Multiboxing Has Changed Forever In World of Warcraft

- Опубліковано 31 жов 2024
- Out of nowhere Multiboxing takes a big hit prior to Shadowlands! Having existed in it's current format for near 16 years, finally Blizzard cuts back at the software that was able to make it so incredibly efficient for certain gameplay tasks.
What caused them to flip around on this stance though? Let's take a look at both Classic and Retail!
Enjoy!

Heya all,
Just wanted to give a quick shoutout to Juno from the Peopleofazeroth podcast - was lucky to have been on it recently!
Give it a check out if you need something to get you through leveling or something!

This benefits 99.9% of the community.
i'd say a bit lower as im sure more that .01% of the subs are bots but yeah this is great for legit players. Enjoy your inflation ;)
@@samara_1990 it's not more than 0.3% tbh.
@@samara_1990 Thank god. We need some inflation right now.
@@ButtTrauma yeah it's stupid how cheap everything is. I haven't farmed anything since 1 month into bfa
@@samara_1990 Because herbs costing barely anything was so nice! thanks to people like that doing the economy in retail was impossible, ever since 8.2 druid multiboxers have been camping spawn spots of mobs and picking every herb (and ore in some cases) instantly! I literally didn't found any herb in Nazjatar for hours once! Yes this will benefit the commmunity, the people with gathering alts can use them once again. Know why my latest 120 didn't had any professions? Druid multiboxers. Way too much of a pain for almost no profit at all. SL it can finally become that herbalist and miner (or skinner, no clue what yet).
It's about damn time.
Damn you Wille! You got me really frustrated by not finding Wille in the intro. Took me about 15 restarts of the intro.
same lol had to slow it down
same! sneaky sneaky
You can just stop the video when he says WillE.
saaaaame, SO sneaky.
I was lucky enough to find him after a few restarts :p
The only people who are upset by this are the ones who abuse it.
Prove it.
Owning and operating multiple accounts.. abuse? Im not following this jump
@@Krombop.M owning multiple accounts in and of itself is fine but using a third party software to automate key presses is very close to boting but didn’t count because technically you are still behind your screen and „controlling“ it. people abused that loophole. Blizz fixed this wich is long overdue imo.
@@GuckDaBaws Botting is having your character(s) play themselves without any human controlling it/them. Multi-boxing is one person controlling several characters. Multi-boxing =/= botting.
Most the people defending it were doing it.
I actually thought this was the most fair review of the policy change. You looked at the issue from both sides with no bias as far as I could tell, and are very informed. This is coming from a Classic only multi-boxer's perspective.
Some people multibox because that's the only way they can do dungeons. I never got to do a full run of DM with my team before the rules changed. But I leveled up them up to level 20 and managed to get to Smite before I had to log because it was getting late. And the next day I saw the post. :/
The only way to do low level instances on my server is if you pay for a boost. And if you find someone who wants to start a group it takes forever to be finally let down when the group eventually disbands, because of the lack of people who wants to join.
And since I now have a family and responsibilities, I only have one or two hours each evening. So I made my own group. Didn't turn out so well in the end though. :/
Honestly, people will just complain about ANYTHING Blizzard does.
AS THEY SHOULD. BLIZZARD IS AWFUL.
_logs back into WoW_
Well Blizzard does deserve this, but toxic internet culture isn't fun or constructive, yeah. Multiboxing ban is actually something that may save Shadowlands for me, with market being a more interesting place, where chinese gold farmers won't be able to hold 99% of the stock.
Although it's Blizzard we are talking about, I am expecting that nothing will change really, with multiboxer software easily finding holes in a net that is Blizzard's protection services, but with a shit-ton of false positives resulting in bans for normal players. I mean that's what happened this year in Classic with Blizzard trying to ban bots.
I hope blizzard bans the way you enjoy playing the game while people say “oh good”
@@robertp457 people enjoy playing with cheats in CS:GO. Does that mean by your logic that playing this way is also "okay"?
Yeah, there's been more good news recently than we have seen in ages. Shadowlands delayed, mbx changes, blizzconline free. Theres bad too - you could say SL and Naxx are too close, closing offices making big news etc.
At least priase the good if you want to call out the bad, thats my take on it.
If someone can legit run 5+ accounts with out key broadcasting, so long as it isn't just a "different but same thing", then good on them. Zero problem.
The current multiboxing method is essentially 1 manual account with a bunch of scripted bots following. Basically 1 step away from full on botting.
