I was born in Roswell NM and currently reside 40 miles south of it. All of us locals who were watching this show at the time were very pleased with the episode.
5:28 "This guy looks pretty random so he might die" Munez? no way! This guy seems awesome I bet he's going to live forever!
The actor who played with Quark & the trade story -- the tall guy -- is academy award winner James Cromwell. You might know him already as the tall farmer from the Babe movies. Next time you see him he'll be playing the guy who invents the warp drive, and he's been a Trek icon ever since, both among fans and inside the Federation!
Cromwell was a mainstay guest star throughout the run of TNG. he was a Trek veteran by the time First Contact came out.
Yup Zephram Cochrane himself.
Does that mean Ollie has plans for _First Contact?_ I got a little protective of his innocence when he said Earth has only ever used 2 nukes for war...
@@jerodast no Ollie has seen First Contact....he reacted to it some time ago...no pun intended lol
LA Confidential
"He's a car salesman, Quark, and not a very good one."
One of the better burns in this show.
Deep Space Nine does and AMAZING job of building the Ferengi race's background, customs, etc. They did a much better job of telling their story than TNG could ever accomplish.
I've noticed that myself. You'll get no argument from me.
James Cromwell, who played the Hanok, previously played Minister Nayrok in TNGs "The Hunted", Jaglom Shrek in "Birthright parts 1&2" (the Yridian information dealer) and later played Zefram Cochrane in Star Trek First Contact.
A lot of people are very hard on ds9, but I think it was an amazing show. Not only for the issues it took head on. It managed to bring spirituallity into the story very intelligently
Really? it never got the ratings tng did at the time but most people i speak to now say it's easily the best show
People are hard on DS9? I run across the OCCASIONAL critic or dislike but most people I run across LOVE the show. IMO it's the best Trek series in the whole franchise. And that's not a minority opinion. A few would say TNG but I'm in the DS9 camp. Still love TNG of course as well as TOS and VOY and occasionally ENT.
Fun Little Green Men trivia : The Pleasure Goddess of "Rixx" was the
writer's inside joke referring to executive producer Rick Berman lol
There's also the Betazoid artefact the Sacred Chalice of Rixx
Star Trek writers love their submarine episodes.
"Starship Down" = "Balance of Terror" + "Disaster" + that one scene in _TNG_ where Worf learns how to be a good executive officer :)
@@jerodast Don't forget Wrath of Khan.
The General is played by Charles Napier who appeared in the original series as a space hippy. Seriously.
Little Green Men is more typical of the roles he played. He was often cast as a military man or police officer.
He has such a good authoritative voice and look. It was so weird seeing him play a hippie.
He even played a general in the first Austin Powers movie
Charles Napier went from space hippie to a Herbert in charge!
for me he will always be duke phillips
That general was the space hippie Adam in the classic Star Trek episode "The Way to Eden"
Yes indeed, it was Charles Napier, who unfortunately died some years ago. He was always so good at doing grouchy authority roles.
LGM is one of the great episodes.
Yes, it is, but Starship Down is an underrated great episode.
LGM is very clever. It's great to use Quark/Rom/Nog like this, basically fish out of water alien story. I like when they finally treated the characters relatively seriously but put them in a situation that's funny.
It's well written too. It totally makes sense Nog would become totally infatuated with Earth and it's hilarious he found that picture of Bell which is of course The Sisko.
It is one of the best scripts.
@@silikon2 See I'm just surprised he learned about the Bell Riots before he read up on what some of the major cities with really significant history were on Earth haha. Or maybe Cleveland is a really big deal in the 24th century, I guess I dunno :)
@@jerodast Heh, I think it's really just meant as a gag. But it's possible Nog was looking for more info on The Sisko and searched the PADD using a pic of him and he popped up.
When Kira puts on the baseball cap her smile was adorable
This is essentially a submarine battle. So epic and thrilling.
Inspired by movies like Gray Lady Down, Run Silent Run Deep, Das Boot. One of my favorite episodes.
The guy under the Karemma-makeup played Zefram Cochrane in Star Trek First Contact ;)
The best part of Little Green Men being a time travel episode is bringing up the Bell Riots just before it happens.
By the way, that's real archive footage of a real bomb test they're flying into at the end there!
Believe me, it's not the last time Star Trek messes up our past timeline...
Oh and about ships caught in a disaster, you might want to watch TNG Season 5 episode Disaster... there are a few fun scenes with Picard in it...
Disaster is where Worf delivers the O'Brien's baby Molly!
Ollie HAS to watch it- it's practically a DS9 episode!
