I thought I'd regret spending so much on my dreamconn+ controllers when these came out but the VMU slot missing from em makes me love my dreamconn controllers even more 😅
Planet ring and Alien front online are back online and have been for years. And they do support the mic. I know you're not an online gamer but you would really help the Dreamcast online community by putting some time into / making a video about the state of online DC games. So many games are back online now.
The name of the company is Retro Fighters, that doesn't mean these controllers were made for fighting games. If they were made for fighting games it would have 6-buttons on the face of it and the dpad would be over the stick rather than vice versa. They make controllers for old consoles with updated niceties. In their About Us section they spell out "We are fighting for retro", hence the name Retro Fighters.
I also prefer to use the OEM controller for DC. I know it's not perfect but that's part of the charm. But it's cool that these controllers exist as a replacement. I would like to see Retro-Bit do a one to one remake of the controller like they did with Saturn and Mega Drive. Just so we have another way to buy a new controller in the event our original ones stop working correctly.
Actually the vmu solution for the wireless Dreamcast is simply attaching an extension cord to the vmu port of the console this way you can have the vmu closer to your couch right next to you. Its not perfect but it will work.
It’s awesome these kinds of options exist now. I was searching for a Dreamcast controller more than a decade ago that would be good for 2D fighting games on the Dreamcast and the only ones I found at the time were ASCII controllers that were really expensive.
Back in the day I used an adapter that allowed me to run Saturn controllers on my Dreamcast for fighting games. For strictly 2D fighters I think this is still the best option.

I actually think I will buy one. I play mainly Resident Evil on my DC, and love how the vmu displays health/ammo, but at the same time, I love the convenience a wireless controller .
I just got one of these today at a local store and they even had the black version, so I got that one. Not sure if they decided to make more but the store I got it from only had one black model, and it does have the limited edition card bit inside the box so I don't know. Maybe I just got lucky in finding one of these, charging rn and will edit update after I've used it a bit. Update: Well I've been using it for a little while now, I've tested it with a lot of different games and although I don't like the top L and R buttons because they're too easy to press by accident. I do have to say the controller is made well and offers a great play time per charge, with all the buttons responsiveness you'd get with a normal DC controller. The design leaves much to be desired for any true nostalgic feeling but it works for what it's intended. Definitely still gonna try to get a more authentic wireless controller (even if the battery doesn't last as long bc of the vmu) but this is a great stand in for the time being. Last game I tested was Shenmue and I was concerned that it might respond differently than the DC controller when using the R trigger to walk/run slowly, but it works just as good. Overall I gotta say it was a good purchase, and now I can play comfortably at a distance w/o hurting my tailbone sitting on the floor all the time bc my controller won't stretch and honestly I didn't want to get an extension cable bc I thought it might have problems with pets or friends. Wireless is just so much better.
Just bought one - controller is great however, the vmu slot does not support third party memory cards. So, you either need an original Sega VMU OR you can boot the game with an original controller in post 1 with the memory card installed but play the games with the wireless controller in port 2. Just worth a mention as it's a bit of a surprise these did not work. Your video says third party memory cards work, which is incorrect.
Maybe you’re not the guy to ask because I don’t really see you do tear downs, but I’d like to know if they fixed the issue with the triggers breaking. The wired version were held in by plastic posts and playing Crazy Taxi somewhat competitively, I broke two within 6hrs each. I seen one video where someone took a small drill bit maybe 1/16” or smaller and placed his own metal posts to fix them.
Sega made the Sega Dreamcast the Naomi and the AtomisWave all were pretty much the same hardware. But learning more about all three would be really cool and the games that were on each system. I know you do a lot of research so it does really bring a lot to these videos.

I just had a quick question. But do you know if this needs to be fully charged before attempting to sync with the dongle ? Mine seemed to be DOA and but i can at least use it while it's charging through my computer. I'm just not sure if it needs a full charge before syncing.
Oh no problem. Dan (guy who designed the HDMI board) personally installed the HDMI board himself. The MODE, I simply installed that myself. I did videos on both actually.
I'm curious on your thoughts on the Atomiswave games now that you bring it up. I ve played a few of them and I'm impressed that they actually run on the Dreamcast.