No one multiboxes by alt tabbing lawl. They use a program, script, etc to duplicate the actions to each client. It's almost botting because each character after the first is literally playing itself. I've said since the start that there should be NO distinction between boxing/botting. If one is cheating, then so is the other. But forum trolls were like "this cheating is ok, but not that cheating". Bunch of hypocrites.
as a regular 64 boxer. manually controling 5 accounts is rather easy, ill enlighten you on some tools besides isboxer at our disposal.
the addons around today can let you virtually box effectivly without software at all.
-you can follow , do all quest gossip, sharing, completing, tracking from1 toon in ema
-your targeting and rotation, assisting, looting can be bound to 1 key in gse
-all you need is a method to cycle windows and press keys; here is how i can fire a spell every gcd on 64 accounts;
first in ease of access in windows is an option to activate a window by 'mousing over'
second of all you go buy one of those mice that have mousewheel with no stop, you can flick it and it keeps scrolling
thrid you setup all windows in a line and just move your mouse back and forward.
do you dont have 'zero problems' with this still?
Blizzard cant cherry pick the addons they want or dont want.
Rather they allow or protect an api making or breaking the addon. They give us the tools they allow and addon creators creativty with the tools they are given is the end result.
ultimatly blizzard controls the functions, if they dont want it they remove it.
Your opionion thats some addons should be banned is invalid because they control the api.
@@n01n0s yes blizzard totally can and already did cherry pick the addons they want or don't want.
I've my main account and another three I use just for farming. While using ISboxer does indeed make things easier alt-tabbing is not that bad, it just take a little longer. This will hit people with 10+ accounts for sure but most of those farm trains you see in the open world are bots, not multiboxers.
I used to be in a guild with the guy who wrote the leveling profiles for HonorBuddy bots. The best way to kill bots is to remove Click to Move and rework co-ordinates in game. The bots move with Click to Move. And they navigate through the Co-ords. Kill those two things and bots are dead in the water.
I guess click-to-move is so hard coded into the game that it's impossible to remove? And maybe new players use click to move until they learn better? It's surprised me too that click to move is still in the game, maybe those are the reasons
Click to Move is a godsend. You can click a location on the horizon and go make a cup of tea while you're flying to your next zone.
@@barrywhittingham6154 or just turn on auto run.
But they cant fix the fly hacking and the fact I can never see a black lotus anymore because I literally have to compete with people flying
Heres my problem with multiboxing in Classic, if a guy is multiboxing 5 mages and i stumble upon him he just pompyro one shot me with the mages and at that point he basically payed to kill me since there was no fight or skilled involved
Hunter multiboxers in 19 PVP were always just completely unfair. No skill involved and you could never get away from them. Love to see this news.
1 enemy target is nothing for a multibox cheater. They don't even need CDs for that. 5x fireblasts or shocks and you drop dead. A multibox mage can bomb entire raids.
There's an easy solution:
Implement a system like there is on Iron Man on Runescape. People who want to multibox just have to click a checkbox to enable this. Making it so that they can't use the AH, can't trade/group up with anyone (other than their own multiboxed characters) and can't PvP.
Make it so they can still multibox, but play in their own little bubble/eco system.
Multiboxers who avoid this system should get banned. Multiboxers who enable this system should play in peace. If they genuinly play it to enjoy the game more, it will show with a system like this. If there's still outrage, the motive is clear. They are just out to get an advantage by paying for more accounts.
Wouldnt work because its not about AH. Its about the farming spots
@@mavielor7394 it's about inflation, which would be stopped with this.
I feel like WillE's intros are getting higher in pitch every time

I support this move. Blizz can recreate trust, and if they continue working on it before TBC classic. I think they might get back hundreds of thousands in playerbase.
The only thing that has changed is no software imputs but i dont think bots care about that
Stop saying tbc classic. Its never going to happen. The burning crusade was and is the reason why the need for classic existed. Sounds like their problem is automation bots would certainly under that category
@@MrElionor Bot users will find way round anything no mmos will be bot free
This will greatly affect multiboxing, and possibly make running 80 characters impossible but it's still doable on a smaller scale via both hardware and software solutions.
For instance a keyboard splitter allows you to broadcast keyboard inputs to other computers. It's not as scalable as the current, now banned tools but it achieves the same thing and you can get cheap used hardware that is capable of running the game.
There are software solutions, possibly running VMs locally and apoofing hardware inputs is an option or just renting remote servers and running the clients there with lag.
The barrier for entry is much higher now so this will severely hamper most multiboxers. Well done by Blizzard I say.
I don't mind this change. What worries me is that people will start reporting people whom are NOT using any software to play more than one account. I have multiple accounts. I Alt Tab between them. I like the challenge of doing difficult content with them.
