As an American I love the names/locations of RAF Air fields and the history behind them before and though WW2. What a timeless airframe, the fact that we still use it in some form puts it in rare air(no pun intended). "As ballast, 32 bit, sitting forward in blackhole, clang..." good stuff. Great content/interview as always 👍

Great interview and a fantastic airframe. I used to look at Canberras and think ugly duckling but I knew their vital role which was effectively the UK U2 v1.0

    Brilliant - Completely absorbing.
I knew it was good ......... but......
Had *no idea* the Canberra was SO versatile.
    Thanks Ken

One of the most interesting interviews on the channel. Hopefully followed up with a description of Ken's time on the Tornado and at Finningley.

For me personally this was the best one yet. Fascinating stuff. I always wondered how these guys existed in the 'blackhole' in such a cramped space. I've sat in the nose at my local air museum and I don't envy them. I was interested to know how they assisted the Police with major enquiries. One wonders whether the PR9 would've had a roll to play today? My guess is it would've. Thanks again Mike.

Great interview, who'd have thought that sitting in a black hole could make for such an absorbing career! Thanks for this, seems a great bloke. Looking forward to part two.

Imagine worrying about it being old when the B52 is still flying, and there are still no plans to retire it.

Yes seems to be a rather curious British obsession with wanting to get rid of something 'old' even if it's still incredibly useful...

We had Canberra nuclear bombers on the air base I was brought up on as a child. Beautiful aircraft. One of the Canberra pilots was awarded an Air Force Cross when his aircraft had a mechanical fault and he managed to keep it airborne long enough for both him and his navigator to get out before it crashed. The pilot subsequently won another AFC but I don’t know what aircraft it was.

Interesting to look at capabilities such as this and compare to what we have now. In many aspects, we seem less capable!

I was at RAF West Raynham 1972/73 working in the Commcen in ATC. At the time Canberra’s of 85 & 100 Sqn were there. One day I still remember was going into local approach to be told that one of our Canberras had just crashed shortly after take off, sadly both crew were killed.

I'd shoot for navigator too. Pilot is just a taxi driver that likes to drive in a showy manner, navigator does all the interesting stuff.

PR9 has an uncanny similarity with the Martin B57 set up!

    • @andrewwood9782
      @andrewwood9782 Рік тому +1

That’s because the B57 IS a Canberra built under licence by Martin

Just thought I'd add further context to the story of the photo of Big Ben taken over the Isle of Wight. Big Ben's dials are 22.5ft (6.9m). The nearest part of the Isle of Wight from Big Ben is just under 70 miles so let us just call it 70 miles (approx 113km) for the sake of it. Now imagine seeing a photo of the dial of Big Ben where it is clear enough to read the time only the photo was taken from 70 miles away and the aircraft was flying at 50,000ft (15,240m).
I served very briefly as a supplier on 39sqn and I have a similar story only this time it was Canary Wharf (the building itself is actually One Canada Square), again the PR9 was flying over the Isle of Wight. Canary Wharf is also in London but a bit further away than Big Ben (about 72 miles).

Very interesting my only experience of the Canberra was watching them being chopped up at St Athans .
    They looked b/strong!
Plenty of Hunters destined for Africa were also there 1972
