanks

How do you deal with smaller dogs when it comes to them not wanting to take the tree at all like my experience is that my dog has so much fear about this person who has been coming to the house consistently for years, but my small dog still alerts for like five minutes and then doesn’t understand and he won’t send. I should preface it’s a handy man and family friend, but strangers he’s fine with

I wish this was how my dog reacted. It’s like holding back a dinosaur! I don’t get many visitors but she even goes crazy when she sees the people we see everyday in and around our apartment building. I just recently got some spray called pet corrector and it seems to have gotten better. Because me telling her to sit wasn’t working, promise of treat wasn’t working, the Caesar technique of tsss-poke, tap wasn’t working, the prong collar, the slip lead, none of that.

How do you do this in your home when your dog is not on a leash?

  • @pattyedzards8587
    @pattyedzards8587 2 роки тому +2

When you say huh huh or sit down the dog responds to you. My dog ignores commands at times like this. He is bad when people walk, run, skate, or bike past the house or yard. So its random and cannot be staged to work on. Working on obedience more. He knows commands, but doesn't follow them when riled up.

Do the same he does with the dog when isn't paying attention. Literally you have to turn your dog with your knee and pulling the leash at the same time, and direct his face to you. Maybe that is useful. Obviously this has to be whereas (or before) a skater, runner, biker, etc. passes you.
Hope you fix your dog. Also, I recommend you to learn the body language of dogs in order to know what is your dog's real problem.

I’m at a lost place atm I tried everything, it’s made me mad in the past. Which I know isn’t the right approach. I don't know how will I train my dog. It's weird because she only gets aggressive when someone knocks into my room (in which she also sleeps with me) or when someone comes, or even just passed by the door outside, she'll get really aggressive and keeps on barking :/ but when she's outside my room, she doesn't react at all and even wants to be pet with by my family members.

My dog is 8 months old. He used to bark at everything as a puppy. Literally sound of door, drawers opening, any sound. From exposing him to all those things that make him bark, now he's pretty much okay with things and other dogs.
He barks at people though, he doesn't bark at everyone. When we are walking he doesn't bark. At home he keeps barking at the same people, who work in my house. Is this bored barking?
Also when I am driving, and the car stops (at a gas station, parking lot), he barks at anybody approaching the car.
I am glad I have been able to cure 90% of the barking but I want to know how I can find out what causes him to bark. He also seems to bark more when I am around, so it's either fear or guarding thing.
As a side note, I live in a majority moslem country, and they are not allowed to touch dogs. I think this is one of the reasons. Because of them avoiding him trying to sniff, he gets suspicious?

A sign that this dog hasn't been acclimated towards other people? I hope it doesn't bite a stranger.

my dog barks as soon as he hears a vehicle pulling up outside and people getting out of it, even next door at the neighbors. He goes on guard when anyone who isnt my mother, my sister, or myself come through the front door, even my aunt who lives with us he'll bark at her when she comes back from going somewhere. At one point he started nipping at people we've let into the house when they get too close to my mother so ive resorted to getting a muzzle for when he gets to that point. he's completely fine with them if they are outside but once they come inside he's all "how dare you trespass into my domain".