So happy about that even though i don't play anymore. Used to do a lot of World PvP and multiboxers were usually giant manchildren with way too much expendable income since they had no families or girlfriends. Their lack of skill in the game made them spend the money for all those accounts just to still be average af. GJ Blizz. Ya goofed on em
If 100 dollars a month is “is way too much expendable income” you need to rethink your options in life. You sound jealous.
@@tonymanero7428 100 dollars a month is way too much to power trip in a video game. You need to rethink your options in life. You sound salty.
Just create virtual machines and use separate ip's for each of them. Use another virtual machine to control all the others from outside them with screen sharing software. Click once to do the same thing on every virtual machine, and basically continue doing the same thing. Technically your not using multi boxing software then and still achieving the some functionality, and since every client is running on its own virtual computer and being controlled from outside its not a break in TOS again. Plus blizzard won't be able to monitor the controlling PC/virtual machine unless theychange current TOS.
let us know how that works out for you m8.
pretty sure you'll get banned nonetheless but don't come crying about when it happens.
what you are suggesting is basically the same as saying "im not technically a thief, i just loan peoples money indefinitely"... its the same act with a different method and you'll likely not fool anyone with transparent technicalities like that.
Chromie time allows botting and multiboxing to farm 14 times as much as all expansions before. they had to take steps to secure the integrity of the game.
albeit 16 years to late.
Chromie time is 7 options WM is 7 more. thats 14 phases of the same location.
made aoe raw gold farming a 500k-1mil an hour farm since chromie released.
it is my belief that the chromie mechanics are why we are seeing this change.
14 times on a technical level, but not in reality. You're still limited by the amount of players.
@@CottidaeSEA If every area is contested, your bots are still earning 14x as much as the other players contesting the region
@@iLagProIsCool Again, 14 times on a technical level but not in reality, because the leveling zones aren't saturated. While it's possible that would change in the future, it's certainly not the case right now.
@@CottidaeSEA For the past 4 weeks druid multiboxers and botters alike have been farming the imps on the eastern side of Moonclaw vale in valsharah on all phases of chromie time. All saturated to loot cap. this has slowed down tremendously. i checked out the spot an hour ago and it was empty. whoever these people are/were they made gold cap on several accounts for sure.
@@samara_1990 This is still not 14x. For a few resources, for sure. But not 14x overall. It really is only 14x on a technical level. Even though there is an increase, it's not 14x.
I could see one person setting up 5 identical computers with a master keyboard the has five output cables, and a master mouse with the same output. It'll take just a bit more setup to make functional, sure. But once they have all the alts stacked via the individual keyboards/mice, they can use the master to keep things flowing easy peasy.
Yeah it will be just like the old days where hardware was used a lot more then software. It's risky though, I can see Activision outright banning multi-boxing if it becomes a problem again.
I have no dog in the race. So I don't care either way. I'm just speculating. I think it will take another 16 years though. As long as they aren't using software automation, I guess they're safe as the blue text is worded. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.
Look, if I actually saw different classes in a party with varying names that was clearly someone making a full party to wreck the world al la Might and Magic, I would totally agree that's cool. I have literally NEVER seen anything but a full party of one class, one race, with the most lame names changed by one letter, usually jibberish, completely cheesing the game and farming gold.
I do this in Classic, and my party is designed around the fact I will be moving through screens. Prot warrior for tanking. Fire mage for dps, CC, and counterspell. Hybrid shaman for totems (poison, disease, and tremor are key for some fights), chain heal/lightning, extra counter (Earth Shock) Holy priest for Undead CC, heals, and DoT. Resto druid for HoTs, Innervate. Basically, tank builds threat, while priest and druid keep up HoTs. Fire mage does damage - three second casts - during which time I can bounce through 4 other characters initiating other abilities/casts. It's fun and challenging, and at times incredibly difficult. So far, the best hardest thing I have finished is a DMN tribute run.
@@scorchingballs there's the one person who actually does this. I'm sorry that other people have ruined a good thing for you. Blame the bots! We do!
@@laner.845 I also multi-boxed multiple classes. I don't PVP, because it's not something I want to do. Having 5 separate classes is/was the most difficult/challenging/fun thing which made WoW playable for years. Never had to hear people bitching about what gear I was wearing, or argue for drops in a 5 man instance. I loved/hated it, because there wasn't anyone to talk to, but loved the challenge of running 5 classes. Having 5 separate classes at max level was very very cool, but leveling up Engineering, Blacksmithing, and everything else was a major pain in the ass. Some days you log in and your entire session was nothing but leveling up that shit among several classes.