I remember when I originally saw this in the 90s, I was _so_ sure it wasRene Auberjonois playing the “commerce minister” (he was not, it was James Cromwell) … and still, every time I hear this, this “mistaken identity” still keeps popping into my mind.
They have a similarly gruff voice. Always gets me doubting too.
I remember a season 4 Stargate SG-1 episode where the guy they encounter seemed to be James Cromwell but was in fact played by René Auberjonois.
@@quoniam426 The one with the racist fascists?
Same
The guy in charge at the base, Charles Napier, played Adam on _TOS_ in "The Way to Eden," was also one of the cops killed by Hannibal Lecter in _The Silence of the Lambs,_ and had a funny fight with Clint Eastwood in _Heartbreak Ridge._
He was also a "Good Ol' Boy" in The Blues Brothers.
@@themotleycollector And while also remembered as a bad guy in _Rambo,_ his favorite role was as the judge in _Philadelphia._
"A few years from now, mankind could have rocket ships of our own. We could travel the galaxy, exploring new worlds and new civilizations."
boldly go where no-one has gone before
I love both of these. Starship Down is one of my favourites of the season.
The actor playing against Quark in starship down is a Trek regular in various roles. He also is the second to play the inventor of Warp drive (Cochrane)
I love the shot of the Defiant as it comes out the clouds, firing. The music is also pretty good. "dun dun dun dun dun dun" etc :)
Thanks, Oliver! 🖖 James L. Conway directed "Little Green Men" and Alexander Singer directed "Starship Down".
I think every show in the 90s did a Rosewell related thing
The pinnacle of this trend being the 1999 TV show, _Roswell_ :P
Little Green men actually takes place in Dayton OH at Write Patterson Air Force Base. After the Roswell incident whatever was recovered was taken to and stored at Wright Patterson in Hangar 18. You can tell on the Hangar that Quarks ship Flys out of says 18 on the side
"Starship Down" is one of my favourites, homage to edgy submarine movie, Das Boot and such, and I loved the reference to "Past Tense" in "LGM"
Looking forward to seeing next week's episodes. Two of my all time favorites.
Two outstanding episodes!! Season 4 really is almost nothing but bangers!!!
Also, I'm sure you've gotten a million comments already that have pointed this out, but the Karemma merchant was played by James Cromwell, AKA Zefram Cochrane from Star Trek First Contact!
O'Brien is a much better chief engineer than Geordi. Geordi tries to do everything himself, doesn't really help his staff advance their skills or their careers. He beams over to Pakled ships by himself because his ego can't handle letting a team of underlings go in his stead and then supervise their work like a manager should. O'Brien is here delegating tasks to his staff, encouraging them, reassuring them, managing his people well. For O'Brien, it's a team effort, and it doesn't matter who gets credit, he just wants to get the job done and done right.
O'Brian is good, but no way is he better than Geordi. By that notion Doctor Crusher should send a nurse on away missions than go herself, or Worf sending someone else from security instead of beaming down himself. The responsibilities of being on a starship is different from that of a space station. Geordi is technically still part of the bridge crew and beams down with the away team, which is usually a combination of Riker, Worf, and Data.
Also, Geordi's visor can see things no other engineer can see. So it makes sense he should be the one who goes onto the Pakled ship, for instance. It's not an "ego" thing. That's never been a part of his character.
I completely disagree with your generalization of Gerodi's character. I have seen many episodes in which Geordi has delegated tasks to his staff and other shows where he takes on a crucial task himself. Geordi had a rough start but eventually and successfully helped Reginald Barclay become a member of his staff, he has on occasion mentored Wesley Crusher while was preparing to join the academy. Geordi also welcomed Ensign Sonya Gomez during the Q Who episode also while he was repairing the shields from the borg attack guess who helping him? It was Sonya. No matter if its Scotty, Geordi, O'Brien, B' Elanna, or Tucker Starship engineers have to be able to walk a fine line in managing and delegating as well as performing crucial tasks themselves that showcase why they were promoted to Chief engineer in the first place.
I've seen plenty of episodes where O'Brien does something personally and doesn't delegate. Applying your real-world viewpoint to a sci-fi character may not work here. I can't speak for anybody else, but I want to see main characters like Geordi, O'Brien etc... personally involved in life-or-death situations as opposed to them delegating various assignments to subordinates.
None of the away missions or delegation we see on _Star Trek_ usually makes any sense haha. I'm not gonna hold it against Geordi. But I do love O'Brien as a character slightly more. Geordi didn't often get great writing.
@@kenjisparks Ur right Geordi was never portrayed as having an ego problem in all of 7 seasons.
Geordi fans super triggered, LOL.