I like Adams fantasy world alternate design ideas lol Like considering they are complete pipe dream conceptions, they are still fairly grounded in reality at the same time. Like if we are talking fantasy world, then how about if they designed a controller that was implanted in your brain so you can control the Dreamcast with your mind. That would be awesome, but I would instantly lose all my save files cos my memory is crap. lol
I like the clear blue controller it almost matches the shells that are sold for the Dreamcast that are Clear blue also. I have a modded Dreamcast with the clear blue shell. I also have a original Dreamcast that still has the disc drive. I changed the shell because it was starting to oxidize so I put a clear blue shell on that one. But both Dreamcast have the American swirl and the other has the European swirl.
There is a wireless option for years now - the DreamConn. Yes, it's expensive and yes, it's made from original Dreamcast Controllers, beefed up with a Bluetooth dongle and a battery. But the most important thing, it works, and battery life isn't even bad even with the VMU and jumppack inserted. Definetly wouldn't swap mine for this, as I consider the size, shape and feeling of the original controllers as part of the whole experience.
3rd party Dreamcast accessories have been reported in the past to present to cause damage to the controller board of the console (drawing too much voltage), so I'm wondering if these don't do that? From my bad personal experience with a couple of 3rd party accessories. I had a MadCatz vibration pack shorted itself out and it smelt charred afterwards and another vibration pack by another 3rd party company that when inserted immediately rumbled non-stop without even a game loaded then shorted itself out seconds later.
Biggest use of the VMU during gameplay on the Dreamcast im aware of is Sonic Shuffle, the sonic version of Mario party made by Hudson soft the same developers. If you play with more than two human players the cards you flip to move are face down and your cards are on your controllers VMU for only you to see. You can actually pick cards from other people but you are making a guess hoping for a useful card. Ive seen a few letsplayers play it obviously over emulator and the game is absolutely unfair for the human players without that VMU to look at your cards because cpu players will just take whatever card they want. I didnt have an N64 or gamecube so my brother and i had a lot of fun playing Sonic Shuffle together despite the slow loadtimes. Id love to play it on an ODE system if it loaded faster. Yes to Atomiswave games please Adam, and how to run them on our dreamcasts please
I can't play Dreamcast games with anything other than a Dreamcast stick it get's overshadowed cause it's hard plastic but i serioulsy have not seen or used a more precise and low deadzone stick on any other console, especially when you have one that's not worn.
Yeah, when are we ever gonna get a dual analog controller for the DC? I don't care if the right analog default maps to the face buttons. That would be preferable for quite a few things, like Outtrigger or Spawn. And would certainly be the preferable option over dropping $200 on a Japanese twin stick just to play Virtual On properly. Somebody get it done already. Kinda ridiculous that we're about to be in 2024 here, and I'm still waitin' on it.
This seems interesting, and more importantly "affordable" for most people. I will more than likely pick one up, but I'm not fond of the non dreamcast design tbh. I cannot afford one atm but I will be picking up the wireless dreamconn + and will most likely prefer that over this Xbox looking controller. I desire a wireless controller and $49.99 is definitely better than $180 😅
The only thing I hated about the original Dreamcast controller was that the d pad has that sharp plastic that would dig into your thumb when playing for a long time plus the cable being placed on the bottom so this is a great option.
I’m willing to try this one out. The original Striker DC left me so disappointed that I went back to the original. The controller felt incredibly cheap and the analog stick wasn’t as precise as the original. Hopefully this one will change my mind.
Oddly, the original DC analog stick was one of the things I liked the least out of my experience with the Dreamcast. However, that's sort of unfairly comparing the Dreamcast analog stick to something like the GameCube's analog stick, which I still think is one of the best to ever grace a controller. I say "sort of" unfairly, because the Dreamcast obviously came out before the GameCube, but the other half of "sort of" that I consider making it fall a bit into the side of being fair is the fact that they're in the same generation... I admittedly didn't own a Dreamcast until long after that generation had passed, though I had rented Dreamcast consoles from the local video rental shop when it was new and had played it at friends houses, and store kiosks, etc., so I didn't spend a significant enough amount of time with it during its relevant generation to have been able to form an opinion on it, but I did get to experience it to a certain extent while it was relevant nonetheless and I knew what it felt like because of that. I didn't go into it blindly after having used the GameCube and the Xbox 360 controllers, etc. and decide that it wasn't good, I already really knew what to expect. But, it wasn't really until owning the console later on down the line and really digging into the library that I really started to learn that I just was not a fan of the stick. The controller itself feels relatively solid and it's designed relatively well. It just feels like once you put your thumb on the stick, it doesn't feel as quality as the rest of the controller does. Yes, I bought brand new in-box controllers so my experience wasn't jaded by a worn out second hand controller, and I still wasn't a fan. NOW, that being said, the analog stick on this new controller actually looks like something that would make my Dreamcast experience MUCH better. This controller looks like a step forward for me in that regard.
I picked this up recently and I am split in my feeling about it. On the one hand the 2.4g is great, the VMU solution is fine, and the face buttons feel very similer to the OEM controller. On the other hand, the triggers feel loose and cheap, like their is no resistance and the d-pad might be subjective but I think it is a downgrade from the original which itself wasn't among the best. Shmups are basically unplayable unless your into using the stick for them which I am not.
How is the Dpad on the wireless controller versus the wired one? Is it about the same? I have the wired one and quite frankly it sucks ass for fighting games. Way too stiff and hardly any pivot to it. Love the controller but for being called "Retro Fighters" the dpad is blah.
Can't say how much of a problem it is to have enough battery life while VMU is attached. Obviously we have Dualsense with non turnoffable lights (why Sony?) and it holds up for around 3-4 hours. I'm no technician but VMU seems to consume battery at much slower pace, given the fact that the screen is not backlit. Yet again, an old Bernie would say- that's the question of economics- Retrobit aims at realistic prices and once antimatter technology batteries become available we will add it to our controllers blablabla