The reason boxing wasn't addressed by Blizzard for the longest was every Blizz employee was issued 3 free WoW accounts. Who do you think multiboxed the most? The botters made this a problem.
@@Yami02blu agreed, the bots are the real problem here. I'm sorry if your setup is impacted by the changes. I have no issue with someone running multiple classes at once. That takes skill and precision. Maybe that's also why I've never noticed multiboxers who are doing that. It looks like an actual group of people playing the game as it's meant to be played and sends off no red flags. That's not what bots are doing, though. The bots have to be dealt with to have a hope of the economy righting itself.

Brd became my favorite instance when I could solo it with my main, so I feel with you there.
These multiboxing characters long-long times ago didn't pay a penny for Blizzard. They buying their subscription with the golds what they earning by exhausting resources and screwing up AH economy. And they buying their expasion with wow-token turned real dollars on every each account. So Blizzard won't loose any money on them at all. And "normal" players will just win, when they can do easily a worldquest what they weren't able before because 4-5 Moonkin AoEd the whole quest area so all mobs became engaged before anyone else could touch them. And my herbalist won't missing any of the flying druid multibox herbers, who instantly exhausted all herbs nod when my character just tried to touch any of them. In global, the "normal" playing community will be ending with much more relaxing and enjoyable game-experience.
Multi boxing is and always has been scummy as hell.
I dont multibox but the funny thing is nothing will change with this you, as they have already found a way round it with 2 pcs you can box up to 8 accounts per pc with no software for about $45 all thanks to amazon lol

No.. botting, gold farming and grieving people is scummy as hell.. Multiboxing itself has nothing to do with that. Don't tell me you believe gun kills people too? People kill people and people abuse multiboxing.
One of the main reasons why I quit WoW 10 years ago was the imbalance with allowing multi-boxers in the battlegrounds. At one point, It wasn't un common to see two people 5 boxing on the apposing side in Alterac Valley and choking up the bottle neck points with 10 Shamans (played by two people) and an army of totems all simultaneously placed as you watch one person at a time get instantly dropped by Lava Burst. All one shotted. Choke points were nothing more then newly established grave yards. If this goes into place, I would definitely get back into BG's. Way to go Blizz!
I did REAL multiboxing. rSham Prot WAR from TBC to WoTLK using alt tab. I did win 2 Arenas!! :)
I really enjoy multiboxing in classic with my 5 man team. if this can remove all the bots i see i think its worth it to ban all mirror key strokes. But if this ends up only affecting multiboxers and not bots , its a step in the wrong direction. The one that is inflating gold price is all the bots, not multiboxers. And to ban multiboxers but let bots continue would have little or no effect. Right now im looking at 45 bots running brd on my server, they are all rogues with no guild. And they have been there 24/7 for months even if i have reported them for booting many times, and if i try to farm golden pearls the shoore of azhara is crowded with hunter bots who run around like headless chickens
its not inflating gold prices but collapsing price of everything else in game. THAT is the problem.
On retail multiboxing is cancer. Due to the game trying to put you on a layer with a lot of player herbs are personal looted so you can have armys of druids just crashing the fuck out the market. Same with a lot of other markets.
just within a week of this posting, moonkin farming almost shut down Nazmir on Shadow Council. There were about three separate farms running in the Tar Pits and it bogged the server down pretty bad. everyone was trying to report it but Blizzard support doesn't move fast. I hope this change creates more good faith and server stability.
Moonkin farms ware what pushed me away from druid class, I was just so annoyed by them that I started thinking: "Oh this guy is leveling a druid probably for bot farming what a scum." I even wanted to main cat druid in shadowlands but waters have been poisned.
If they're not in a pack, the only way to tell a legitimate moonkin from a moon-bot is most players opt for the "astral form" glyph.
True, actual players use zandalari moonkin or astral form,
Also no multiboxer is ever an allied race
@@niklass1641 I'm one of the old-school moonkin that still rolls the fat chicken form. Astral is nice, but chicken is fun.
As someone who multiboxes in Classic without using any cheat software, I applaud this move. Multi-boxing can be a fun and challenging style of gameplay. It is not faster or more efficient than finding a regular group; however, it is great for times when the guild is not running anything, or you have a small window to play and want to try a challenge.
I use two computers and play tank/healer. Set up the razors right and hit follow. Its still taking me forever to hit level 60 in classic!! lol
The software used to multi-box has always violated the terms of service, but blizz let their greed get the better of them, and created a loophole for MB. Now that they are seeing tons of issues being caused by the same input broadcast software, they are trying to remove the problems without pissing off the idiots that pay for a dozen or more accounts so they can MB. Blizz is no longer a gaming company, they are in it for the money exclusively, so anyone that is looking at a ban will just need to show that they pay for multiple accounts, and say they were multi-boxing, and Blizz will give them their blessing to carry on.