Yeah, Geordi got better near the end of TNG, and having some other recurring engineering characters helped a lot with that. One of them was O'Brien, of course, so O'Brien already had a bunch of character development by the time DS9 started. In their respective roles as chief engineers, O'Brien is unquestionably better, though, simply because he started out great from the start, and Geordi definitely didn't.
Geordi certainly had an ego. Mostly it was for television production reasons rather than anything to do with the character, but the reality is we must judge him on what is portrayed on screen, regardless of the backstage reasons. The Pakled incident was particularly egregious, and was fresh on my mind when Ollie talked about O'Brien taking care of his staff. That episode of TNG even included Gomez, so it's not like they couldn't have used her in that episode to show that Geordi was a good leader.
It's just ridiculous that there's a starship with a thousand people on it, the crew are worried about being held up by a distress call in case the Captain needs them while traveling by shuttlecraft, and they decide it's better to send a single lone officer to deal with something instead of beaming over an entire engineering team and security escort to make sure everything goes as quickly and as smoothly as possible and get back to what they were supposed to be doing.
DS9 had more consistently better writing than TNG, anyway. They had lots of minor characters, particularly underlings, actually participate in active ways in many episodes. Since DS9 was better written most of the time, the characters are better most of the time. That includes O'Brien over Geordi.
So that's why it was covered up, it wasn't a weather balloon, it wasn't a crashed disc, it was the Ferengi!
Mooooogie!
What a wonderful singing voice singing the DS9 intro 😂😂
I love this review channel but I have to admit I skip that part every time now.
Worf is the captain now!
The Ferengi legends of root beer continue to grow woooo!
Is "Little Green Men" funnier for the inherent humor, or for the fact that Odo can mimic an Austrian Shepherd perfectly, yet cant make eyebrows right? :P
Something you might miss -- because it's so entertaining otherwise anyway -- is that this is basically a style and subject matter parody of early American sci-fi films. That woman, she's so cheerful!
I like the green light.
You can’t help but feel sorry for the Defiant. She keeps getting the crap kicked out of her nearly every episode she’s in. Chief O’Brien must have so much work to do.😂
CONTINUITY & PRODUCTION PROBLEMS
STARSHIP DOWN (IMDb Rating: 7.8)
"The Nitpicker's Guide For DS-9 Trekkers" got these two episodes reversed. They list "Little Green Men" as episode 6.
16:03 When Quark uses the tricorder to scan the torpedo, he's got it aimed at himself.
17:02 When Quark pulls out the "diode", the torpedo goes dark. When damage control arrives, it's lit up again.
LITTLE GREEN MEN (IMDb Rating: 8.6)
27:56 When Dax buys the holosuite program from Nog, she short-changes him. Instead of the agreed-upon 10 slip of latinium, she only gives him 3 or 4.
33:16 When Rom discovers he can't take the ship out of warp, there is something odd about Quark's inner right ear.
40:12 Odo's left hand suddenly disappears from Quark's shoulder.
41:46 The markings on the needle disappear. If she rotated it while it was in Quark's arm, it's no wonder he screamed. (not in this edit)
There are several errors in the military uniforms and insignia.
🤣"And if we pick the wrong one, we die!" 🤣
Megan Gallagher who plays the nurse is a so in Voyager and Enterprise a few times 😮
She also played Lance Henriksen's wife on Millennium.
And she was in the same season of "24" as Alexander Siddig
And apparently she was in DS9 season 2! "Invasive Procedures". She looks way better in her uniform here though :)
@@jerodast Forgot about that
Favorite actress who should've had a bigger career.
This episode is the first appearance of Enrique Muniz. Though at the time the character didn’t have a name. This would be fleshed out later. Muniz and the other engineers on the Defiant are a pretty tight group. And yes this is another fine example of how to do NCO’s right. See Muñiz is the only officer among the three Engineers we see in this episode. Though they wear the uniform, they are not Starfleet Academy graduates. They went to a trade school like Luna or Mars.
O'Brien did call him Muniz in the episode.
@@themotleycollector I thought that was the case. I didn’t rewatch the episode. I looked up the character in Memory Alpha.
You're into for some great episodes in the future!! Love DS9!
Thumbs-up for this video.....as if I had to tell ya!😃
I think Starship Down was the episode where Kira became my favorite character.
I love little green men.
The piano playing democrat line might also refer to a joke Truman told. He said he could have been either a politician or a piano player in a (cat) house. Hangar 18 is part of the Roswell conspiracy as well so that’s a nice Easter egg. Although in the conspiracy theory it’s located at Wright-Patterson AFB. Supposedly where the dead alien bodies were sent. It’s also the name of bad early 80s Sci fi film that ironically was popular in the Soviet Union. Being one of the few western films to be screened there. Since the plot made the US look bad with a cover up conspiracy.