Dreamcast will always be my favourite console, nice to see its still getting supported almost 24 years later.

Just use some extension cable on the controller port for the VMU adapter to place it near you which should work.

Latest Dreamcast controller is so bad… removing VMU from the controller itself is the worst decision ever. VMU is the soul of that controller.

It shouldn't need to be fully charged, but I recommend doing that anyway.

I have this controller but the dongle has issues reading the vmu, I have to pull the vmu out slightly for it to read it.

Questions why do none of the retro fighter controllers have a built in 3.5mm headphone jack?
I'm not sure there would be a way to achieve what you want with that as that's likely a limitation of the consoles.

My DreamConn is a prototype. I like it, but the short battery life of it was unfortunate. I ASSUME the newer versions last longer.

I got around that by wrapping it with a washcloth, but DC controller definitely had flaws

I’m willing to try this one out. The original Striker DC left me so disappointed that I went back to the original. The controller felt incredibly cheap and the analog stick wasn’t as precise as the original. Hopefully this one will change my mind.

Oddly, the original DC analog stick was one of the things I liked the least out of my experience with the Dreamcast. However, that's sort of unfairly comparing the Dreamcast analog stick to something like the GameCube's analog stick, which I still think is one of the best to ever grace a controller. I say "sort of" unfairly, because the Dreamcast obviously came out before the GameCube, but the other half of "sort of" that I consider making it fall a bit into the side of being fair is the fact that they're in the same generation... I admittedly didn't own a Dreamcast until long after that generation had passed, though I had rented Dreamcast consoles from the local video rental shop when it was new and had played it at friends houses, and store kiosks, etc., so I didn't spend a significant enough amount of time with it during its relevant generation to have been able to form an opinion on it, but I did get to experience it to a certain extent while it was relevant nonetheless and I knew what it felt like because of that. I didn't go into it blindly after having used the GameCube and the Xbox 360 controllers, etc. and decide that it wasn't good, I already really knew what to expect. But, it wasn't really until owning the console later on down the line and really digging into the library that I really started to learn that I just was not a fan of the stick. The controller itself feels relatively solid and it's designed relatively well. It just feels like once you put your thumb on the stick, it doesn't feel as quality as the rest of the controller does. Yes, I bought brand new in-box controllers so my experience wasn't jaded by a worn out second hand controller, and I still wasn't a fan. NOW, that being said, the analog stick on this new controller actually looks like something that would make my Dreamcast experience MUCH better. This controller looks like a step forward for me in that regard.

I picked this up recently and I am split in my feeling about it.
On the one hand the 2.4g is great, the VMU solution is fine, and the face buttons feel very similer to the OEM controller. On the other hand, the triggers feel loose and cheap, like their is no resistance and the d-pad might be subjective but I think it is a downgrade from the original which itself wasn't among the best. Shmups are basically unplayable unless your into using the stick for them which I am not.

How is the Dpad on the wireless controller versus the wired one? Is it about the same? I have the wired one and quite frankly it sucks ass for fighting games. Way too stiff and hardly any pivot to it. Love the controller but for being called "Retro Fighters" the dpad is blah.
I don't recall them being particularly different, but I don't have both in front of me right now. Currently out of the country.

Can't say how much of a problem it is to have enough battery life while VMU is attached. Obviously we have Dualsense with non turnoffable lights (why Sony?) and it holds up for around 3-4 hours. I'm no technician but VMU seems to consume battery at much slower pace, given the fact that the screen is not backlit. Yet again, an old Bernie would say- that's the question of economics- Retrobit aims at realistic prices and once antimatter technology batteries become available we will add it to our controllers blablabla