Good move from Blizzard. As an alchemist it always annoyed me seeing 5 druids doing synchronised flying through Nazjatar in a flickering blob. Herbing, naturally. Great video as always, WillE!
naxx and SL are probably the same time for a single reason: Twitch chat.... "Retail andy omegalol" "Classic andyomegalol" if i personally saw that i would assume i had 2 different demographics and i had to keep them both happy; meaning avoiding the "What about me" conversation you usually have with your kid on their siblings birthday and they dont get presents.
I think the reason why Blizz wants Naxx out soon is that they will announce TBC at Blizzcon. Maybe even start beta there and get TBC out in summer to keep classic going.
@@Kornn66 Atiesh takes months to get.
@@Kornn66 Doubtful if theyre going for a mimicry of The old released; id say maybe youre correct about the announcement; but not beta. Beta would prob be summer release around Oct/Sept.
@@Sauvenil I think Blizz cares about sub numbers more than Atiesh. And if TBC comes out in summer there is 6-8 months time to raid Naxx.
hah, found you after a few pauses going through it screen by screen! sneaky you.
The only multiboxing that really got me annoyed was multiboxing Shamans in Arenas, throw down totems, cast lightning bolt and right after that any shock spell = dead target, you can't heal a target which hasn't lost any health yet, but if a target you want to heal dies from 5 simultaneous hits there's no window to heal.
the only reason i dont like this is cuz if blizz is fine with multiboxing then why police the tools used for it. its like telling someone what monitor or keyboard to use. either ban it or not dont half ass it. and if there are concerns with the software then develop the tech and put the resources so u can detect any actual issues with said software.
I remember a photo of a 9 (I think), pc setups to play EVE online. Just a giant wall of monitors a bunch of keyboards. An eerie sight
In retail ive seen multiboxers farming nearly 24/7, so maybe mat costs will go up in shadowlands. This might also cause wow tokens to shoot up tho since gold farming will be a tad easier. I could just be a brainlet tho ive never studied anything in terms of economic philosophy
BFA is filled with f'ing moonkin robots...
I was creating a new character like 4 hours after the post and ran into a multiboxer in the starting area, we will see how much blizz enforces this.
Can't expect everyone to see this shit. I'd say the overwhelming majority of the players DON'T read the forum announcement like this. Wait until the warnings start coming in, we'll see how it affects the game.
This will be what matters long term!
First off @WillE a big THANK YOU for all your videos, I enjoy them tremendously! I would like to note though that multiboxing is in no way dead - I myself managed to clear both Strath UD and Live completely without any 3rd party broadcasting software using only in-game macros and A LOT of mouse movement on a huge screen... :P Sure, it will change, and 10/20/40 mage gimmick boxes may become completely or mostly obsolete (which is a good thing I think), but for the most part it is far from dead.
Took me a solid minute to find WillE at the start :P
tad sad for the people who use multiboxing for fun and not just mass gold making. But its probably better for the game non the less.
The worst part of this change is that it took so long and the damage is already done. Good news for TBC at least I guess.
It really just comes down to resource farming in retail. Ultimately, this will help the vast majority of the community.
So 3 months passed. Bots still infest your crap game :D. HOW DID THIS change anything besides BLIZZARD losing subscribers? I mean losing the guys who were mostly soloing dungeons and raids for self entertainment and NOT for the purpose of farming GOLD.
non-software key broadcasting has existed longer than software systems and was the original way boxing was done in vanilla. All it will do is raise the cost of entry, it will do nothing to stop it.
that's just naive of you... if you have to invest money into hardware just to multibox its going to deter a lot of would-be multiboxers, of that there is no doubt. to say it won't deter people would be like saying people who walk on coal can still walk on coal after its been lit on fire.
I'm so happy this is happening.
Holy mother of god make a Heroes of Might and Magic video or something, im legit hyped that you even brought the game up

In current, I ran into so, soooo many moonkin groups when trying to do Legion quests. It was such a pain in the butt because they usually parked and tagged mobs needed for quests.
this WillE face was a bit tricky but i figured it out...after watching it for 5 times and the pausing it LOL
Multiboxing (or similar) was banned in vanilla and TBC, I know a few people who were banned specifically for it... When I came back to WoW classic I was surprised it had become allowable in the time I had been away. Apparently it became allowable somewhere in or after WOTLK. Likely when the subs started dropping.

