I am brand new to all things sketching, watercolor and let's face it... art. All week I look forward to Wednesdays to see what great creation you will guide me through. It's awesome, but entirely expected how many viewers you have. Thank you Paul, for the sketches that are helping me learn perspective, the tutorials at no cost, your sense of humor, and your willingness to share your talent. There is no question that your UA-cam channel is keeping me in this watercolor experience.

Paul, I’ve been drawing the same picture/painting since 2018. I draw it every now and then to see my progress comparing it to the previous drawing.
Last night I looked at the signature for the first time and lo and behold it reads, PNC/18. I almost fell of my chair. I quickly returned here to your channel and went through every video you’ve made. Nope, it ain’t on your list. It’s a painting of a village street somewhere in Europe.
I do wonder why it isn’t on your channel and I wonder where I screen shot it from. Cheers

Good morning Paul! I had to log into my other account since the powers that be are blocking me from commenting. I feel like I must be targeted because I don’t post bad comments. Anyway…
Love this tutorial. I have wondered if there’s fake paints out there (like Gucci bags). I bought some from Amazon and the box didn’t match the paint. Very sus.
I live near the beach and I know a scene like this would sell easily. I also took some pics of a house on the River that’s turquoise that I want to paint. A line and wash might be the best way to do it. Thanks so much for sharing.

The two cerulean blues are different pigments. The cerulean blue from Daniel smith is the original pigment PB35, while the van gogh paint is Phthalo blue green shade, PB15:3. The two pigments have completely different properties. PB35 is a cooler version of Cobalt blue and thus is a granulating pigment that can be hard to rewet. PB15:3 is much cheaper, therefore it is often included in starter sets as Cerulean. It is transparent, very staining and extremely bright and tinting.

By the way also thank you for all these wonderful tutorials! I find it always surprising how different paints with the same name can be between different brands. Even the same pigment can sometimes be slightly different, depending on how it is manufactured. In my palete I have a version of PB35 by schminke, called Cobalt Azure. It is low tinting and granulating but doesn't have this gummy effect. @@ArtbyPaulClark

I started my silly comments after the week you told us about some of the videos out there saying things like "learn watercolour in 15mins". I thought I'd just share anecdotes about what it's really like. Besides, I thought you might get a bit bored of being told how fab you are in every comment - which you are of course.:) @@ArtbyPaulClark

Many of the brands of paint you use (Cotman, Van Gough etc) the cerulean blue is actually phthalo blue, (PB15) with added white - very bright, very high tinting strength, very staining. The duller cerulean is the ‘true’ cerulean (PB35).

This is just what I've personally experienced... I love Daniel Smith paints...but I also enjoy granulation, which Daniel Smith is known for. They have some regular style paints as well. I watch swatching videos before I buy a paint because all brands have different styles. If you want older style paints that have a flat type of look, Winsor & Newton and M. Graham are great for that. Daniel Smith probably isn't for you and most likely wont fit your style of paint. I do enjoy the flatter, no granulation type paints for certain things, but my 120 pan watercolor palette is probably 80% Daniel Smith paints 🤦‍♀️ haha. But it's all about preference obviously.

If anyone is reading this comment: I've tried it, even though I'm a beginner (watercolour since August and drawing since ... never) and the result was incredible. OK, the "master" explains very well (I'm a subscriber and therefore hooked 🤭 ) but the technique is also super super super forgiving ! It's like when you haven't had enough sleep and you put on mascara 😅.
So if you're not sure, go for it!

Wow absolutely Marvelous Paul, you make it look so easy. Your colors are always bang on. I like line and wash, find it gives it more definition. Thank-you , for giving us such wonderful tutorials with so much detail info.
In the paint comparison I liked the Daniel Smith color. Though it seemed to have more depth and weight.
Thank-you again for these enjoyable tutorials. 💖💯💖

Love this, especially the way you did the sky. My method is paint it on, dab it off, paint it again, try dabbing it off again. I have literally 100s of different colours by many different brands including Daniel Smiths Luminescence, Primatek, etc but my go to paint is Schmincke Horadam. A brand I use if I want something so vibrant it shouts off the page is Mijello Mission Gold. I like to try new things, and I keep on adding, but I still go back to SH. I thought the Van Gogh seemed somewhat turquoise in colour. I have Van Gogh paints but I think I bought their metallic range. I hate a messy palette. My palettes are tidier than my house! 🤣

So great! I learned so much, as always. I use almost exclusively Daniel Smith and I love most of them, but I use a different Cerulean on my palette (not sure which brand). I agree about Daniel Smith Cerulean. That makes sense. Thanks for pointing that out.

The Van Gogh Cerulean Blue is a hue made with Phthalo Blue and Titanium White pigments, and the Daniel Smith Cerulean Blue is made with genuine Cerulean Blue pigment.
Also want to say that I enjoy your channel very much.

Love the tutorial. When I restarted painting again after many years, I got the Van Gogh set as well and I love the Cerulean Blue, one of my favorite colors. I have tried out other colors like Daniel Smith and Schmincke but I think the value for the price is best with the Van Gogh range.

The Daniel Smith pthalo blue that comes in the mixing set is probably a lot closer to the other brands' cerulean. I have the same issue with the DS cobalt colors being goopy.
Excellent tutorial, as always! I love learning from you and Margot.

Well, thank you kindly. I loved this video. Im pretty new to watercolour. This was so well done and your talent painting and teaching is great. When you did the sand did you spray first likethe sky. Is there anything else you sprayed first besides the sky?

Thanks Paul. Haven't tried pen and wash yet but this inspires me to have a go. If you don't like port much I recommend either tawny or verdelho or white port with tonic as an aperitif - I guarantee it will transform your view.

I really liked your display on how you paint this scene and the changes you made to change the scene to one with more eye appeal. Your choice of colors was very enlightening as well. One is told the artist has license to alter the scene to their heart’s desire. I like what you changed given the fact you explained why you made the changes. Your statement on the Daniel Smith Cerulean Blue paint was something not often seen or heard on these videos and I appreciate the tip. I’ve had issues with other manufacturers as well so it was good to hear it from a more professional painter. One question if I may. Lately, I have been having issues with the tape I use around the circumference of the page. I’ve tried several of late and they all have been tearing off the paper, either a thin layer or the entire edge, no matter who manufacturers the paper. What tape are you using? Yours pulled off very cleanly and I would like to try it. Thanks for this video. I enjoyed watching it and I feel I did learn a bit or two.

Many thanks - the tape I use is just cheap low-tac, builders masking tape.
