I have a PTR-91 there are things you can do to improve accuracy especially with that trigger. You can send the trigger pack out to Bill Springfield. It's 60 bucks, your trigger pack will have a pull of roughly 4.5 to 5 lbs. Which is average, heck of a lot better than the stock trigger. I'd also get an enhanced recoil buffer and a muzzle break. That will take out a good bit of the PTR-91's bite. PTR-91's like federal premium 168gr match. At least mine does. It will do 1 MOA with match ammo and the mods.

G3 Typ rifles are made to shoot 145-150 grain bullets.
Heavy bullets will inrcrease the wear onthe gun.
I have a MKE T41, a turkish made G3 Clone, these rifles love cheap steel case ammo.
PPU and GGG have exelent m80 ball ammo, sub MOA is possible.

I have a PTR-91 GI in black. One of the most important things I wish you had mentioned is the fluted chamber, which helps make this rifle absolutely reliable. I like the slim handguard that the rifle came with as it feels like I can really grip the rifle, I never liked "fat" feeling rifles. The rifle is very rough on the brass (makes it challenging to reload) and ejects it out more than twenty feet or more. I reload ammo for all my rifles (M1 Garand, M1A Springfield, M1917 Winchester). I do not use scopes, I only sight in at 200 yards (I know my limits) using silhouette targets only. Great review overall. Semper Fi (68 to 72/MOS 0351).

Howard, my hunting and fishing buddy has owned an HK-91 since the early 80s. He decided to shoot the NRA high power course with it one Saturday morning, right after he bought it and sighted it in.
He shot a terrible score, I can't remember what it was, exactly. He is normally an excellent high power match shooter but due to the trigger and the short LOP (he is tall, with long arms and neck, like me), he was all over the target (and beyond!) that morning. Also, shooters that were 6-8 stations to his right were complaining of hot brass hitting them.
The next morning, he had a bruise over his right cheek bone from the rear stock banging his face. After that fiasco, he went back to his M-1 rifle for the NRA course! Semper Fi, TreeTop

A lot of people consider the G3 to be the "AK47" of battle rifles. I tend to agree given that even though they are heavy and not ergonomically the fastest they can put up with a lot of abuse and keep shooting. I find the lack of a gas system to be a nice quirk of the delayed blowback design, even though the chamber and bolt can get pretty dirty from carbon, the fact I literally never need to clean a piston or gas port help offset that for me. The gun will also eat just about any ammo you throw into it, steel tula or hornady match ammo, it doesn't care. Being 6'2 I also don't have a problem with the charging handle, so mileage varies depending on an individuals build. Though I will say in my experience pulling the handing back underhanded and with my palm has always been faster and smoother than trying to grab it overhand like a traditional charging handle, and the charging handle itself can be pretty stiff if buying new before its worn in.
I have the same exact model of PTR(actually used to have a wide handguard and bipod on it as well). It's ran very well and over the years of having it and I've actually put a lot of money into upgrading it over that time. An inline spuhr stock, aftermarket enhanced recoil buffer, mlok handguard, and a Bill Springfield trigger group. And topped off with a 1-6x Primary Arms optic. I've had a bipod on it, but generally prefer it without one.
While that is certainly not cheap it has turned my PTR into one of the nicest .308 rifles I've ever shot. And as far as non-AR .308 rifles go I still think a base PTR really offers competitive bang for your buck.
All in all, if you are willing to understand the quirks of the rifle I recommend it as an decently affordable AR-10 alternative.

I'm 5'9" and I have no problems with the charging handle. But the absurdly long stock poses a problem for me, but this can be shortened with an aftermarket stock. The mag release cannot unfortunately, but luckily the paddle mag release exists for those of us whose fingers are not long enough to actuate it.

As a long time, 30 years owner of a H&K 91 I totally agree with your assessment of the rifle. Its heavy especially for the relatively short barrel length, the controls are inconvenient/unusual, I also find the butt stock to be somewhat short although I do have an extension that helps. My rifle does not have a built in rail but I do have an ARMS scope mount that is similar to the factory H&K claw type mount i.e. somewhat clunky and heavy. I believe the PTR has a fluted chamber like the H&K? Despite this I still am able to reload the brass if I find it! Of my three 1950s era .308 battle rifles I would put the H&K in third place behind the FN-FAL and the M1A/M14. On the plus side it shoots everything and I believe one of its selling points back in the day was it reliability in a all environments. FWIW the original H&K sling for the rifle is really strange.
    Keep up the good work

If you want to fix the trigger issue send it to Bill Springfield you will go from 11lbs to 4lbs trigger pull no creep, spongy, long pull of a trigger instead 4lbs crisp trigger pull! Also he has made enhanced buffers cuts recoil about 40% very nice on my collapsible stock . I would add get the extended charging handle you get more purchase on the handle it makes cocking easy you can get that at HKparts. Oh yeah get the extended safety alot easier to manipulate thats for sure.