Around 10 years ago know a multi boxer that ran 5 accounts at once. Using mostly hardware and almost no software to control the movements. Because he just used a bunch of assist focus and spam same target with instant cast spells macros.
I was farming 24/7 during cata. Elementium and Pyrium if i recall correctly. Un'Goro, Donniron, the AH was MINE, controlled it completely for pretty much 2.5 Months and raised the prices as i liked. All out of my own time, own investment. I was swimming in the pool of gold i created myself coin for coin. Then end Cata start MoP/WoD multiboxers everywhere. No more chance to have any meaningful bussines with multiboxers, how even if one ore node is like farming the entire zone 2 times for them? Competition in AH? MultiBoxers have guild banks full of product they just buy you up or drop the price. I quit then, im ok with extreme investment if it pays out, that makes the magic of the world, gives it ground. The ability to just get out your CC, pay more WoW and multibox is just stabbing all values WoW has in the regard of investment in the back. And i am not even talking about PvP and PvE. Multiboxing makes everything worse and less fun for people who "play" the game rather than paying real money for advantages.
Who needs multi boxing when you have heaps of mindless drones who follow you around because you stream on twitch lmao
I haven't played WoW since the end of Wrath of the Lich King. I only encountered multiboxing a few times. I thought it was strange. Back then the concept of having a powerful enough computer to run 2 accounts at once seemed crazy expensive.
It's nice they were able to put a stop to this... before the literal last content patch for classic comes out.
I have been killed several times on a pvp realm by mulitboxers in the open world. You might be able to take one down but no chance against 5 troll shamans at once casting some shocks and spells. This change was long needed !
This has not stopped-it is still happening. Log on to Area 52 and head over there and watch out in Moonglade.

I saw a multiboxer druid in shadowlands the other day. I wanted to report him at first, but turned out he just spent a few second longer to loot once per druid, so fully legal. So from a farming perspective, i dont see this ban doing anything. Its mostly from a PvP/PvE perspective where it will have a bigger influence.
Been seeing it more the past few weeks myself, even in PVP late at night. I know they aren't doing it the legal way because all of them shot a firebolt at the same time " 15 mages" reported them but sure nothing will be done
@@akoww1000 While the ones i encountered were legal, surely there will be people like the ones you encountered. And knowing blizzard, they do not care much about the health state of the game. All that matters to them is that people continiue to sub and buy stuff from their stop. Heck even the balance team dont care much. The proof lays in how for example balance druids have been miles ahead of the rest for 4 months now and the low end specs are beeing left at low end. Honestly this is Blizzard now. They got rid of the passion and now all they show is greed in pretty wrappings.
They’ve moved to hidden spots in Draenor now. Saw 5 horde druids and he had his alliance toon there to talk shit with I guess
had to watch the intro 3 times to see Wille
I think it's a good change. I like dual boxing a tank/healer combo and doing quests dungeons and I'm not clear if I'll be able to make it work now or not in a way that's still enjoyable... tabing constantly may get old. But from everything you showed in the video I think it's a good change and obviously if this were a democracy you can tell the vote would have gone against boxing in a landslide.
The issue with modern gaming, whatever the case is people will always activly seek out any means to exploit the game so whenever things are borderline or just out of an ordinary style of gameplay its being exploited to the lengths it forces the game creators to act on it
Man I LOVED to gather a few friends and kill multiboxers in the world. I LOVED trying to LOS them while battling
But if it's for the best, i can afford to lose this experience
They need to address all of the damn bots in the game.
I think this is a good change for the game, it’s the same as when Jagex banned the use of auto hot keys to certain actions within the game. And yes people were also pissed about that because they have to sweat a little harder, however it ended up making a positive impact on the game in the long run and helped restore a little bit of integrity within the game of oldschool runescape and I believe that blizzard is attempting to do the same. Like they said, it’s not against the rules to multi box, it’s against the rules to use software to make it easier
It is possible using just basic Microsoft Windows to mirror you actions. on to multiple monitors and/or connected computers. However the hardware and power costs for a large scale operation will be rather big.
Damn, this was the hardest WillE thus far!
I still see people running well over 10 toons and last week 18 toons all moving and doing the same skills at the same time. I know there is a legal way to do it but there is no way you can control 18 toons at the same time doing it the legal way
I like this decision, and I agree it will be good for the game. I do
however want to throw in my 2 cents. I'm a multiboxer. I enjoyed PvP and
doing dungeon content. It was fun setting everything up and constantly
improving. World PvP was awesome fun, especially invading enemy cities,
and let's be honest, world PvP doesn't happen enough. Even though I'm
losing my investment in building a multitude of accounts I'm ready for a
change and glad this is happening. There's been a plague of too many
farmers ruining it for everyone else. They need to go. Blizz was shady
as hell collecting all the shadowlands orders before announcing this
though.