Love me some time travel episodes!!
Can’t recall if you have watched it yet…but definitely watch the trouble with tribbles from the original 60’s show. There is a tie in to a ds9 episode at some point.
I love starship down and little green me can’t wait until in the place moonlight about the morality of war
Little Green Men is often on lists of the top DS9 episodes ever. To me, it's only okay, though. I mean, it's a nice sci-fi story, but I feel like 90% of it didn't have to be DS9 and didn't even have to be Star Trek at all. It was about aliens from the future stuck in the 40s, and that could have been any IP.
I do like Starship Down a lot, though.
"Starship down" is a better version of TNG's "Disaster"
Maybe you didn't mean that to be disparaging but I will defend "Disaster" to death haha. "Starship Down" is an excellent episode but I do find "Disaster" a bit more memorable in the long run. "SD" has more genuine character moments though. (But it's not a Defining Moment for any character, so again, not quite as memorable.)
@@jerodast My favorite thing about DS9 is that it does so much character dev't without always having "defining moments". Sisko and Kira get friendlier. Worf gets better at command. Bashir and Jadzia cement their non-romantic friendship. You don't always need a big speech or a grand gesture to show who these people are.
Better? I wouldn't go that far but it's a decent episode. Disaster was fantastic as a disaster flick. Go revisit the 70s disaster flicks when the genre first became popularized. Disaster follows the Greats at how they portrayed a disaster type experience or episode.
The General calling Truman a "piano playing Democrat" is the only time in all of Star Trek a democraticly elected official is referred to by their political association or party. The general probably is a Republican but not nessasarraly there were and still are other factions within both US political parties and they don't like each other.
The 1950s. This was common during The Cold War Era.
While it is fine to enjoy music, in you case I advise voice lessons first or passing on the singing. My dad is a bit tone death while the rest my family have done some singing and to a trained ear you are painful. Might help with increasing your numbers.
It's a little thing, but it always bugs me that Captain whosiewatsis is wearing his bars SIDEWAYS. Really, did NO ONE notice?
Echolocation?
Thermal layers?
Hull collapse from pressure?
Another "space is an ocean" battle
There is only one time in the whole of Ds9 that we ever hear Morn make a single noise. He goes "uh" as he's about to start talking to Quark, who interrupts him.
That's a spoiler. 😡
@@MrDeathpilot I mean, is it? really?
tbc: Ollie has "got" the Morn joke - and did by episode 2 or 3. We all did. It's not subtle. Is it a "spoiler" to say "Morn never talks" ?
More fun for Ollie, is "catch the episode where he goes "uh" / "ah" before he's interrupted.
@@sarcasticstartrek7719 If Ollie already knew, then why did you think you needed to tell him? 🤨
You revealed information about future episodes.
Your comment is a SPOILER.
PERIOD.
@@sarcasticstartrek7719 "...more fun for Ollie" 😡
Your "excuse" is absurd.
This isn't the first time I've called you out for revealing spoilers.
You need to be removed.
@@MrDeathpilot Are you ok?
I wonder if "piano-playing Democrat" could be classed as using contemptuous words to describe the President?
A little advice - pee before LGM or you might wish you'd worn a diaper
Starship Down did very little for me. It feels perfunctory and very similar to a certain TNG ep (which was itself trite).
Worf: I would like to say Worf is out of character here. He's perfectly used to working in engineering and all sorts of other environments. I don't think I *can* say he's out of character because I do not believe it's really the same character. This Worf is always grumpy and whiny and whinging.
The Quark/Hanok stuff wasn't bad and it's a hoot to see James Cromwell in yet another role but it certainly wasn't inspired. It felt largely cliche too except the economic argument.
I agree SD wasn't a bad episode but definitely not among top quality Trek or even among the best of this show or season even.
TNG Disaster on the other hand is DEFINITELY Top Tier Trek. It handled the Disaster scenario EXCELLENTLY on almost a cinematic level. I remember the Disaster films trend of the 70s and TNG was SPOT ON with their episode. DS9 Ship Down episode wasn't bad but DEFINITELY not Top Tier Trek. It was cool and watchable though.
you have 10 minutes, plenty of time to tell a story
The predictable and goofy characterizations of the military officers in LGM almost sink this episode. One of the weaker episodes of S4. Works best as a comedy and a cold-war parody.
The comedy and Goofiness doesn't make the episode weak though. If an episode has a comedic leaning that doesn't make it automatically weak. I LOVE the LGM episode. If comedy is well done I can't dismiss it because they chose to go the comedic route. Comedy doesn't automatically make an episode a bad episode just because it contains comedy or takes a comedic approach.
