Just started recently at OD, two weeks in, and I am starting to enjoy it. I used to do heavy haul, so at first it was overwhelming to me and stressful. Tommorow is my first day on my on so we gonna see how she goes. Thanks for the video Stephen
@stevenspears44 Hey man thanks for the reply! It is going great, getting better day by day! I enjoy the social aspect of the job and getting to know knew people. The hardest part really is just finding out where to unload freight when going to a new place you have never been. My backing is getting better, though, work in progress haha. Also, my terminal manager is giving me good feedback too so I can't be doing that bad! Hope all is well with you!
Honestly, I think it’s all about top-tier freight. The carrier that charges the most to move a pallet. Because it will arrive in one piece, and you will enjoy your job. That definitely can vary from state! get out & ask some drivers, in your area that work for the company you’re seeking
@@stevenspears44 well i just got into Estes P&D should be starting within 2 weeks ... leaving food service , i know ima take a pay cut im sure less hours at Estes
I am an experienced dockworker of 25 years and never got hired at OD or Saia or FedEx or Estes. I am 65 I guess they don't want old people on their job
Good video. I've been here at old dominion since 2006. Started off working the dock, went to their driving school that year and worked p&d up to 2021 now I'm in line haul. You'll need your tanker endorsement as well with the hazmat due to the totes old dominion hauls. Vacations after 5 years I believe is 3 weeks, I think 10yrs you get a month. Start times for p&d vary from state to state, terminal to terminal. Here in the dfw area most guys starting out will come in later, 10am-2pm and work depending on the volume of work available, sometimes till 10pm-12am. I've never worked anywhere else but I get guys that have worked at other freight carriers and they say old dominion is alot better.
Thanks man I really appreciate all those facts, yeah I’m just learning, December will be a year. I just know it’s one of the better companies, and I have pride in working for the best. Thanks for doing your part. Yeah I’ll be waiting a while in Miami for linehaul.
I toured a driving school here in DE today and they recommended Old Dominion local. I start in July, should be licensed by mid-August. Wondering if you still recommend it, and if I can go ahead and apply B4 I finish the CDL.
@ haven’t utilized my CDL A in which I got about 9years. Looking for a career shift. Will OD hire me with no real time on the road experience? I heard about OD new driver training and didn’t know if that would apply to me or would it be the same as a refresher training that would allow me to get on the road for them. Thanks for your answer in advance
I don’t so you need one year of verifiable tractor-trailer experience with in the last five years I believe. Definitely apply and see what they say, I would just call your nearest Old Dominion terminal.
I’m going in for an interview hopefully today. I’m going to try to sneak over with my truck. I’m have some ltl experience with a small company delivering seed. Thanks for the advice

I start at 545 AM, work 4 on 3 off and still gross $100k plus.
Well, hell yeah Bubba I’m glad you’re liking where you’re at man. It only took you nine years to get on with the railroad. I got an offer a few years back, but I turned it down. I just love to drive for right now. Freedom is really important to me in this chapter of my life.
On the high end, 52,000 a year. On the low in 40,000, it’s just a really sharp learning curve. Once you get through your first year you’re easily make 60 to 72,000 a year. You just can’t be scared of work. It’s a lifestyle.

One time I had to drive from Miami to Reddick, north of Ocala and back but I had to drop one of the trailers in the Ocala terminal, get an empty there and take it to west palm beach, drop the empty and get a loaded trailer which was heavier than the lead trailer so I had to break the set and re do it to put the heavy one as lead and then go to Miami, it took like 13:30 to do all that

You’ll make more in Texas, that’s the south east pay rate. I took a $.30 decrease, when I moved to Florida from Texas. Overtime after 50 hours. Depending on the terminal, will dictate if you get over 50.