IMO this is a great move. So long as reports only catch boxers and not people alt tabbing / follow playing
I heartily approve of the moniker Willydan
15Years later and spellbatching and leeway is in the game ruining PVP and therefore max level content for me, So I switch to multiboxing to get some fun out of the game and here blizzard comes to change that after 15 years while leaving leeway/batching on.
The first thing I decided to do was play my 60 holy paladin in wsg. within the first minute I got spelllocked on holy light even though my target survived because of holy light going through.
On my multibox team's all I did was run 5mans. Not having to look for a group and having to control 5 characters at a time was incredible, It was like new classes were added to the game and it was amazing. RIP
I am so HAPPY about this
Actually your video kind of opened my eyes that.. Maybe 2021 blizzard is trying to go back to "'by gamers for gamers" culture and leaving the 'business mindset' that we've experienced in the last years
Look idk if you can prevent it, but archeage use to really hate their being more than on client on a pc. So idk if multiboxing is preventable but you can do more.
Im glad to see the change, but a friend of mine has been affected by this because their algorythm is not perfect. He owns 2 accounts and play both actively, he doesnt use any software and use the alt+tab way to change between which is what blizz said was ok still. But right after this change he got banned for "botting or using third party software", and when he complained saying he wasnt he was shut down and they would drop his case and ignore any further inquieries about this. What probably got him tagget by the algorythm was having a priest on follow while farming meat in feralas on his warrior. and then later trading a large sum of gold (2k) from his priest to his warrior to buy consumables as his priest is his bank alt. theres no other explanation that the algorythm must have picked this up and thought he was botting. The ban is not the worst though, its the way customer service is handling this. he has been shut down and ignored on multiple occations, basicly being told "we cant give you the reason we banned you, but youre banned kktybye." Were still fighting this, asking for GDPR files etc because they cant deny him the reason by EU laws, but the fact that theyre this awfull about this is not putting a good image on blizzard.
Yea, I think the actual effect of this all is that botters will continue to ruin things while the legit boxers will become extinct.
Hey WillE, thanks for posting this! As someone currently running a 5-box setup in Classic, I was understandably frustrated at Blizz’s new rule. But I now realize that Blizzard just changed the meta of multiboxing. The new skilled multi boxers will be able to play 5 accounts of Windowed-mode WoW. Sure, it sucks not being able to use LevelBuddy, but a competent multi boxer will still wreck ass out in Azeroth.
Best news for TBC so far! Let's get more of these now Blizzard!
It will certainly have huge impact on the economy first. Everything will cost more but will also sell for more. First thing in SL is that all crafted gear is BoE and the amounts of farming needed for max level items is huge for a single person to deal with. We are getting back to farming where since now bots/multiboxers were making a good buck with sheer amount of stuff and over saturating the market. Yes things were costing less but if you are selling thousands of herbs/gems/ore a day you are to make money. Yes some people will still use the software but those will mostly be people that are doing it now, involved in rmt in most cases. For people like me it means i cannot longer play the game just by logging in for my raid nights and weekly m+. I will need to do the work. We earned enough money from boosting Nzoth mount and CE like every tier we do. I have gold but i don't think that everyone has the ability to do so. It will open the market for people actually investing time and selling. Amount of undercutting will be a lot less. It will probably normalize the market and make things valuable again.
True, most of us will have to go back to farm components if we want to be competitive. But i don't see this as a bad thing, as warming has always been an important part of WoW. Now at least we will be able to try and make a bit of money from it.
For people who don't have a boost group (for M+ or raids), there was close to no way of making gold easily, without staying at the AH for hours and buying/selling on end. Now we have a chance.
Saw 3 multiboxers last week already. Nothing has changed
Anchor weed is like black lotus? Oops, been mindlessly grinding them for pigments.
Eve online banned input broadcasting years ago. One of the best decisions they ever made. Shocked it took WoW this long.
One of the possible reasons they banned just the software instead of multiboxing - my girlfriend and I split my computer using ASTER, which lets use both use it at the same time. We play wow together like that, with two monitors, keyboards, mice, speakers and mics. But from an outside perspective, they'll see 2 characters being played from the same computer.
It's actually much easier to enforce based on character behavior - it's pretty trivial to write a script that checks the location of characters and their actions to see if there is some kind of input cloning going on. So even just having two instances of WoW open at the same time and playing both characters wouldn't really have a chance of triggering such a system.