Legend has it that the G-3/HK-91 was designed to be able to be thrown out of an aircraft from an altitude of about 100 feet or so sans parachute and still be functional after it hit the ground. When I was living in Florida in the mid-1990's I met an interesting character who had worked as a mercenary in the Belgian Congo during the 1970's. His unit used HK-91s. He claimed that it was the most reliable of all the battle rifles chambered in 7.62x51mm NATO that were available then. Supposedly the accuracy standards that the rifle + standard military ball ammo was designed to deliver was 2.5 MOA.
If you use the original G-3/HK-91 collapsible stock be advised that it only locks in two positions. All the way closed and all the way open. Unlike some of the more modern adjustable stocks that could be acquired it will not lock in an intermediate position. Also, if you are in the habit of trying to get a good cheek weld on the receiver of the rifle when you shoot it you will not enjoy the experience. The bolt carrier comes crashing back into the rear of the receiver like a miniature jack hammer as the action cycles. If your face is in contact with the rear of the receiver when that happens you will feel the impact. However, if you choose to use another method to index your head in relation to the sights that problem goes away, and felt recoil almost disappears entirely.
As another commentator noted, the HK-91 is hard on brass. Not only does it throw the brass out over a wide area, the chamber fluting will also result in the brass getting scored in a manner that is characteristic to that rifle. So if you're worried about trying to maintain some sort of operational anonymity you may want to use a brass catcher.

Design features: Its so heavy its good for Physical conditioning the troops, the bolt carrier can be used to club salmon or politicians, you can jam it in the tracks of an APC or tank to disable them and getting the bolt-head back on the carrier is like one of those puzzles--hours of entertainment :-) Wonderful pedigree but an AR-10 is a couple pounds lighter and has last-round hold-open.

The primary arms acss 5x optic works very well with this platform one can actually squeeze decent accuracy out of it despite it being classified as a battle rifle. I would not be surprised if theyve taken on dmr roles in their service history they make shots on a small 200yd plate feel easy. The main thing I dislike is the reload process and I believe one could instead of firing till empty simply fire 19 and load a fresh mag negating the need to recycle the cocking handle.

I was looking forward to this video with great interest. I have a Century Arms C308 currently in layaway. It's another G3/91 clone, and I believe PTR makes some of the parts. Well, a CETME hybrid clone, which is itself a G3 clone I believe. From what I read, I will encounter many of the issues that you did. I'm planning to mount a much similar optic as you, a Millet 1-4 DMS. My research also indicates some aftermarket trigger groups that should address some of the accuracy issues. It would be a bit more user-friendly and lighter if you would use the original thin grips. The bipod grips are only to make the rifle for a dubious roll as a light machine gun. Typically, in German service, it wasn't used at all for that purpose, because they had plenty of machine guns. More impoverished nations typically use the bipod grips for their lack of machine guns. I bought the wide grip and bipod just for fun for mine. I only use irons, so I don't have a rail. My trigger is smooth, and relatively light, even if a bit mushy. The recoil feels very docile, too. If you want to keep your rifle from kicking like a mule, don't allow any oil, or other lubricant to leak into the buffer assembly. This is how and why this rifle gets a bad reputation for excessive recoil. Even the vast majority of empties are reusable. I love the sights, they come very intuitively for me, even though I have much more formal training and experience with the M16a2.I must have been lucky with mine.

My favorite battle rifle and primary choice. One thing to note is that the H&K delayed rollers are the most standardized and interchangable of rifle designs, because of H&K's extremely rigid manufacturing license requirements that all specs remain as is. This means a PTR91 owner can use any HK91 parts, or even if you were in the middle of nowhere in a country that uses the G3, almost every part ever made in storage can be used. This puts it ahead of FN FAL and Ar10 in terms of surplus and new parts, fixing problems, ect. It also means that the difference between a well made PTR91 and a HK91 are almost nil.
That PTR factory in your neck of the woods uses old H&K machinery from Portugal. It may not be a German rifle per se, but it is made on authentico machinery!
The rifle's trigger is an issue, I suppose you forget about it when you run it enough. I've gotten used to the "wall" and it probably hurts my shooting with other rifles. Many will complain that the rifle kicks worse than other battle rifles, but with a steel lower to help stiffen out any play and a heavy recoil buffer the gun can be tamed. I can get 2 MOA or better out of mine with my 4x ACOG. Sometimes the horizontal drift I get in groups is fault of the ACOG, and sometimes that hard trigger.
For someone used to shooting nice triggers, the G3 can be a big kick in the pants. It takes some marrying into to get good with it, but if you ever do get used to it its a great rifle.

    • @hrfunk
      @hrfunk  4 роки тому +1

Thanks for the comment. I’m sure you are correct. If I spent a lot of time working with this rifle and learned it’s characteristics, I would undoubtedly do better with it than I did in the video. Very typical of the H&K 91/93 rifles... and even, though to a lesser degree, the ubiquitous MP5. The handling characteristics are poor, the ergonomics worse, and the triggers just plain SUCK. The only 91 that I ever fired that HAD a decent trigger was a DMR version, and even that was no hell. I understand they do make a very nice, very accurate sniper version, but I have never had the opportunity to try one.
In terms of the battle rifles of the era, I've always thought the H&K was tail-end charlie. It was FAR inferior to the FN FAL, and also the M-14. It MAY (dubiously) have been more versatile... but I don't see that.