I feel like they would probably overlook that, because they will be using an anti-cheat software that will just detect what you have. It will also look at if it is one battle net account or not (assuming you and your gf have different B-net accounts). I don't think you should have much of an issue with it, but they will warn you first, because you are not broadcasting one input to multiple accounts. It's one input to one account.
I had a 5 man multi box team and I was playing 7 days a week, 10+ hours a day.I was banned a few days before prepatch, they didn’t even give me a warning.I was taking up a crowded farm spot and I assume a got a massive amount of reports
They didn’t even give me a reason. I emailed them telling they’re making a mistake but they talked in vague therms and refused to tell me anything. I don’t like multi box farming but I assumed it was allowed so i saw it as a better alternative to paying for gold. It’s probably better for the game but I’m never playing retail wow again
The gap between the best players and the worst should be measured in skill, not sweat. I fully support this change.
oh yeah, there's going to be "intelligent solutions" to this. don't worry about that.
Playing the ol' Devil's advocate here: I reckon Blizzard could have resolved the whole thing and kept their previous policy intact by rolling back some of the looting mechanics.
Set Autoloot or Fetch/Lootarang to single target only and have nodes tappable or even Classic style and the whole problem disappears - at least as far as the farming and economy issues go.
The other major issue is PvP. A dozen moonkins hitting you with simultaneous DoTs/Starfall is not survivable by anything and so I can see a need for serious restrictions on the use of boxing there.
I still have flashbacks to the Timeless Isle legendary quests but that's been my only real negative experience with it.
While most boxers I've encountered have been quite sociable and helpful (especially with Hogger kills), they've all been small-scale, five toons at most. And levelling boxers have, as far as I've seen, never really been a problem. Farmers and PvPers are. I've suggested a solution to farming so I'd suggest boxing restrictions being implemented definitely in battlegrounds and possible in contested zones. It should be easy enough to match IP multi-client instances with zones.
Ideally, we should like to keep boxing as an option for those choosing to play with an 'alternative' gaming style for levelling, roleplaying and 'solo' dungeon challenges (some of these boxers have very entertaining and prolific UA-cam channels) or even setting up multiple toons for raid progression but with a heavy hand on those who would use it to suppress solo players by means of PvP griefing or forming economic monopolies.
At the moment I see, for the non-toxic boxers, the dungeon challenge and roleplaying groups will likely head to private servers. Raid progression guilds will gradually be restricted to the less gainfully employed. Classic levelling is going to be a lot more frustrating. In Retail levelling, multiple toons is easy enough. It's just mind-numbingly repetitive. And slow.
So yeah, I think this is going to be back to the grindfest.
Unless somebody knows where to get a USB multiplexer...

Thankfully this won't affect me at all. I run two accounts, on two computers, and run my team using two keyboards and two mice. The only thing that would screw that up would be if Blizz disabled 'auto follow'.
Oh no people won't be able to have 5 mage characters follow their main so they can delete people as they farm? Shame. Multiboxing is the digital equivalent of using an oversized hand when someone says you can take a *handfull* of snacks, unfair and rubbish.
Multiboxing will still exist tho
So, the stupidest thing in the game that needed to be changed when the game was good and fun to play, finally got changed when the game is not fun to play and stupid. Ok then.
also a note on moonkin farmers. i still feel the spots will be contested. just with less people or groups of friends. but enough where it prob still wont be profitable considering the travel time trying to find a unused spot or competing on tags. hell even just 1 guy can fuck u up if there essentially taking half the kills. so i dont expect much change there accept that 1 guy on a server wont have a shit ton of mats. itll just be spread about more people is all. i remember trying farms like that and all it takes is 1 guy doing a wq or 1 guy trying it out to see if its viable to fuck it up. or 1 guy trying to just be annoying enough to compete on tags with u. while ya moonkin farmers can be annoying in regards to actually getting a good open world raw gold farm, they are by far not the only bad situation that can fuck up ur raw gold farm and there removal i imagine will have small affects from a getting a good spot perspective. hell if a former multiboxer is forced to play 1 class they mite even just super gear the character with high end mythic equivalent gear to make up for the lack of 2 or more normal to heroic geared characters. possibly making it bout the same in terms of annoyance if if a guy is killing way quicker then u still and taking all the mobs.
That was a tough willie to find in where's willie side game. 4 resets for me!
Bots are still a major problem. It’s the bots they need to be enforcing bans on. Those players are not really playing the game. A bot is. Remove bots. Make using bots something you can be banned over.
Happy about that!
